Is this performance legendary?

I know there's a clip of doing "Just My Imagination" out there, which is great, but OF4S usually makes (great) threads about significant, memorable, historic eras/performances, so I'm wondering what this one was known for, if anything.

Thanks

I think this show, was 1 of the 1st that gave us a peak into the mystery of Princes aftershows, especially at the time 91(?) stuff wasn't so accessible (no internet) and seeing pieces of that performance and him singing Happy Birthday 2 Cat, It's a good show too-I've heard

OK, thanks. Now I get it - it was the aftershow that kind of began the legend of his amazing aftershows, and is the "holy grail" of all aftershows.

No. Aftershows began in 1986.

I heart the fact that Mick and the rest of The Stones heart Prince. Since they saw him at The Ritz back in 1980. They were really behind him and helped launch him into the mainstream, even though "that" audience wasn't ready for him. (L.A. Colisium Disaster)

Thanks DGer. No aftershows before '86? Do you know which/when was the first?

Anyway, I didn't mean it was the beginning of aftershows; ^^ I meant that this one became well-known, kind of high-profile with big name guests, which began the reputation for his aftershows being "must-see" and "legendary."

I think one of the first (if not THE first) aftershows as we know them was at Busby's in London on the morning of 13th August '86.

As for the Camden gig. I guess it was the first time that many of the public had seen footage of such a show, like a glimpse into the magic. I'm sure there were stars that attended the Parade aftershows though. I have personally never really heard of the Camden gig being given legendary status as such, I think that that kind of praise was piled upon the gig after Camden at Paard Vaan Troje in Holland (the Small Club show).

Just my opinion. wink

Omg DG probably in all the years of this being talked about this Camden palace aftershow from someone who was actually there your the only one I've heard saying at as it is. You hit the nail on the head with it.

From someone that was there I don’t have many memories of it, a few but not loads like people expect.

I had some mod years ago grilling me for details in emails about the gig, I couldn’t even remember the date of it much less remember the setlist. I had to dig out my Wembley tix to see if I was there myself! lol

I remember things like when he came out of the car and walking in, I stood quite bit behind him thinking wow hes tiny and being totally in awe of him, I was only a teenager. Remember trying to get in, couldn’t, then listening to the gig by the stage door, then half way through they let me and my friend and others in. There wasn’t that many people waiting outside as people would think from them pics.

Squeeze myself a bit to the front of the audience and was gobsmacked by it all just stood there all through the gig with my jaw on floor! then remembering i had the Black album in my handbag getting paranoid thinking was gonna get caught with it! lol

I thought because I was only a teenager then and just thru age I couldn’t remember and also I was such in awe of Prince at that time it was blur and surreal for me at the time. But thats not the case. I didn’t think it was legendary at the time we was just hoping he would turn up. We thought this was like a normal thing he did. And seeing popstars at a gig meant nothing in the UK especially in London.

The first time I had recollection of it being this big aftershow was when it was on the Prince omnibus documentary and there it was- footage of it. I was like I was there, wow they/he have actually recorded it!

If I had know it was gonna be talked so much about in future decades I would have taken mega loads of pics and recorded that shit myself lol

There weren't any aftershows on the Purple Rain tour. A few afternoon gigs, but no show after a regular scheduled concert.

The footage wasn't shown until much later.

I'm pretty sure the Camden aftershow was talked about in the press back in 1988, IIRC it was even mentioned in Smash Hits. Yes, pop mag supreme Smash Hits regularly mentioned Prince, had ads for his records and even reviewed The Black Album at the time. Around Lovesexy it had a two page spread on "Why Prince Is Bonkers" or something like that.

Also, Mica Paris had just had a major hit and was in the audience at the Camden gig (she gets handed the mike by Prince in one of the clips), which also helped publicize it.

I also recall a Dutch DJ talking about the Paard Van Troje/Trojan Horse aftershow on the radio (probably Rob Stenders). But then again Prince was a huge deal in the Netherlands, Dutch music mag Oor spent 6 or 8 pages in their holiday issue in 1988 talking about the debut of Lovesexy Live in Paris, the Sign O' The Times movie,... And Vara radio spent an entire day on Prince in the summer of 1988, labeling it "Prince Day", and playing at least a track or two each hour plus some live recordings from SOTT (probably a boot from the movie's soundtrack). And late at night they spent an hour playing most of the B-Sides (I taped it from the radio and played it over and over again).

But not everyone was into Prince back then like people are lead to believe, he was popular but there was a lot of people that didn't get him also. If it had been MJ there the place would of been a mayhem with fans and press. Prince was popular through media and was seen as a serious musican but he wasn't everyones taste. Seeing a feminine looking black man running around in high heels wasn't everyones cuppa tea, he definitely was an acquired taste.
