as the Red White & Blue band
September 23. 1984 Sept. 23, 1984: “Prince had been to Bogart’s to see James Brown (in 1982), and obviously he patterned some of his dance routines after James. When he did his dress rehearsal date for the Purple Rain tour, which was in all the major venues, he did it at Bogart’s. They came in as the Red White and Blue Band. It was 5 bucks, and I guess the word got out that it was going to be Prince, because this thing was sold out in advance. I’ll never forget standing there next to these two young women. People just started cheering and it was a crescendo that kept building. There was a performer who was on stage, backlit, and one girl looks to the other girl and says, ‘Look at that guy, trying to be Prince.’ And the other girl looks at her and says, ‘That is Prince!’ - Bogart's owner Alan Porkolab on the club's legendary performances

ALAN LEEDS: Before we set out on the Purple Rain tour, it was a case of Prince wanting to see what Michael and the Jacksons were doing in terms of production, lighting, staging and everything with the Victory tour. We charted a jet with a couple of his bodyguards and Jerome Benton from the Time and Leroy Bennett, who was Prince’s lighting and production designer for his tours. We flew to Dallas to the old stadium where the Cowboys played. There was a feeling in our camp that while what they were doing was a very solid stadium production, there was nothing really cutting edge about the technology. The Varilites, which was a brand name for a type of computerized lighting, was the gold standard in the industry at that time. And we made sure we had all that shit. But the Jackson’s production didn’t. Prince had a lot of respect for Michael, but he was mildly impressed with the show.

Some great stuff in here, nice one. I'd loved to have seen this tour, one of, if not his best.
Now I'm just gonna scroll back up for a better look at Sheila in Chicago.

Wow! I just realized that he is not using his Hohner here but instead a Fender Telecaster. You can tell by the bridge pickup on the plate. Always thought he had a second Hohner that he used for this spraying effect
