I have converted MANY with Joy in Repetition. That is a must in any compilation.

Off the top of my head I also think Housequake, DMSR, Adore, Anotherloverholenyohead, Lets Go Crazy 12", Girls & Boys, Strange Relationship, $, & Erotic City are good at converting the non-believers.

I think Adore is a bit too extreme an R&B love ballad for most people. Unless they are already into that genre.

I agree...but it's SOOO Prince...sexy, romantic, and funny (well, maybe not the ride)...and I think that ending is the best closer of a Prince song & album. I also think it's his best ballad. Can you tell that I totally dig this tune or what? lol

I suspect the song "Gold" is going to make people run! It's to cheesy production-wise in it's final form.

The best way is let him see Prince live, dats always worked 4 me. I converted both of my sisters and many peers. Not only will he be overwhelmed with Princes stage presence, but will see how talented he is, voice, playing instruments, ect.

The only people I ever think are worth converting are the true music lovers who value musicianship and could care less about popularity or charts.

With that audience in mind, The Undertaker is powerful, Parade & the Madhouse LPs do well, and maybe a mixed selection of cuts with their individual tastes in mind.

These are my thoughts aswell.

Why bother trying to convert them with the radio hits?

I say, let them hear The Ballad Of Dororthy Parker, and if it clicks, then contunie, otherwise forget about it!

I had a similar story to this the past week or so at work. Somehow Prince came up in the conversation with fellow co-workers at my job (I think this black guy named James started randomly singing Do Me, Baby in the breakroom, that sounds racist, I'm not), and I'm like "Is that Prince? I fuckin love Prince!". Everybody thought I was joking because I don't look like your typical Prince fan but a couple other people I work with and have gone out drinking with know that I am totally obsessed. Anyway, this one girl is like "Wow, I can't believe you like Prince". I started talking about it to her and it turns out she only knows a couple of songs like DM,B, I Would Die 4 U, 1999. I told her I have 26 albums by the guy and a lot of stuff she's probably never even heard of, and he used to release them once a year, and some of em are double, triple, even quadruple CD's. But you already know that.

Long story short, er... I made her a "mixtape" I guess you could call it of some of his dancier, 80's only songs. But of course, I slow it down a couple times smile

I think it's ok to post a tracklisting... it's not really a DJ mix, per se, and it's definitely not audio. Mods, orgers, correct me if I'm wrong.

80's Prince Dance Mix:

01. Let's Go Crazy

02. She's Always In My Hair

03. U Got The Look

04. Kiss (Extended Version)

05. Controversy

06. Delirious

07. Sexuality

08. When Doves Cry

09. Dirty Mind

10. 200 Balloons

11. Let's Work

12. Head

13. Baby I'm A Star

14. Do Me, Baby

15. Erotic City

16. Forever In My Life

Yea yea, I know the first couple of songs I stole the order from the Rave DVD but goddamn do they go so well together. This chick is into r&b, Al Green kinda shit. I don't know, let me know what you think.

Oh, so I guess in my comment earlier above, it wasn't really converting a non-believer into one. She was already into him. The point of the story I tried mentioning earlier was as we were talking, this other black guy walks past us and he's like "Prince is gay". I talk to this guy, so I'm just like, "Dude, Prince is like the straightest motherfucker there is... and he wears heels. lol. He fucked Carmen Electra. Carmen Electra, dog. He even gave her that name".

So THIS WAS MY ATTEMPT TO TURN A NON-BELIEVER INTO ONE, as is the point of this thread. This guy is into hiphop, rap, a lot of newschool shit I won't even touch (I like rap, but mostly only oldschool stuff like NWA, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan, Biggie, etc. but a lot of this shit nowadays just sounds stupid to me, ie: Kanye, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Mac Miller, etc.) So I told him I'd make him a "gangster" Prince mix... or as gangster as I thought Prince could get. Check this out.

Gangsta Prince Mix:

01. Days Of Wild

02. 18 & Over

03. Lovesign (Shock G. Remix)

04. I Wanna Melt With U

05. NPG Operator

06. The Max

07. Pheromone

08. Tell Me How U Wanna B Done (feat. Carmen Electra)

09. Dig U Better Dead

10. NPG Operator

11. Acknowledge Me

12. Face Down

13. Letitgo

14. My Name Is Prince

15. Loose!

16. Dead On It

17. Pope

18. Gett Off

I have yet to give it to him, but tell me what you guys think. Originally, I had Black Sweat in place of Dead On It, and I didn't put the 2 because it's barely over 80 mins (I like to fill my mixes up!), but I really wanted DOI on there. That fucking little guitar lick (you know which one I'm talking about) is just TOO FUCKING COOL! So Black Sweat had to go, even though I love that song.

^I think you should include Vanity 6, Time, George Clinton collabs if you're going to try get gangster... Songs like Nasty Girl, Release It, Paradigm, Tricky, would compliment songs like Sex Me Sex Me Not, Head, The Sex of It, DMSR, some of his live stuff like Let's Get Satisfied, etc. Just unleash the meanest, nastiest funk on him cool

Oh, and trust me, I've thought about it. But let's be honest, that's just pure, nasty funk. Which I like. But in this case, I was trying to go for a "West Coast gangster rapper pop-your-ass-with my gat" kinda shit lol. Or the closest I could get coming from Prince. Paradigm is a really sick song, I would agree with you on that one, Sex Me, Sex Me Not actually crossed my mind of being on the latter mix, Black Sweat actually was until right before I burned it. But while those songs definitely have a cool vibe, I just didn't think they worked overall for what I was trying to do for him. Maybe they would work if I were making that mix for a girl, but I was making it for a guy that listens to Lil Wayne and Kanye West. I don't know though, I do have I Wanna Melt With U on there though, so I guess your point is valid. I just thought that song worked better though. But I wanted the vast majority of shit to be like Dead On It and My Name Is Prince, you know? Head was on the 80's mix I did. Great song. DMSR was getting mad plays back in the day, even contemplated that being a tattoo. But Release It?! That song makes me laugh. Not trying to be a dick though.

I was going to try to do a gangster (some of the songs I used on the latter mix)/smooth r&b mix for this other dude I know who wanted one, but he's already kinda somewhat into Prince and told me to play TMBGITW at his wedding, whenever that happens. He loves that song. So maybe those songs would be more appropriate then. Off top of my head, that, and Man'O'War were gonna be on it.

I don't think some of these songs you guys are picking are good choices to introduce someone to Prince's music. I would recommend getting them a copy of Ultimate, The Hits/The B-Sides, Controversy, 1999, PR, Parade or SOTT to start off. To me, these albums/compilations give you a good overview of Prince.

You definitely don't want to start them off with something like LoveSexy, Graffiti Bridge, New Power Soul or any of the NPGMC stuff. Not saying they are not good, but these projects are an acquired taste.

honestly .. trying to appeal to your friends gangsta side with prince rapping is probably the worst way to go with this .. most people that listen to much hip hop would be embarrassed to listen to prince piss poor rapping stylz .. if i were u i would let prince best attributes shine with a subtle leaning towards funk instead of say .. rnb or pop or rap or gospel or blues .. and lean a little towards the darker stuff since even tho diamonds and pearls is a grade a pop tune .. you can't truly appreciate it until you really open your mind to that side of prince .. pheremone is a good choice as might be shockadelica .. and if i was your girlfriend .. since jay z and beyonce copped a line out of that the reference might not be lost on him .. i woulnt avoid a classic like .. how come u dont call .. as long as its the b side version .. later in the set just to wham bam hit em with the pure simple genius of prince just for a taste after he gets his funk on .. purple rain should be the final song .. last heart is pretty gangsta .. irresistable bitch .. i wonder u .. pop life kirky j mix .. feel u up .. 17 days .. once he gets a love for prince you can introduce him to some of the other styles but keep it pure prince best tunes until he gets curious about his other work .. under no circumstance allow him to hear prince rapping .. i think it will turn him off if he is a hip hop fan .. in my opinion cool

Out of all the mixes offered so far, this one would be the one I'd go with.

Gives them a taste of what Prince is capable of without being too hits oriented or too

hardcore fan/PrinceFreak oriented.

Of course it really depends on what type of music your friend likes to begin with and then put in a couple songs based on they listen to.

The only additions I'd make to this list would be:

Let's Work

Musicology

Controversy

Money Don't Matter...

The best way to convert somebody to Prince is to take them to a live concert. I played P music for my son but when I took him to a live performance, he was gone... lol Now, he plays Prince on a regular basis on guitar and bass... smile

While I think your opinion is very valid I wouldn't agree. It's true, to the real Prince fan, his rapping is questionable... horrible even. But the reason I wouldn't, the reason I couldn't start a non-fan with The Best Of/Ultimate or songs daPrettyman and XNY (both valid opinions as well) offered is because I myself don't even like some of those songs and I'm obsessed with Prince. To me, it's like being a chef or picking up women, I'd rather put a little bit of myself into something I feel confident about rather than go the easy route and tell him/them/whoever to get a Best Of collection, or this album or that. That being said, I have, however, gotten one of my friends into Prince to the point where he's even talking about him on a somewhat often basis with albums like 1999, Sign O' The Times, and Crystal Ball, specifically. But on this occasion, because I also want to get back into DJing (something I used to do), I chose to make a mix based on songs that I liked that I felt confident enough to present him with that I felt he would enjoy. And it turns out I talked to him the other day and he liked it. And while he didn't like every single song, it was still pleasent enough for him to come up to me and tell me about some of the songs he did like, and that's all I can ask for. The same could be said if I had just told him to get The Best Of/Ultimate or PR or whatever, he probably would've liked some songs but probably not the entirety. But the thing is this guy works in a different department than I do and his supervisor is a woman who is very much into Prince but again, only knows the typical pop songs. I burned this exact same mix for her yesterday and today she told me she loved it. Her and the guy who was originally singing "Do Me, Baby" in an earlier post talk and I guess she had played him a little bit of the first track "Days Of Wild" and by "in a couple of simple fuckin phrases" he wanted to hear more.

I'm not trying to dispute or argue with you or anyone else, simply have a conversation. Shockadelica, Diamonds, Girlfriend, they're all good songs, but I couldn't put "If Eye Was Ur Girlfriend" on it just because the title would probably freak him out to the point of him avoiding me because he thinks I'm gay. But it's one of my favorite songs. I just did what I felt good about. Really I made this mix thinking what's something that I would listen to rather than what I thought he would listen to, you know? Either way or in any case, I think he's coming around, and that was the point, right? To open the non-believers eyes.

If you're going to convert someone who likes Purple Rain and Kiss but has never even heard When Doves Cry, then don't waste your time playing Curious Child for them. I would, however, shock them right out of the gate with P Control. If you've never heard Prince like that, then it's definitely going to get your attention. Here's my take on it:

1. P Control

2. Let's Go Crazy

3. Little Red Corvette

4. Love

5. Cream

6. Alphabet St.

7. I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man

8. When Doves Cry

9. I Would Die 4 U

10. Chlesea Rogers

11. 17 Days

12. A Million Days

13. Dance 4 Me

14. When You Were Mine

15. 1999

16. Raspberry Beret

17. Gold

I would suggest nothing. Prince is deliberately trying to shit on fans, so why give him another one? Because what will happen is this:

They'll want to hear everything he's done; They'll come here, & start an account; Defend him when others who have been a fan for decades talks shit about him; Then they'll realize he's a asshole while digging deeper & finding out more about him; Then, they will start making threads saying the same shit about his "issues" as a lot of us already have hundreds of thousands of times over.......

This cycle will never end until we become more responsible & put an end to it ourselves.

I think I've posted this list before, but this CD has "converted" quite a few non-believers in my life, both young and old, and there's not one "mainstream" Prince song on it. I always tell them to listen to the diversity, how he flows from one style to the next, and I always hear, "I never knew he was so amazing!" Using one of those "programs", I'm able to "remaster" and segue certain songs together seamlessly, otherwise it doesnt work! Here goes:

overall a very nice set, despite a few quibbles (Do U Lie? really? and Starfish And Coffee is a little iffy, but I remember loving it when I was first becoming a fan, and it's the jaded old man in me that probably poo-poos it now).

but how do you qualify 2 top 10 US hits as not being mainstream? (PL & ICNTTPOYM). I know what you mean, of course. they're not ones you're likely to hear, of the 5-8 Prince songs that radio still plays. just think it's a funny claim smile

Don't make it like everyone else old or new is as unreasonable as the rest of yall.

we've been doing this since at least 1997. the young ones will learn that this is their lot in life and to accept it, embrace it, then get over it. lol

No, it is not true. Dont even try that 'you know its true' stuff to try and make your argument seem feasible.

There arent even more than 30 new fans here since 2005 and from all accounts they really dont give a damn or obsess like you and some others do

aka they are normal lol

Hey, I didn't realize this thread has turned into another "Prince sucks" thread. Since there are now at least three or four going at the same time, I can just go back and forth between them.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.
