Songs to make you cry

To the fans,

Are there any Prince songs that have genuinely made you cry, for the right reasons, but in a most unusual way? I have just listened to Everytime, by Prince, and I really did not expect to be touched by the sentiment of the lyrics, but...

As you consider responding, it is perhaps worthwhile remembering that vulnerability and strength are often considered two sides of the same coin. On that note, I am looking forward to all your responses to this thread (in particular BartVanHemelen's).

love,

Spirit

Harlepolis

"Empty Room" from the celebration with Najee's flute drawing blood in the background.

A much hated one here, but his version of "One of Us" puts a sore fat lump in my throat.

Harlepolis,

WOW! You've just made me revisit One of Use. I had neglected this little treasure of a cover, but yes, you are spot on, especially being followed by The Love We Make.

Is that Empty Room version from a bootleg and, if so, can you remember which one?

Spirit

And now that I think about it, another one that got me a long time ago, in a completely unexpected fashion, was The Grand Progression.

His vocals.

I'm still trying to aquire it, but I think it can be found in Sabotage's Xenophobia Vol. I or II. The song was shared to me in a CD(among other stuff) by a much beloved orger that doesn't post here anymore.

Track it down, he gave an emotional speech prior to performing the song. It was my first time hearing it, I later came to find out the flute was a rare element in the song given that it was usually performed with guitar.

purplepolitician,

Possibly one of my all time favourite Prince compositions. I absolutely LOVE 8!

And yes, without fail, I find that this song takes me to that deeper soulful place. I love the opening vocals and the interplay of the music throughout.

Thank you for the reminder.

musicology54,

I Hate U. Really?

I really love the richness of the vocals, the live instrumentation and production quality, in particular, the feel of the keyboards and the guitar, not to mention the court scene vocals and the extended remix, but I don't recall the song touching, at least not in a tear-inducing way. Of course, it is unique what moves each of us at different points in our lives.

What is it in particular about the song, or the lyrics, that reaches you?

love,

Spirit

The usual. A Lover cheating on me and left. For some reason I still loved her. The guitar describes my pain at that time.

Yeah probably the closest, "Until URE in My Arms Again" is pretty moving too when you learn it was written for his child

We're here, might as well get into it.

His current live rendition of Little Red Corvette had me snivelling. It is beautiful.
One of Us gets me as well as The Beautiful Ones. Also, The Cross. The latter is haunting. But the live Corvette when he keeps saying SLOW DOWN. Wow.

Just thought of a few more, "Sometimes it Snows in April", "I Love You But I Don't Trust U Anymore", "Nothing Compares 2 U", "Old Friends 4 Sale", Under The Cherry Moon". Parade era seems to be particularly deep.

Definitely Sometimes It Snows in April.

If I've had too much to drink Power Fantastic can do it. It's that mournful horn.

I haven't found a song that gets me more emotional than this one, ever!!

I agree with some of the ones others listed (Eye Hate U, The Love We Make, The Cross, Sometimes It Snows In April) but I'd also like to add Electric Intercourse (live from First Ave in 83') that song is not only haunting and sexy but also intense and gloomy...it makes me tear up a lot...lol

I'll list some more as well.... his cover of A Case Of U, If I Was Your Girlfriend (yes it makes me teary sometrimes, especially the version from the SOTT movie), Free, U're Gonna C Me (One Nite Alone...version), Open Book, 4 The Tears In Your Eyes, Power Fantastic, Sweet Baby, The Grand Progression, etc.

Future Soul Song.

I'm an atheist and dont believe in a soul/afterlife/spirit but that doesn't mean I'm not sensitive, emotional, and understand the need for comfort. The beauty of the imagery, joyousness of the lyrics, and sheer belief in this one moves me. I think the fact that it came out in 2010 when I was hitting 39 and the proper start of 2 year emotional meltdown or mid-life crisis, made a difference too.

If there was a paradise for me and those that I have lost and will lose, I'd want it to be like this...

Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.
