New topic Printableplayed it to death now and I really can't see what the fuss is about. Yes the lyric is a big improvement, the vocal is great & there is a very catchy hook BUT it's dressed in a tonne of cheese with those bloody synth horns.
It's just Prince lite yet again - super weak synths, muted guitar, it actually sounds like an Elvis 60's movie song!.
This man needs a bloody good producer ASAP or someone in the camp to say Prince this is just not worthy of your talent.
Moving on.....in eternal hope!

Which member said Prince was "over" or "has lost it," or something? Who was that? 'Cause this nursing home track, combined with that stupid outfit on The View, and Affectation Allo altogether substantiates your claim 100%. oh well, the music is nice, I like the keyboard...but it's really filler material. His voice doesn't sound great.
He just doesn't do it for me anymore with his releases these last couple of years, but that's ok, he released so much good music in the past, I really don't care.

free0001 said: Yeah, well. Not feeling it. At all.
People, we have a code-red situation: we are literally running out of time!
Each time Prince takes on a new female 'protege', we are burdened with another year of anxious waiting...only to be delivered uninspired, bland tracks like this.
Prince, if you no longer want to impress us with the otherworldly sounds that we all know that you alone can conjure, teach somebody else! You are literally squandering your immense talent, all in the sake of impressing (Andy Allo/Bria/etc/etc/etc) WTF man, get it together!
Release Andy's album...we will buy it, we like her. Then promptly cancel the Chicago tour dates, shave your head, pack your bags, and head to Africa. Spend time by yourself. Read the Gita. Study J. Krishnamurti, the Buddha. Take your bible if you'd like, but you've already been there/done that. Read materials that challenge your core beliefs...I challenge you! Read Sam Harris or David Bohm. Read up on the Higgs Boson. Discover Neil Degrasse Tyson! Find yourself. Because right now, you're in a repeated cycle of being paralyzed by the cult of youth.
If you don't get it together soon, I'm gonna have to fire you and cook my own meals, create my own masterful paintings....or simply eat at another restaurant... Speak for yourself! Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee!

I'm trying really hard to like this but it sounds too 'supermarket music', find it all very safe sounding. His voice sounds nice and clear thought but don't like them lyrics. The whole thing is not edgy enough for me.
Maybe its one of them growers or something, hopefully.

I listened to it several times now ... I don't like the 'country' feeling. Not sure.

I dig it y'all. Music is pleasant...what I appreciate the most is the raspy, mature sound of his voice. at the end, by the way, he does repeat Rock n Roll, Love Affair for those commenting on lack of chorus...it does come at the end of the tune.
Beautiful strange, Prince!
Thx

Maybe because I've been starved on new Prince stuff for so long, maybe because I'm innately biased, maybe because - deep down - I want to like everything he does, but I love it. I love the nods to the Purple Rain era, 1999, and when I first heard it it took me back to 80s and made me remember those innocent days - pre-MP3, pre-Spotify, pre-iTunes - when you actually got excited about new releases and life was a schoolkid's happy blur of summer holidays and stolen kisses.
I really hope there's a new album. I know there's a lot of cynicism on these forums about Prince not being innovative etc but I'm happy to enjoy this for what it is - a cool, summery song with great lyrics and a great vibe.
Roll on the new album. | |

1 more thing, there's just too much good music out there for us to get too hung up this track.
It's free, it's harmless and as LF proved [IMHO] he can turn it on when he wants to- cream always rises to the top!.
Yellow trousers, an old womans Jacket and a weak song - not a great day in purple history!!...still love him though.

Totally uninspired! I will never spend my money on this sh...! Cover of T Rex - Get It On ($ kindergarten)! Prince is dead!

sounds like an outtake of Planet Earth (no, that's not a compliment), it has the same vibe of songs like Guitar or The 1 U Wanna C
not awful, but certainly not exciting at all; it sounds like a retreat from the underrated excellence of Lotus or 20t3n
the 80s synths are intriguing, but they're buried by the bland/organic pop/rock production
I guess this could be an ok poppy album track, but if this the best he has the offer, then the new album will be crass and bland...

yes,it's better than most of the crap on the radio these days, but let's not get carried away It's no masterpiece. It's a light, mediocre track.

After a second listening, this time at home stead of at work, the song sounds better. It grows. But still it is lacking something that maybe I am too spoiled with. That 'thing' that makes a song rock.
Maybe live, at higher volume, with a more raw sound, it could work great... Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Exactly! The mere presense of a country feel in it gives it a bland and depressing sound. The blending of country with rock is the reason I took current pop/rock stations off my dial. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought country of all things would ever be considered "cool" again in the pop/rock world but it has been since the 1990s and I sure as hell never dreamed that someone like Prince of all people would be combining it with his music. The synth line on "Take Me With U" is F#minor - G - A - G.
I don't have my guitar with me right now, but the synth line in "RandR Love Affair" is not the same chords, nor is it the same chord PROGRESSION. Although, the last two chords of the progression are probably the same intervals as the last two in "Take Me With U".
The reason y'all are comparing the two synth lines is because they both start on the second beat of the bar.
But that's really the ONLY thing the two synth lines have in common.

I hope the next record is full of lyrics like these. They're so thoughtful and sweet. I especially like, "That's when stars collide. When the space for what you want in your heart is open wide." Love that. And I love that even after so many loves and loves lost, he still keeps his heart open. It's not an easy thing to do. Also, I wonder if his vocals would sound better with a little more high end or reverb or something. I want them to be brighter and less dry. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

This. His worst music is better than the cookie-cutter stuff that's coming out. People complain over and over on this site about how they need new Prince music. People post this almost every day on various forums, and when a new song comes out, they complain. Enjoy the new song- or don't- but appreciate the fact that he's releasing something of better quality than the Top 40 we're fed now.

The writer even name-checked the org and pasted the lyrics from here.
I fully agree with her assessment. Easily the best thing since Guitar.

Symphonies and operas also sound better than what's in the top 40 these days but that still doesn't mean that symphonies and operas aren't boring. They're still boring, they're just not boring as top 40 these days. Andy is a four letter word.
