Planet Earth was amazing though. [Edited 8/8/12 14:38pm]

Because it's so vanilla.
Saying that there are threads on here where people talk about songs and I often have to go to iTunes to listen to them because I don't recall them. And sometimes I have no idea which album a song is on! My excuse is that I buy a lot of music each month and remembering all of the songs/albums is nigh on impossible for me. I listen to the music, I leave the details to the nerds
Back to the thread I do recall Mr Goodnight due to it's blandness. Prince by numbers. Bit boring but okay if you just want background music as opposed to listening with headphones.

And we take the piss out of chav couples for having matching shell suits. It's an odd world. [Edited 8/8/12 6:30am]

Well, there's no denying that it sounds like something current from some of these other artists of the last 15 to 20 years. The descriptions of the song from people who like it in this very thread are proof of that. I keep stations that play current music off my dial so I don't have to hear it and when I buy a Prince album, I buy it to escape the bullshit of the last 20 years, not to hear more of it and even worse, have my money being spent on something I can't stand. Andy is a four letter word.

thebanishedone said: Mr Goodnight -if that song was released by the Isley Brothers it would have been praised.yet, here on org many fans hate it.The song itself have a great bass line ,his speaking-rappin is not forced,it sounds relexad and cool.I like the break down when he says We can shackala... And girl voices are cool. I tend to agree with this. Prince raps can be pretty bad (Incense And Candles), just as often as they can be pretty good (Irresistable Bitch). This is one of the better ones. It's charming. Not try-hard at all. And the chorus is nice and breezy. Idk why people hate it. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

.... wait. you mean some people love it and others hate it? hmmmmm must mean that we all have different tastes in his millions of songs, lol.... go figure!
i guess i'm on the team who loves it... what's the score? the song makes me feel good and it's got style... in my op.

It's alright. It's no masterpiece, but it's a nice enough way to spend five minutes. Reminds me of Player, which is another song I like for what it is.
blah blah blah | |

Well I dont know what version of Insence u were listening 2...but atleast the rap on that song is passable.......Mr goodnight sounds so shit even in Rappers Delight standards....it makes me cringe.........

I just hate that rapid-fire flow he tries to cop in Incense. He ain't Twista, and his shit sounds jumbled. Plus that bit about him being "blind as a cat in the dark" and smothering her with something shiny, and something about the price of his candle...IDK WTF he's talking about but I do know it's not attractive.
For me, the skipper on Planet Earth isn't Mr. Goodnight, it's All The Midnights. As soon as hear, "Beeeecauuuse I turned my..." I'm checkin for the skip button. Maybe the most annoying opening of a song ever and for all time. IDK if it's the dissonance of the chords of just his voice or what but it's like nails on a chalkboard to me. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

I agree with All The Midnights. But then again he has done a lot of bad music over the years. By bad I mean lacking in harmony, melody, tunefulness, that kinda thing. More so on Planet Earth mind you There truly are some awful songs on that album.
I don't know, I just wish I was more easily pleased...

All the Midnights is actually one of my favorite Prince songs post-WB. Go figure. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I don't feel any hate for this track - there is always the cognitive dissonance that stems from calling an album Planet Earth and then have some toss outlet like The Guardian think that it's an 'environmental record' and then have Mr Goodnight espousing the virtues of Lear Jets. But apart from that it's great.
Also, River Island has got a sale on.

I just gave it another chance because I respect your opinion, and I can understand someone being charmed by it. I think it's his vocal performance that's grates on me though. It seems out of his range or something. I'm hearing strain. It's not just this song though. Lion Of Judah has the same problem for me, but other elements of the song save it for me.
You keep All The Midnights, I'll keep Arms Of Orion "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."
