Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife

I gotta say, at the moment this is my fave song on Emancipation, and as I haven't read much about your thoughts on this track, I was wondering if I could get some... so yeah, what ya'll think of it?

I too think this is such a beautiful song, but to be honest I can hardly listen to it anymore. It was written for Mayte and he was so in love with her. Now it just breaks my heart to hear it. I think Mani is lovely and I sincerely hope Prince is happy with her, but his love for Mayte was so clear to all of us from the wonderful songs he wrote for her.

I like the song a lot but wish it didn't have that over-produced feeling...especially with the drums.

I have worn a groove in my Disc II of Emancipation! Of course, that is impossible but I do play it a whole lot. That and Emancipation Disc III. It is a wonderfully beautiful song, as were many that he wrote for her.

A beautiful song.
Music is such a beautiful way in which to express ones love for another,
No matter what happened later on they were words written by someone in love at the time.

...Also, it's sincerely a 'wifey' type of song, a 'wedding bell, being in love' kind of song, so it's no wonder he wrote it for her, the love is felt all over the lyrics and the way he sings it...heart,Whoa! Overwhelming, special touchy, and a convincing feeling to the max...

One thing, I agree with is that a lot of the times when I listen to it, I do get some kind of a reminder of how could a man love a woman so much, or be so in love, and then it all just ends, when what he felt was such a wonderful feeling, and the song expresses it so beautifully, the bond and joy of being so truly in love with another person, that also makes one realize a couple of things, but what you get from it the most, and at maximum, is how sincere the love was, and is, whenever you hear that song, and it’s so warmly felt, so divine, can’t top that, one, very, VERY special song...

I love this song also, apparently it was played to Mayte on their wedding day. Aaaawww. The first thing I remember noticing when I first heard this song, was the mention of "love of my life"...VERY different theme for Prince, I've never heard him use sentimental expressions of love like that before or since. So yeah, it's sad to think that the relationship didn't last; it was so nice to know the man had finally found his true love. And they seemed so perfect for eachother, those two.

B E A U T I F U L song. A bit 90's sounding, but lovely all the same.

When this album came out, I thought it stood out a mile. The day 'Emancipation' came out I had to listen to it just before I went to sleep, I wanted it to be the last thing I heard. Nowadays, I only listen to it occasionally - songs like this, 'Comeback', etc., I never ever want to tire of. So I listen to them sparingly.

Apparently, Prince composed this in Tokyo (I think) in secret each night, whilst Mayte slept. He then presented it at their wedding reception as the First Dance.

IMAGINE Mayte's reaction... she was one happy lady, I bet. It's so sad things didn't work out between them.

Co-sign all the positive thoughts. One of my favourites.

Has anyone heard Blackstreet's "Let's Stay In Love" from the same year though? Has a very similar feel to the point you can interchange the vocals...

LittlePill - not sure I understand your remark (!) but, of course, having been releaed in 1996 it WILL have a '90's sound'.

What I mean is that it has traces of that mid-late 90's Kirky J influence. So whilst I think it's a wonderful composition, I would've preferred a more live, organic production (something he's returned to of late, thankfully).

Ok. You're gonna hate me, but I can't stand this song. I remember when E first came out and everyone was going on and on about FLSMW and I just couldn't get into it.

Even now CD 2 is my favorite (and will be in my top five along with Under the CherryMoon) I always skip this song.

Sorry folks, you're on your own with this one.

"Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother and Wife.."

The song sums up the universal love...the feminine aspect of the creation of seed...the father in heaven gave woman the seed to create love in all aspects of man boy child son's lives...without the seed of LOVE there is no love...the song sums up...the

SEED OF LOVE that a WOMAN offers to a man "unconditionally"
UNIVERSALLY.
