Do you think Prince has Quit? Prince is Awesome! However it seems in last 10 years he has kinda mailed it in as far as his albums because I think he has lost his motivation to be good. He tours now constantly doing the hits but I think he is frustrated with himself because he seems to be caught in time machine(1970's) and music has passed him by. He can't sell any albums or songs now so he knows he has to tour constantly to make money.I just don't see fire in his eyes no more! its like I'm the greatest and I have nothing to prove which is sad!Do you think Prince has Quit on himself as an artist?

Yes kind of sad but he is mostly retired at this point. He just tours and plays his old songs to make some $. He doesnt' have anything new to say artistically it seems. But he is older and happens to everyone eventually (unless they die young)

Prince could easily attach album sales to ticket sales like he did in Musicology and have at least certified gold albums for the rest of his life, not to mention making the lion's share of the sales.
But, I don't think the rationales that I've read and heard so far with regards to why he's not been releasing material are at all satisfactory. Something else is going on, and I can't put my finger on it.
I do think some of his previous releases are ones in which he probably wanted larger hits--I mean, lotusflow3r was heavily promoted at the beginning, complete with the release of not one....but four songs to a radio program months before release. He also performed on Ellen, etc. and did interviews to promote it.
But, it takes real arrogance to set up that dreadful lotusflow3r.com website, charge what he charged, and then turn around and deliver crap when sales weren't what he expected.
I don't know what his current motivations are, but I don't think he's retired, and I don't think what any of the theories for why he's holding back actually make much sense. But, I've learned long ago not to try to figure him out. He'll definately release stuff--I just won't be assured anymore that it is yearly, like the material in his younger years....that mentranom has long stopped ticking.

Prince is small and so is dynamite...
but his music, his "dynamite" has become wet,
I miss:
the sound......... and the rhythms,
Prince doing something wild and challeging, something interesting again on record.... instead of playing safe middle on the road...
something fresh with energy and power.
Maybe Prince is just too old now,
maybe he's f*cked up with religious dogma.
Not inspired musically anymore....
I wish he would come back and show the whole world that he is still capable of.. doing something raw, fresh, wild, sexxy....
He should forget about getting a BIG pay check from a record company, and take less, just doing some real music again, show his fans what he is all about. Prince 4Ever.

Can't agree with you more Kid...
He's been playing the same songs since 2004...
The records are stale and meaningless almost - I really believe the religious stuff he got into left him really lost.
There are songs that are still wonderful to me but as far as whole albums are concerned, he's gone wayward with that.
He needs a producer or a collaborator that challenges his 40 years of knowledge. Someone who pushes him again - the guy is absolutely bored.
However, I saw him in a small venue last year or so and he slayed - the arena shows he did shortly after were boring in comparison.

Nope, not at all. I consider Lotus Flow3r(Not MPLSound or Elixer), 3121, and 20Ten to be fine albums by any over 50 artist ever. The charts are not filled with over 50 Mega Stars. The charts barely have too many artists over 35.
Now Prince live is another matter. Hearing Shelby yelling "Put Your Hands Up," and getting a half baked concert can be frustrating knowing how talented Prince is, but at least 2002's ONA tour, and 2004's Musicology tour were awesome.
Considering what Prince has accomplished, and what a huge back catalog he has, I can hope, but will not expect much more from him anyway. Anything he gives us is a bonus.
I will bitch about his sub par going through the motions live performances, but at the end of the day, I'll take what I can get, and I have received much more from him than I could have dreamed of back in 1984.

Why is being over 50 an excuse for putting out poor songs? Forget the charts and comparing him to others - it would be wonderful if he put out songs that were great. While every album has a couple, why not just take some time off between albums (like he's doing), record whatever moves him, and then compile a bunch of fantastic songs in the form of a record?
Here's hoping Prince comes to realize that at this point, he's damaged his catalogue in the past 12 years by releasing poo poo records.

Well this has been spoken about alot lately, and surprised it took so long to get it going. He did say on the LOPEZ TONIGHT show that he was gonna lay low, sit back take some time because the industry needed to get itself together. So over 3 years since a regular US release his longest stretch by far and honestly i think he is bored with how its done, not music, because seriously for all we know hes got 10 ablums ready of new music. This guy wont stop, as far as touring just on hits, well sorry folks but he has been doing that kind of tour since Musicology, the last original music tour was ONE NITE ALONE, where i felt he was revived after the lackluster RAVE album. I doubt the man has stopped though if he has PROPS to him for not announcing the END like everyone else does every other week for attention "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

He's probably written around 4,000 songs in his life, if not more. My second favorite artist, U2, has probably written around 500 or less, and they are four guys. You can only be so creative. He has potential to put out more great songs, and anybody who thinks Dreamer, Fury, Future Soul Song, A Million Days, etc...are not top notch songs for any age, well, then you expect too much.
I have been bombarded with people on this site telling me that his albums since 1995 or so have been total crap, and the same people will tell you with a straight face that Shelby shouting and screaming between Prince doing cover songs is some kind of over the top brilliant live performance.
The bottom line is...it's all opinion, but most of us know Prince could take the easy way out and simply release vault songs for his next 20 albums and probably have some pretty good albums. Prince doesn't do what we think he should, or what seems logical, but I can live with his studio output easily.

You joined the ORG 5 days ago and this was all you could come up with? Another "He's lost it, he ain't funky no more!" thread. You should've waited another day. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I think that because he is Prince and because he has done and accomplished so much in the past that his fans have extremely high expectations for him and what he should be doing now and in the future and when musically he is not meeting their expectations (at least in their opinion) they get disappointed and fustrated with him and they start to lose faith in his abilities as an artist.
I'm a fairly new fan so I'm just getting to know Prince and all of his music and for me it's exciting, he's exciting because there is so much material I haven't heard before or seen before and it's like being a kid in a candy store. Right now I'm working my way through his early 90's albums.
But no, I don't think P will ever 'quit' creating music or ever get tired and lose his zeal and ambition and energy for it. He might get tired with the way things are run but music itself, probably never. Losing his motivation and confidence, I think is highly doubtful. ~ You're a desire, I get higher every time I speak your name ~

I'm glad he did all his old and new songs on the current tour, it's a great way to leave. I'm not being mean. But a day before I heard about Welcome to Canada (it was the announcement day but I was not informed) I told my friend from college that we'll go see him if he does a hits tour cause he's a huge fan of his too, and sure enough, I reached home and heard the news, feeling so ecstatic and hyper! And we got great seats too! It was around his birthday, and I couldn't afford to pay for his ticket, but made up for it with a bio about Prince I found in a store as well as a gag gift I knew he'd love, it was a fun night We were going to go to the afterparty but didn't in the end.

You know I've had this conversation many times with bf with these things you've posted. After many debates the other half mention to me recently saying-
Prince could be doing this on purpose-intentionally trying to detract himself from the industry slowly reeling himself out, not from his own choice mind you.
Because his recent actions are bizarre especially with episodes of the lotusflower website and its contents, his detachment from the web where he was one of the pioneers, it’s like he’s pulling away on purpose. How the last few albums have been released and the type of music he has created etc is odd. He knows more than most on how to make a hit and cutting edge music. The repetition of the hits concerts its like hes programmed.
Maybe he does want out of the industry but is not able to just leave because of reason unbeknownst to us, like for all we know he could be being getting threatened /legally pushed, making him want out of the industry.
I’ve really never looked at it like that before. But who knows for sure but I think it could be plausible. Or hes just mad as a box of frogs
