i think they all kind of served their purpose, except "if i was your girlfriend" which just went way over most people's heads, and despite it being a truly unique work of art, it wasn't a pop song or a 'single', no. but you have to applaud him for daring to release that at the time.
peach, was a good enough single and a catchy, great tune. radio didn't really pick it up at the time, no. but the song has proved it has staying power. it's still bangin and it had a lot going for it. somehow it just didn't go over well with a large audience. a shame.
greatest romance, imo, a good single. a good song. i know most people here hate it or think it's just stupid. but i like it, a lot. and for me, it was a great lead single to an album that didn't follow up to expectations.
i hate u. bit of a weird single choice given that the album had so many commercial and strong cuts. as the very last single it might have been ok. or simply as a promo. i would have picked "319" over this any day. or just release dolphin as a single, finally.
betcha by golly wow. now there is a single choice that killed the momentum of the album full stop. truly horrible choice for a first single. abominable. it's not even in my top 3 worst songs on emancipation, but as the lead single, come on prince. damn.
i never quite understood why "arms of orion" had to be a single when he could have just taken something else off the album and put some more promo behind that. was there a us release to "the future" or "electric chair"? both could have had their own release with those strong remixes and perhaps a radio edit or something.
i also felt that "the work" didn't really represent TRC very well. perhaps that's why it was such a (very, very pleasant) shock when i first listened to the album and it was so good many singles on that album. but an edit of any of the longer songs would have been a better choice than this kind of paint by numbers james brown-ish song.

"I Hate U" was very successful on the charts. It peaked within the top 10 of the R&B/Hip-Hop & Rhythmic Charts and it reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Hardly a poor choice as a single.
Also he does not like being called Taffy...So don't call him that.

I think it boils down to Prince's whole "give wha they need--not what the want" attitude.
He's been trying to score a hit with a "on the couch" ballad since The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.
Betcha By Golly, Te Amo Bore-me-zone, Call My Name, Greatest Romance, ....none of these should ever be first singles if you're trying to get your album noticed.
BUt his videos are also boring as hell now though. I mean Greatest Romance had him standing...sitting....looking...standing....sitting...looking pensive.
Black Sweat (which wasn't a bad choice for a single I guess) had him standing...sitting...standing...
I mean, a 50 year old man doing some of the movies from the KISS video would have obviously been ....strange. But couldn't the video's be more ....alive? They're so dead. Like I've said a million times, if you're working up a black sweat, then bitch...do something!
Prince is not a sit--stand still---sit live performer....I just don't get why his videos are that way. So damned boring.
But even his worse albums are more intersting than that Katy Perry nonsense, so much of it is public interest and promotion.

"Black Sweat" is about the only Prince video I enjoy watching.

Glam Slam as the follow up single to Alphabet St. killed the momentum of Lovesexy.
Although 3 things, really, killed the momentum. The Glam Slam single, the controversy with the album cover, and Prince not touring the Lovesexy album in the U.S. when the album first came out, choosing to tour overseas first instead.

That broadway like production of the LoveSexy tour had 2 b tried out first overseas. To make it work successfully here in the states. There was a lot going on that stage... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! From what I've read on this site, "I Hate U" was big on the radio, and popular with casual and non-fans.. so it must've been a good choice for a single.. though I also think "Dolphin" should have been a single.
I agree with "My Name Is Prince"; and though I like a lot of the songs, I agree that a slow or midtempo song usually isn't a good choice for 1st single.

I would have done this for Love Symbol Sexy M.F. (Perfect for the rap and R&B stations) 7 (Good song for pop stations) And God Created Woman (The Insatiable to D&P's Cream) The Continental (Very dancey but still great for R&B stations) My Name Is Prince (The translation to hip-hop comes out full force)

Yeah, Te Amo Corazon was a bit of a bore, that's the main one for me. We're here, might as well get into it.

MNIP went top 10 in the UK.
In general I agree though. The string of lead single ballads post-MBGITW was completely misguided. Mix that with the name change/WB mess meant the remainder of the 90s was a total write-off.
Some of the 80s ones aren't so much poor singles, as poor follow-up singles - IIWYG, Mountains, Glam Slam - all great songs in their own right and mostly single material, but not as single #2. Parade and SOTT faired the worst I think. And many singles were just plain underpromoted - Pop Life should've been a monster surely, but with no video it's a miracle any casual fan knows it - many don't. Black Sweat was the closest thing Prince had to a genuine hit single comeback, but it wasn't promoted despite having a slick looking video.

"Glam Slam" was a poor choice for a single. The song works well as an album track but it was too boring and uneventful for pop radio in 1988.A much better choice would have been the lively, relentless title track.
"If I Was Your Girlfriend" was also a poor choice for a single. What was he thinking? I personally love the song and it's clearly a fan favorite, but it's not for mainstream audiences.Even our local R&B station (which usually supported new Prince singles) didn't give this song alot of airplay.
"Mountains" was also a questionable single.I think most people can listen to Parade and pick out the obvious singles: "Kiss","Girls And Boys" and "Anotherlovenyohead".Nothing else on that album would have worked on pop radio in 1986.

I agree. The first single from a Prince album should always be an uptempo track. That's what he's known for.Releasing "Betcha By Golly Wow" (a sappy remake) as the first single from Emancipation was a huge mistake. The catchy, infectious "Sleep Around" would have been the perfect choice for first single.

I think Glam Slam is definately the weakest of these three, but IMO the other two can work great as singles - in the right situation.
A video for IIWYG would've gone a long way to explaining the emotion of the song and it's provocative title. Following SOTT didn't work at all, it should've been U Got The Look or Housequake, or if they still wanted a message or more serious song, The Cross - which stays with the theme of the title track and keeps the project in that light, but I still think an upbeat number was the way to go. Had SOTT been promoted to buggery, IIWYG would work great later down the line as a single, or double A-side.
Mountains much the same, not single #2 - G&B for that one, two punch with Kiss. Had UTCM been a hit, Mountains would make sense as a final celebratory fanfare single, much like in the movie - imagine Prince touring at the time, and they release a live 12" version a la I Would Die 4 U. That is how I see a song like Mountains working as a single.
Hey Prince, you dork - hire me for your single choices!

Peach!?
Since when can a new song kill the release of a Greatest Hits album!? If people are buying a greatest hits, its most like they're NOT buying it for the new track.

Don't care for the Alphabet St video but LOVE the Glam Slam video but the song even though I like, wasn't the best single release

For me the worst of the bunch was Betcha By Golly Gag crap For a 3CD set of new music that was to be your chance to finally be free of the WB you choose a friggin remake? At the time I was so disappointed and knew he had just sunk this project. There were so many other options to choose from. It was all about bringing all this new exciting unconstrained music to the masses and we got a crappy remake. More like Betcha By Golly DOH!!! The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.
Remember there is only one destination and that place is U All of it. Everything. Is U.

Betcha By Golly Wow was the worst choice. In the UK there was quite alot of interest in his first independent release. What a fucking let down. Why?????? So many other good tunes.
I Hate U was a close second to worst single choice. Never got that song.
Dance On would have made a great single from Lovesexy.
I'm afraid Tony M killed all the singles from D&P and Symbol. Just imagine how awesome My Name Is Prince would be now if that god-awful rap wasn't on it. Walk Don't Walk would have made a great single from D&P I reckon.

Hate U was a hit single. Stop saying it was a poor choice!!!!
What baffled me was why he didn't release the video 4 it...Could never understand that... [Edited 8/21/12 9:05am] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! wasn't this followe with U Got The Look and I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, which peaked at 2 and 10 respectively.
And My Name Is Prince was followed by 7, which was a top 10 hit.
During his WB days, Prince was able to do something pretty unusual, he could release a song and have it bomb, even consecutive songs, then have the next single be a huge hit. He didn't just do it once or twice, he did it repeatedly. I count 11 differnt times he had a top 10 hit, then a string of one or more singles that failed to crack the top 40 or didn't chart at all, only to return with yet another top 10 hit.
In the case of the Symbol album, it wasn't until the 4th single until he cracked the top 10, the first 3 didn't crack the top 20.

The poorest choice of all was not even picking a single for Around The World In A Day. He just sent that album to the radio stations and expected them to play whatever the hell they wanted. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The amount of hate that Tony M gets on this site is overwhelming He is not that bad, T.C. ellis however:-o
I think "Glam Slam" & "I Wish U Heaven" were both horrid single choices (though the extended I wish U heaven is a personal favorite)
Mountains was a weird choice because nobody really knew what he was saying lol Most albums after Purple Rain had bad single choices in honesty. Think had Prince listened to others and not danced to his own drummer. He would had sold like MJ seriously. He lost a lot of fans with the "I'll tell you what you like" attitiude toward singles as they felt he lost it. Housequake "as a B side? Adore got more play than If I was Your girlfriend ever could. Good Love getting a gang of radio play and you leave off the Lovesexy LP??? We could on and on
The truth is he did release music too fast back then. NOW he would be golden releasing music like that.

But he's acting cool. I think this is the whole notion of that behaviour, when he's sitting and posing etc...it's his style of voguing pimp Prince style. I'd have thought you knew that already. He once said he doesn't wanna dance in videos, cause he thinks the idea of them are shit to begin with. Can't remember which song now. Prince I will always miss and love U.

ATWIAD had good single choices and the B sides were perfect company especially Hello going along with the 'drama' of the We Are the World event
Raspberry Beret Pop Life & America
w/Raspberry Berets best video of the year(or something like that) lol
I really don't know what could have been the next best single for Lovesexy I actually LOVE Positivity and next 2 When 2 R N Love it has the most clearly understood message

Because of the 'drastic' change in look & sound this is the album that should have been promoted the biggest, he didn't need a full concert just mini shows, videos for all the single and maybe even a B side pushed beyond releasing only 3 singles, this is the album that should have broke him out of any mold
