PR is def not as high as some of his other work for me like as with other fans, but it def holds that special place in my heart.

The Beautiful Ones, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain are all timeless classics for me and some of Prince's very best songs

I Would Die 4 U and Let's Go Crazy are almost as classic but don't quite have as much appeal as those other three, nonetheless great jamz

Take Me With U and Baby I'm a Star, good pop songs, nothing more nothing less

Computer Blue is saved by the bridge and guitar solo towards the middle, other than that, it sounds like generic 80s pop to me. Which is ironic b/c this is a huge fan fave from the album.

Darling Nikki has a fascinating theme and attitude portrayed in the song, but the music never really gets going much, I mean the synths toward the end get intense, but overall the song is slightly boring, and is my least favorite. I do enjoy the coda at the end though. Not that I dislike this song, just some aspects of it are, well, eh.. Things pick back up though with When Doves Cry biggrin

Computer Blue was/is abviously a fan fave for Prince as well. If found it interesting that at the 1983 Benefit show it was the only song he introduced. And probably 1 of the only ones that we have so many different studio takes on. I think another reason its a fan fav is that once we heard the 7 -14 min vers we got it

wow I always thought Darling Nikki was very layered. I love listening to the unedited version but I turn Computer Blue & Darling Nikki up in the car or listen to some really good headphones and generic or boring are far from what Im hearing

But again PR was a movie soundtrack unlike Parade the songs mostly were 2 be used in the club scene performances, Prince wanted Computer Blue to be much longer in the movie but had to cut it to work with the script scene

Imagine my disappointment when I looked up the PR track listing as a kid and discovering none of the songs played in the film ("Jungle Love", "The Bird", "Sex Shooter" and "Modernaire") were in the soundtrack... it kinda made Purple Rain stand out more of its own than be a movie soundtrack but it would've been great if they were included. nod

The Time and Apollonia 6 definetly would have been much bigger if he did that.

That was a different era then. If he had included them, it would have to be a double album and the price would have gone up unless he had it at a cheaper price for a double album like he did with "1999" which was around $10 if I remember correctly. Single albums were usually around $8 and full fledged double albums like "Saturday Night Fever" and Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" were like $12 or $13.

Plus, Prince had mainly given his funk to The Time and Apollonia 6 that year. A lot of those pop fans wouldn't have bought that considering that it would cost more being a double album. "Footloose" was a soundtrack that was out that same year that featured both rock and R&B but it was a single album and those R&B tracks were simply OK but what Prince gave to The Time and Apollonia 6 was outright funk and the majority of pop fans hated funk. The rare times that funk made it onto pop radio was when it was watered down and weaker. Pop loved stuff like "Let's Hear It For The Boy" but would have hated stuff like "Sex Shooter" because it was too hard for pop.

Andy is a four letter word.

Let's Go Crazy - silly riff, silly lyrics, the ending is loud and tasteless, that scream is soooo low-class bored2

Take Me With U - ugh, cheesy and sticky, sounds like something you can hear in a Disney teen sitcom

The Beautiful Ones - clearly the best song of the entire album (those screams at the end nearly ruin the song, though), but a single flower doesn't make a bunch, does it???

Computer Blue - what's with the title, blue? why blue? too many changes, the song drove me mad, fuck it

Darling Nikki - confused mysoginistic crap, I don't even wanna talk about it, not even Tommy Lee would write something like this (well, perhaps he would)

When Doves Cry - yeah sure, doves crying? since when do birds cry?? stupid title song, repetitive, and it sounds cheap! without a bassline, the song doesn't roll, overrated song

I Would Die 4 U - then die already, the song is short, but it seems to go on forever, repetitive as hell!!!, and I don't understand the lyrics confuse

Baby I'm A Star - ok, you're great I get it next please bored2

Purple Rain - good, but bad lyrics and OVERLONG!!!!!

I dont think it would have been an album including all the protege songs ... only the ones in the film

SHIT! I take $12 for a double album set over a $30 for a TWO-CD set! ohgoon

Great start for a deep and meaningful discussion.
I would like to add my 2c if you please.....

Let's Go Crazy.....along with being loud and without taste what was he thinking with that holier than thou preacher opening and that rediculous outro....obviously a session guitarist....or was it Edie Van Halen? Prince had to have him after Beat It.

Take me with U.....a throw away clearly based on RNR Affair.

The Beautiful Ones.....I don't get it. Who are the ugly ones?

Computer Blue....maybe he just needed a better IT guy

Darling Nikki....what's this obsession with Prince and sex in the dark? Blue light and also no candlelight as the crackle of the flame will spoil his flow.

When Doves Cry.....mega fail here. I mean, where's the bass?????

I Would Die 4 U.... Ur not the only one that confused.....he doesn't seem to know if he's Martha or Arthur here.

Baby I'm a Star.....very bad grammar in this one. "yes I are"

Purple Rain....the only time I have seen rain that's purple was during the half time Super Bowl. Dont know but Something tells me that wasn't real. And surely this is an outtake for The Ladder.
