Prince albums you've never listened to all the way through in one sitting There are some albums I just listen to in their entirety in one sitting, for various reasons. Graffiti Bridge = it's just too shitty. The Prince songs are generally good or great, but the other artists kill me. Emancipation = the highs are high and the lows are low. I just can't help but hit 'skip.' Diamonds and Pearls = there's too much shit. And the early 90's vibe hurts my soul. What are yours? "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I hardly ever listen to albums start-to-finish, but the ones you mentioned would definitely be the most difficult to sit through, as well as Crystal Ball and - both are very long and have many weak spots.

Everything after The Vault, with the exception of Lotusflow3r - managed that all the way through the first time, but not, I don't think, since. I've never heard "I Like Funky Music" in its entirety. Same with "Get on the Boat".

What a question?! I've always listened to all albums all the way through in one sitting! That's how it's meant to be.
But I have to admit that there are lots of albums I haven't listened to twice, especially the newer ones (see vitriol's list).

IMO, the one and only cohesive Prince album is ATWIAD.

I always listen to the entire Cd period-no matter who the artist.
As for revisiting the CDs I don't normally listen to all of Emancipation (sometimes I do), D& P, or 20Ten, Indigo nights I just listen to that Cd twice and never felt the need to listen to it again. I cant tell you how freakin hard is was to listen to Bria's Cd-I almost didn't make it-It was a test I tell you. I still say the music was good but the vocals weren't up to par. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I agree, Indigo Nights.. Prince 4Ever.

yeah, that is a tough one to sit through i don't think i've managed either. i wanted to like it so badly, but it's just not very good. to put it mildly.
same goes for "it ain't over....the aftershow" or whatever it's called.
beyond that, i never quite understood how there are people on this site who say they hate certain prince studio album so much that they can't make it all the way through them even once.
that's some pretty steep hate right there. especially if you're a big enough fan (or were at some point) to sign up to this site. lol.
it doesn't hurt you to listen to an album. heck, just put it on when you're busy washing the dishes or something.
like when people get on thread here and 'boast' that they haven't listened to the bria album yet (and won't do so in the future either). because they are sure that it's shits.
man. the entire disc was written and produced and performed by prince, except for the vocals. so if you're on here, why not just give it a go just to see what he put on there. it's prince songs people. no matter if they're 80s or 00s. you can't hate his new output so much that you aren't even interested in listening 1 single time to an album, be it his own or a protege album.
well, obviously you can be, judging from the many posts on here by people who claim to do just that.
a few weeks back i read a response by someone who said "i never listened to any of The Times' albums and i'm not interested, same with sheila e. don't care".
to me those are almost as much prince albums as his own albums sometimes
oh wait, let me get off my high horse and be honest since i just remembered that it's very, very, very hard to sit through "kamasutra" in one go as well. i think i've managed once or twice tho. but more than a decade ago.

ah ok, now i understand. people don't want to listen to it (at all, or a second time) because they hate the vocals so much? so it's not disinterest in the compositions, it's just hate for the vocals?
i guess i can see the point. but they're not that bad, surely?
like most of his proteges, their singing is just so-so, but it's harmless enough. i mean, it's not a cd full of fingernails on blackboards following the vocal lines, lol.

I think I've actually listened to every album all the way through at least once. I try to give Prince the benefit of the doubt because you never know what genius turn will come in a song at the 2:30 mark.
But here are some I won't listen to all the way through again:
For You Controversy Come Chaos and Disorder Emancipation Crystal Ball/The Truth The Vault Rave The Slaughterhouse Planet Earth Lotus Flow3r/MPLS/Elixer

I never got all the way through "New Power Shit" even one time. All I could do is listen to a few seconds of each track, start cussing, and press the "next" button to the next track. One of the only ones that I even halfway liked was "When You Love Somebody". The rest of the album was a shit hop disgrace. Andy is a four letter word.

I regret that I will no longer be available to have lunch with you on Tuesday.
For me, Emancipation is a big one. Some of those tracks I've actually checked 'skip when shuffling' on them on iTunes... because if I hear them (We Gets Up, anyone?), people will die.
And yes, NewPowerSoul... thank god I was working in a record store when this one dropped and I got to hear it first, because if I hadn't, I would have bought it... (shudder )

Musically speaking light jazz is not my full cup a tea-but with lack luster singing-no real emotion comes across in the voice making it that much more stale. Sade singing that CD would be hot. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

LOL! I actually like about 85% of the songs on For You and Controversy, but I do skip over a few.
I forgot about New Power Soul. That was such a tragedy that I've erased it from my memory!

Interesting choice of albums, because I've edited all of them on my itunes playlist to be more palletable.
I've dumped the asociated artists from Graffitti Bridge (they now appear on Graffitti Bridge part 2, along with the song itself!), and have replaced the tracks with Prince's versions, outtakes & extended versions, and it makes a hell of a difference.
Emancipation has always been a problem for me. I've never liked it, it's just too damn twee and plastic. So for that, I decided to clump tracks together so every other track wasn't a ballad. I used the 'love, sex & liberty' tagline as inspiration. Love= the love songs, Sex = the jazzy/funk stuff & Liberty was the freedom/band sounding tracks. I also replaced a few of tracks I hated with outtakes from the period.
Since doing that, I've played it much more than I did before, and to be honest, the lovesongs disc is now the standout for me. I actually enjoy listening to them all now.
And as for Diamonds & Pearls, I took ex orger Ernest's lead and stripped it of Tony M, then replaced Jughead with Horny Pony, added some extended versions, and again, it's made a massive difference to the amount it now gets played.
blah blah blah | |
