Time Out Chicago Interview

http://timeoutchicago.com...-interview

Observations:

1. Prince types in all caps. Most people see that as shouting, I see it as "Grandma discovered email."

2. If he talked like he writes, he'd be a pretentious weirdo.

3. Horns, stand up please!

4. I wonder what "we're finally filming" means. Doesn't he shoot all his shows, or at the very least keep a tape of the feed going to the monitors?

I hope since he's putting all this work into these 3 shows, he just keeps touring, since the band's already in that mode.

My $0.02

Prince

What are your memories of early shows in 1980 and ’81 at the Uptown Theatre and Park West? Why do you think Chicago audiences took to your act so quickly?

WE’RE NOT 1 2 REMINISCE BUT WE ALWAYS GOT THE AUDIENCE WE DESERVED AND THAT TIME WAS PRETTY WILD. CHICAGO IS A MUSIC TOWN. MY FATHER SPOKE OF IT OFTEN AS BEING ONE OF THE PLACES HE LIKED 2 PLAY BEST. THEY HAVE SEEN THE BEST AND EXPECT NOTHING LESS.

You’ve worked with local artists like Chaka Khan and Mavis Staples. Is there something special about the Chicago scene?

IT COULD HAPPEN ANYWHERE BUT GROUPS LIKE RUFUS FEATURING CHAKA KHAN MIXED DIFFERENT GENRES WELL BUT ALWAYS KEPT THE SONG 1ST. SAME 4 THE STAPLES SINGERS. RESPECT YOURSELF? BEYOND SPECIAL.

Of all the Chicago shows you’ve played, which was your favorite?

THE NEXT ONE! smile

Should local fans expect anything special at these shows?

WHEN ASKED BY VAN JONES IF WE WOULD B WILLING 2 HELP PROVIDE A LITTLE RELIEF 4 THE WORKING PEOPLE OF THE CITY, WE THOUGHT IT BEST 2 PUT 2GETHER A SETLIST THAT FEATURED ALOT OF FUN PARTY SONGS AND SOME OLDER CLASSICS BY FAVORITE ARTISTS THAT WERE EASILY RECOGNIZABLE. A NIGHT 2 REMEMBER. THIS BAND HAS FINE-TUNED THE SHOW WE GONNA PLAY 4 3 YEARS NOW AND WE R FINALLY FILMING IT 4 EVERYONE 2 C. WHEN THE CAMERAS ROLL, SO DOES THIS ORCHESTRA. WE R BRINGING AN 11-PIECE HORN SECTION 2 PLAY ON A FEW NUMBERS. THEY WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!

Tell us about your relationship with Marva Collins of Westside Preparatory School.

ONE OF THE 1ST CHARTER SCHOOLS WE VISITED IN THE EARLY 80’S AND HELP 2 CEMENT R CONTINUED COMMITMENT 2 EDUCATION AND ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE.

These concerts are raising funds and awareness for Van Jones’s Rebuild the Dream campaign, dedicated to community-based economic solutions.

A NECESSARY ENDEAVOR. AS ONE OF JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES WE R ASKED AFTER EVERY CONVENTION 2 CLEAN UP ANY MESS THAT WE MADE 4 THE NEXT OCCUPANTS OF THE BUILDING. WE FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT THIS COUNTRY. SHOULDN’T WE TRY 2 LEAVE IT IN BETTER SHAPE THAN WHEN WE FOUND IT? WE ALL GOT ALOT OF WORK 2 DO. PLEASE JOIN US.

Wow, looks like Chicago is in for a treat.

I wish he'd stop saying this as we all know how far this goes...he could have released a live DVD years ago from so many great shows but wont for some reason

As ONE of Jehova's Witnesses WE are asked???? U're overdoing it with that "we" thing, brother...
And this interview confirms another one of my fears: The 11 horns are only going to be there on a few songs. The rest will be another greatest hits show. Oh well..
Guess I've just seen him too many times...

I'm not gonna lie, when I read his response to all the questions, I read it in Tracy Morgans voice when he's screaming and I imagined Tracy Morgan dressed up like Prince like in that episode of 30 Rock...

Those live episodes(the e & w coast feeds were different). Those were classic! Tracy's prince is the best prince.

I suggested in another thread that what he really should do is sell a limited and numbered edition DVD of the Chicago concerts (or one of them) on an exclusive basis at the next Welcome 2 residency, wherever that might be. If the only place you can buy the official DVD is at the next concert, collectors will have another incentive to go to the shows.

Did anyone else notice Prince using the royal “WE”?

“ONE OF THE 1ST CHARTER SCHOOLS WE VISITED IN THE EARLY 80’S AND HELP 2 CEMENT R CONTINUED COMMITMENT 2 EDUCATION AND ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE.”

He isn’t writing about this band, or the NPG in general, if he is referring to the 1980s and the present. Prince is now referring to himself as we.

But I really envy Chicago right now. Prince with a 20 piece band including 11 horns is going to be legendary. He could bring this act to NYC and sell out MSG for weeks.

He went there with Camille so the pronoun is accurate.

Yes, I think it is going to be a great show. I hope he does release the video (of course it will be filmed, but whether we ever see it is another question).

Well, after reading the reviews of the concert last night I highly doubt a DVD will ever see the light of day.
