Wouldn't you love Prince to do a covers album?

I love a lot of his live covers and I would give my left nut for studio versions of his covers for Creep, Best Of You or Honky Tonk Woman.

His versions of A Case Of U and Crimson & Clover are amongst his best post-90's work.

There is so much potential and it'd be something a bit different for him also.

I knew somebody was going to come up with this! I suppose can go and compile track lists now...
Slave to the Rhythm
Lost in Music
Dance to the Music
Those songs sum him up perfectly!

He already gave us a taste with 20Ten. That shit was essentially him doing covers of old Prince, and not terribly well.

Cannot imagine that he would ever do it though and it would have to be in his own special way, but in case he is looking for ideas:-
Throw you arms around me - Hunters and Collectors
Unlovable - Darren Hayes
kissing a fool - George Michael
In the wee small hours of the morning
And definitely something by Queen
You know you are in love, when you cannot fall asleep because your reality is finally better than your dreams - Dr Seuss

This topic has come up here before, of course.

In a previous thread, someone listed The Cure's "Just Like Heaven."

Now when I listen to that song, I keep imagining the Prince cover of it.

If he does that, People would say "Oh, he's over, He cant write his own stuff anymore so He's covering other People's songs..." And I would hate that!!

But I would Looove to listen to him doing some Led zeppelin Covers, James Brown Covers, Queen Covers And "Revolution" By the beatles Would Sound AWESOME With his vocals!

Sly Stone of course would be included, probably Santana & Hendrix. I've like to hear him do...

Standing on the Verge of Getting It On -Funkadelic
Everybody is a Star -Sly
Strawberry Letter 23 -Shuggie
Happier than the Morning Sun -Stevie
Everybody Needs Love -Marvin
Stand Back -Stevie

he's pretty good at left field choices, it would be interesting to see his playlist wildsign

It would be gool as long as he didn't do the obvious covers - James Brown, Hendrix or any funk-soul jam.

I'd like to hear him cover more obscure stuff and then he could make it his own. Maybe some more Joni Mitchell and some indie covers

Would I love it? probably not initially. at least in the announcement phase. after I heard it, I might love it, but I'm not sure I could ever get excited about it beforehand without hearing anything, even though I do love SOME of his covers, live and studio.

I wouldn't be a fan. It's bad enough that he has so many covers in his live set without them infecting his albums too.

I find it telling that whilst under contract with WB he didn't release a single cover, then when he became 'free', he instantly released a cover version as first single off his album (which contained another 3 covers).

In fact, if you want a covers album, he's probably released enough now to compile one yourself smile

What have we had?

I Can't Make you love Me (average)

One Of Us (ok)

Betcha By Golly Wow (shudder)

Lalala mean's I love you (puke)

Every Day is a Winding Road (WTF?)

A Case of U (nice)

When Will We B Paid (I like it)

Got 2 Give it up (with Madhouse)

Crimson & clover/Wild Thing (not bad)

Purple House (ok)

You're still the one (shitty quality, don't personally like the song).

Any more?

It's not a compilation I'd want to listen to very often, bo be honest.

blah blah blah

Nope. He has a tendency to not make the songs come alive. Thus, the anti-cover complaints about his live concerts. I love his version of Creep, he did an ok Satisfaction, but the Sly and the Family Stone covers seem lifeless compared to the originals.

This will probably be the concensus, but you must have expected that starting a thread like this.

I like Dazza's suggestion to explore not so well known material that he himself might have a connection with. He could cover those who have covered him lol That could be interesting repaying respect to those who paid their respects... Sinèad O'Connor "I Want Your ( Hands On Me )", Foo Fighter "Best of Me", Tom Jones "What's New Pussycat?", Meli'sa Morgan "Do U Still Love Me", Ani DiFranco "32 Flavors", etc.

Or he could pay tribute to songwriters... someone like Adem would be a cool choice

Nah, wouldn't excite me at all.

On the other hand, if he ever does the newspaper route again, this is something that I could see him doing, except of course I wouldn't know how he'd pay royalties for the songwriters. lol

Funnily, when this came out, NME favourably commented that Prince had turned "Dogshit into Diamonds".

Personally, I've always thought it's quite funky towards the end.

P.S. Does Honky-Tonk Woman from The Undertaker count?
