Yet another version of "We Can Funk"

I'm not sure if this is even worthy of a thread, but I recently heard a cool version of We Can Funk that features another singer aside from Prince (whose vocals aren't really heard until near the end) and George Clinton. Other than that and a few additional lyrics, it's almost exactly the same as the Graffiti Bridge version.

Does anyone know what I'm referring to and who the "mystery vocalist" is? I thought it might be Amp Fiddler since he played keys and sang background on the released track, but I'm not sure.

To me, the best version of this song is the unreleased original--at least the long version I heard--sung by Prince, himself.

Oh, and that "We Can Luv" stuff?! razz Forget it!

We Can Luv? Please say it isn't so?! Who's responsible for THAT? smile

The '86 version was my favorite, but I've been digging the GB one just as much lately. It may be because I've worn out the original.

I don't know what it is about the original--I just can't get enough of it... It "sends" me every time I hear it...

I've heard most versions of this song, and I still like the version that was released on Graffiti Bridge.

The only reason why all these other versions are so loved are because they're unreleased.

Nope. Because the original sounds THAT GOOD.

I agree. the original/demo is head and sholders above the GB version. Prince's vocals give it such a sensual vibe, yet it still has a heavy funk factor. The GB version has that kooky feel that is typical of PFunk songs and it is a bit over-produced. It's fine I guess, but I much rather listen to Prince's demo.

I don't think anyone answered your question but Oui Can Luv (yes, that's the official title) was a version Prandy Allo released late last year. It's still on NPR's Soundcloud. You can listen here http://soundcloud.com/npr...n-luv-full. I hope posting this link is okay.

the original 'demo' is pure funk

but i also like the full length (non Clinton) GB version, you can hear prince's adlibing at the end much clearer "you can blow the candle off me baby" (sic)

Er... did I miss something? I thought the 83 version was only circulating in the form of a short snippet with terrible sound quality... Just asking because some people here speak as if they've heard it entirely.

It may be just a spelling error, but his name was Shider. (Well, anyone can make a mistake)And yes, that was him.

The version on the official album sounds a bit messy in bad way, but I like the long Prince part of the last third. It's the actual verses and chorus that kind of lost their way to me in the released version.

I heard the revamped '86 version first, and was shocked when that wasn't what I heard on the released album. Just like that version of "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" is better to. It's just focused and harder.

Let's not even bring up the released version "Girl o' My Dreams". That was completely fucked up.

My favorite version of the song (#7), with Garry Shider, it just has that full P-Funk sound and a little rougher around the edges. I love Prince doing that screaming background vocal, man, like an aria of funk!

The version from the mid-80s is one of his heaviest funk tracks. The GB version is nice enough, but lacks what made the earlier version really hard-hitting and infectuous. The added chorus on the GB version changes the flow of the track quite a bit as well.

That "people prefer the unreleased tracks only because they are unreleased" line of thought might apply in some cases, but I'd definitely leave this one out of that. Nevertheless, these type of off-the-cuff attempts at psychologizing the fanbase are getting tired on this site.

It's spelled "Garry Shider". At least respect the man (RIP) enough to get his name right!

What's the version from Broadcast 1 where his vocals seem louder? I get confused which is which. Is that the 1986 version?

Basically the 1983 version, all the Graffiti Bridge versions and the Hey Man... Smell My Finger versions share the same basic tracks.

There's the 1986 version which is totally different, a group effort.

Then there's the recent Andy Allo version: acoustic and sung by her.

May I ask what the content of Broadcast 1 is?

It was a bootleg that came out earlier this year around the same time as the Life O' The Party Documentary. It had the version of Rich Friends on it that was sourced from CD. There is a version of We Can Funk on there that is crystal clear which sounds exactly like the one on Box O' Chocolates, however it seems slightly slower and there is a slight vocal effect that you can hear which you can't on the BOC version. It's also almost 15 sec longer.

The original demo and the non-GC 1989 version are essentially the same. The 1989/GB versions just being slightly remixed. Prince didn't record a new vocal track for it in '89 and you can tell this by the snippet's vocals.

Thus, the remixed/non-GC 1989 version is my favorite, though I do also like the 86 version essentially just as much in the grand scheme of things.

I have not heard the snippet at all. However the released version kinda trumps the rest in my opinion. Those undeniable consistant screams during the climax of the song. I do indeed like the extended version that was unreleased..which is missing some elements of the released one....it goes on for a good 10 minutes. I liekd the 1986 version too...but man that climax on Grafitti Bridge gets me everytime doesnt matter.

Album plays and love for vinyl records.
