Summer of 84. I was 8. I woke up one night and heard my brothers and sisters in the living room watching a show called Hot Trax. I got up and joined them. A little while later they showed the video to Let's Go Crazy. My sister pointed out her favorite part of the video which was the "ah, ah is all I heard" scene. I watched the rest of the video and fell in love with the songs and his performance. When the video went off I said "he's my favorite" and he still is! I remember it as clear as day!

my very first encounter with the music? seein lovesexy on the wrecka sto shelf when i wuz about 7 or 8.
then when i wuz 9, i used 2 watch the jukebox network all the time....they'd play the video 4 "kiss" all the time, and i'd always wonder, "how can he sing so high, like a girl??" needless 2 say i fell in love with the song (still my fave p song 2 this day!)...took me a bit longer 2 find out mo', but i didn't get truly hooked till my junior year in hi school. stinkbomb the edit. I had heard Soft and Wet when I was eight years old. I liked the song but I din't know what the words were(imagine my chagrine when I found out). But I really didn't get into him until I was about 14/15 and a friend of mine played Lady Cab Driver for me over the phone. I have been totally fucked up every since.

Hearing "Controversy" on the radio as a kid (musta been 8 or 9), after about a year curiously looking at my cousin's album (the same one). Then, I got 1999 while I was still in elementary school. Had no idea what P was talking about, half the time. I just thought he was cool for playing guitar and being on MTV when he and MJ were the only brothas to do so.
By then, tracks from 1999 were getting solid play on such DC-area stations as WKYS and WHUR, and his occasional video was popping up on the local station's shows and on Friday Night Videos. (how's that for an '80s-show reference? Dang, I'm gettin' old... And, don't you young'uns laugh at an old man's edit, either....) My very first experience with his music was the winter of 1980, my dad brought home the "dirty mind" album, I didn't really get into it that much (I didn't really have any idea what half of the songs were about, ) I did like "uptown" & "when you were mine" a lot, though. And my dad got "controversy" when that first came out but it didn't really impress me (surprisingly). I actually liked The Time's firts album better (my dad got that when it first came out too).
I didn't become hooked until late '82, I was staying up late on a Friday nite watching mtv(I think), and the "1999" video came on. ~KiKi

The magical words: "HELLO SYRACUSE AND THE WORLD..." via satellite on March 30 th 1985.
Of course i knew When Doves Cry etc. before, but didn't realize what the fuss it was all about. While watching this concert in the middle of the night i couldn't believe my eyes and ears...it was so fantastic and stunning. The rest is history... was it really 18 years ago??? @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
