What are ALL of Prince's #1's?? NEED HELP

I am trying to put a playlist together of all his #1's and have searched everywhere to find reliable sources of Prince's #1's. So far I have 7 definite songs that charted #1 around the world and they are:

1. When Doves Cry

2. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World

3. Batdance

4. Kiss

5. Purple Rain

6. Cream

7. Let's Go Crazy

When you post more songs please provide sources so that I can see where you found it.

Surprisingly, I think you have them all, plus one. "Purple Rain" did not go to #1...I think it hit #3.

I dont have any sources to quote, but I think "7" might have gone to the top.

Yup, Stoned is right if you're talking Billboard charts. You have them all. Purple Rain was actually a #2, btw.

TMBGITW was not #1 US, but was in the UK.

If you want to go outside of the Pop charts, then Gett Off was #1 Dance, Theives in the Temple was #1 Black. SOTT may have been #1 Black as well, I'm not 100 percent sure. Check wikipedia.

Hey guys thanks for your input I truly appreciate it. I got my #1's from 2 pretty solid sites mainly from a site called "tsort music" which contains charts from around the world. Purple Rain reached number 1 in Holland and Belgium so I put it as a number 1. But yes you guys are right it did not peak at number 1 in the US or UK. For my particular playlist I'm placing songs that reached number 1 ANYWHERE around the world so to me Purple Rain qualifies. But here's where I run into a little bit of a Problem with Tsort Music...They list other number 1's as Thieves in the Temple, Letitgo, Alphabet Street, My Name is Prince, Betcha By Golly Wow and Beautiful Loved and Blessed as ALL reaching Number 1 in Japan. Furthermore, they go on to say in their sources page that:

"Unfortunately our Japanese text handling is not up to translating the artist names and song titles that are not in Latin text. In addition there are inconsistencies between the names of the same songs from one week to the next. We have tried to make the names consistent and map them as best we can, but there are more corrections to be made."

So I don't know if I can trust that those songs actually reached number 1 and its hard for me to believe that My Name is Prince, Betcha By Golly Wow and B,L & B'sd actually reached number 1 anywhere LOL not to say their not good songs but IMO their just not #1 caliber. Anyway this is why Im reluctant to put them in. If you wanna check out the site here it is: http://tsort.info/music/index.htm

Thanks and sorry for the length of this!

Thank You! I am counting #1's from all over the world and on ALL charts. So that being said I am counting Purple Rain b/c it was #1 in Belgium and in Holland. I looked and I can confirm you're correct with Gett Off as it did reach #1 in the US Billboard Hot Dance Club chart and Thieves in the Temple and Sign 'O' The Times did reach #1 in the US billboard Hot Black Singles chart. So you are 100% correct! Thanks!

What may surprise you, in New Zealand, only Batdance and Alphabet street hit number 1. So did The Most beautiful girl which was #1 for five weeks, but songs like Cream tanked at 15 and Kiss and WDC were #2. Interestingly, I wanna be your lover got to #3 in early 1980. That must be the highest general pop chart placing for the song on its original release anywhere.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Yes you're correct about Alphabet Street. I found that in my sources and I dont know how I missed it. Alphabet Street also got #1 in Norway as well and actually stayed at #1 in Norway for 9 weeks as opposed to New Zealand where it was only #1 for 1 week. as for I Wanna Be Your Lover, yes, #3 was the highest it reached in the general pop charts anywhere. However I Wanna Be Your Lover did reach #1 in US Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart (which is now known as the R&B charts in the U.S.) So it did reach #1 (deservingly so I might add) and that's why it's included in my #1's. Thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

I saw that Let's Work Reached #1 in 1981 (before it was released) in the dance charts but it specifically says "peaked at #1 when PAIRED with Controversy". When it was released as a single in 1982 it did not reach #1 at all so idk if should consider Let's Work really a #1?? IDK???? lol.

Okay so after doing some extensive research I've decided to remove "Let's Work" as a #1 due to the fact that it was number 1 WHEN PAIRED with "Controversy" in 1981. However, "Let's Work" was not released as a single until 1982. Also, If you look at the US billboard Dance charts "Erotic City" was #1 WHEN PAIRED with "Let's Go Crazy" and "17 Days" was #1 WHEN PAIRED with "When Doves Cry" but we all know that "Erotic City" and "17 Days" are not part of Prince's #1's so neither should "Let's Work" be. Now as for 1999 (single) I have only found Wikipedia as a source to say it peaked at #1 in the US billboard hot Dance Charts. I would love to put this in as a #1 but I cant find any other sources that concur with Wikipedia and Mathiwn3's claim that 1999 reached #1. If Anyone can help with this dilemma it will be greatly appreciated. Here is the update so far on Prince's #1's:

1. When Doves Cry #1 US Bb (Hot 100, Black & Dance ), Canada & Australia)

2. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (#1 UK, Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand & Spain)

3. Batdance #1 US Bb (Hot 100 & Black), Switzerland, Norway, Canada, New Zealand & Japan)

4. Kiss #1 US Bb (Hot 100 & Black)

5. Purple Rain #1 Netherlands & Belgium

6. Cream #1 US Bb Hot 100

7. Let's Go Crazy #1 US Bb (Hot 100 & Black) & Canada

8. Gett Off #1 US Bb Hot Dance

9. Thieves In The Temple #1 US Bb Hot Black

10. Sign 'O' The Times #1 US Bb Hot Black

11. Diamonds & Pearls #1 US Bb Hot R&B

12. I Wanna Be Your Lover #1 US Bb Hot Soul

13. Alphabet Street #1 Norway & New Zealand

14. Controversy #1 US Bb Disco Top Chart

15. *1999 #1 US Bb Disco Top Chart

*Not Confirmed #1

Anyone who would like to provide sources that 1999 truly peaked at #1 is extremely encouraged to do so! Thank You

Okay so thanks to the source provided by Mathiwn3 I've been able to make another addition but at the same point another cut as well. 1999 Did indeed reach #1 in the US Bb Hot Dance in 1982. However I did notice/confirm that Controversy did not peak at #1 on its own and that it was Controversy/Let's Work that reached number 1 on the dance charts as a mix. This reasoning was the same reasoning for dropping "Let's Work" earlier in this thread. In case others are interested, other dance mixes of Prince's that reached #1 was Let's Go Crazy/Erotic City, When Doves Cry/17 Days, Raspbery Beret/She's Always In My Hair, Pop Life (Remix)/Hello and Kiss(Remix)/Love or $.

Anyways the new and current list of confirmed #1 Singles for Prince ARE:

14. 1999 #1 US Bb Hot Dance

If anybody has any other #1 Singles w/ sources please keep em' comin' Thanks!

As I said right above your post:

"Okay so thanks to the source provided by Mathiwn3 I've been able to make another addition but at the same point another cut as well. In case others are interested, other dance mixes of Prince's that reached #1 was Let's Go Crazy/Erotic City, When Doves Cry/17 Days, Raspbery Beret/She's Always In My Hair, Pop Life (Remix)/Hello and Kiss(Remix)/Love or $."

So as you can see neither controversy nor lets work reached number 1 by themselves.

Prince definitely didn't have as many number ones as other artists such as Mariah, Michael, Janet, Madonna etc., but he's "number one with a bullet on my charts" cool

Who cares about those numbers anyway, it's all payola driven as he points out in Jukebox With A Heartbeat, not really the measure of an artist

You could arguaby add

Manic Monday

Nothing Compares 2 U

Glamorous Life

No he absolutely did not have as many #1's as them but it doesnt matter Im not doing this to compare Im simply doin this for knowledge and to make a playlist. Otherwise IDC where he charts in the world b/c anyone who knows music knows he charts #1 overall! and thats a fact!

and yes you could arguably add those but unfortunately I won't in this list sad
