Plastic 80's production with too much reverb. Too immature lyrics and songs that could have benefit from more structure. "I Would Die 4 U" is a lame techno track that wishes it was detroit techno, but isn't. "100mph" should haven been on the album instead.

Wow, this is exactly what Vitriol would write had we never heard the album and Prince released it today. RIP

After reading thru everything and possibly understand what you are trying to get at
I still will say it's a great album, especially for a soundtrack (which is the 1st purpose of the album)
If Prince released this album as just an album then Erotic City a longer version of Computer Blue and a few other songs might have been on this album in replacement of others
but as a 'movie soundtrack album' it's fucking gReaaaatttt
As a few others have stated its the energy and passion behind each song, Prince has always had simple and complicated lyrics, but the stories were also very interesting, made U question if he really did meet a girl in a hotel masturbating, did he really have sex with his sister, was it Jill he met going Uptown, was there someone that offered to give him head on her way to the wedding, etc
Prince has always done good with the simple ballads/and folkish rock type songs heard on For U Prince Dirty Mind and he's made them through his career: Tangerine could easily have been from 1976-1980
If Compassion (from 20Ten) was written during 1982-1984 its the energy and wildness that would have made the difference. A lof of Prince's music lately feels like he's holding back When I hear the synth parts on Tricky its just wicked like he was half naked dripping with mascara wearing lace bandanas and leather while playing it, I still will say I enjoyed 20Ten but if feels moderated feels like he was in that room full of kids blowing bubbles during Diamonds & Pearls video being discrete and careful
The 'weakest' song on Purple Rain isn't so weak, Take Me With U worked for the scene it was written 4, I believe all the songs presented did. Including Sex Shooter. Take Me With U probably could have been replaced with Noon Rendezvous, Traffic Jam... , Love U(A Million Miles) etc But for the scenery I think it was the right song, and still has the Purple punch behind it, the music is inovative and creative
The lyrics and titles to the songs are perfect because they aren't general lingo and language from anywhere, it's language from someone who envisions Uptown: Our clothes, our hair, We don't care, It's all about being there
It's lyrics written with people thru people by himself about someone else who were about of that Erotic City Uptown which is why it's so interesting, there is mystery behind it still, depth even when it may seem shallow, I always felt like I was peeping into a bedroom, down a hallway alley or a private park/garden, a home or neighborhood studio, or dressing room down the hall in 1st Avenue, that's some of the things this music from this album brings up in me
Great album

In a way I agree. Prince was trying to appeal to the masses and that's what he did. The album contains my second least favorite Prince song, Take Me With U. I hate that song so much, I can't even tell you guys. I hate Purple Rain, too.
The only songs I listen to on there are Computer Blue, Baby I'm A Star and The Beautiful Ones. I love ATWIAD so much more than this album.

Sounds good to me. Needs more funk and less rock and attempts at gaining a crossover audience but I knew that was coming when I first heard "Little Red Corvette" on pop/rock radio (and was not pleased to hear it there). But at least it was good hard futuristic sounding rock and not soccer mom adult contemporary attempts at crossover.
Overall, I thought it was a great album except for "Take Me With U" which was simply decent. He could have left that off though and included "Erotic City" instead because it definitely needed more funk on the actual album. . . . [Edited 9/18/12 6:51am] Andy is a four letter word.

Wendy described his song writing abilities at the time best on the Purple Rain 25th anniversary DVD set. It is a great album. Without it, Prince would never have had the career that he did. TRUE BLUE

That careless transition to another key in the middle of "Computer Blue" proves that Prince doesn't understand the concept of musical keys.

Purple Rain will stand as the most original and also the greatest Prince album forever...
(Together with the Sign O The Times album). Prince 4Ever.

Indeed! I get the point joe is making here. But I also agree on the "energy &wildneess" that was great at that time. And I love Take me with U...really! Putting Erotic city on this album would have been a great bonus though!!!! Love4oneanother

I would say the album is definately overrated. There are very strong songs on there, some kind of weak and some decent.

again, you can't judge this album as a regular album, it's a soundtrack, made for a film of live performances and such. It is seriously not overrated. the songs 100% nail it for each scene

I remember reading that Prince wanted a full PR soundtrack album with the Time Dez Apollonia 6 etc (like he did with Graffiti Bridge)
I wonder if he did it that way would songs like Possessed & God(the Love Theme) be included

Can we vote this in as the most absurd topic, thread, and comment of all time?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Imagine my disappointment when I looked up the PR track listing as a kid and discovering none of the songs played in the film ("Jungle Love", "The Bird", "Sex Shooter" and "Modernaire") were in the soundtrack... it kinda made Purple Rain stand out more of its own than be a movie soundtrack but it would've been great if they were included.

The Time and Apollonia 6 definetly would have been much bigger if he did that.

I was joking, of course I know who Dez is but anybody who isn't on this site doesn't

I too used to wish that all the songs were on a two record set ala Saturday Night Fever. But that was the smartest thing to do for WB and Prince making it a single bands disc and the offshoots of the other ones sold seperately.
That whole project was barriwer breaking industry wise. "Climb in my fur."

Is this thread a joke? I can't be bothered to read it. But has anyone pointed out that on your thread rating the 20ten album, you give 20ten four out of five stars and then compared that to how you don't think Purple Rain is great?
No offense, I like you because you're cute, but has somebody already pointed out how seriously messed up your tastes are?

The Purple colored is a possible according to the original script I fit a few songs in according to the mood or scene at the moment somehow I think Manic Monday or 17 Days could fit in there
1.) Let's Go Crazy 2.) Jungle Love 3.) Wednesday 4.) Take Me With U 5.) Modernaire 6.) Possessed 7.) Chili Sauce 8.) the Beautiful Ones 8.) G-Spot 8.) Electric Intercourse 9.) God [the Love Theme] 10.) Traffic Jam 11.) If the Kid Can't Make U Come (Barn scene) 12.) When Doves Cry 13.) Traffic Jam 14.) Computer Blue 15.) Darling Nikki 16.) Sex Shooter 17.) Jungle Love 18.)
