Prince's NEW religion(s)

Dear Prince.org,

Please post lyrics that feel relevant to you in terms of your interpretation of Prince's evolving religious/spiritual journey.

"History is full of praise for another's history

More and more than the one that became before both u and me

Left alone with our devices, whatever will be will be
A brand new story in the making...

...beginning endlessly"

Thus, using Beginning Endlessly, as but one example, which philosophies do Prince's recent lyrics point towards in terms of his religious/spiritual development?

love,

Spirit

I had a dream last night
That I was flying for the first time
And in the dream I could pilot my flight
With the thoughts in my mind

Since there wasn't any up or down
Everybody was all around
When we sang, we all sang together
Oh, what a beautiful sound

Ooh, ooh, sha la la la la
This is the future soul song
Ooh, ooh, sha la la la la
This is the future soul song

I had a dream last night
That I was singing and the sound of my voice
Seemed to come from every mountain top
Like it had no choice

And when my voice rose, so did the sun
When the trees sang the harmony as one
Every living soul sang the most beautiful
Melody ever sung

Ooh, ooh, sha la la la la
This is the future soul song
Ooh, ooh, sha la la la la
This is the future soul song

We are all love and light and "god" is within all of us - when we die we all merge together singing along with Prince!

Yeah sounds good to me - I relate to this song as I have had similar dreams, to me it is all about being at one with everything, as in a state of meditation, reunited back with each other and ourselves, it is the future soul song we sing when we pass over.

Haha, Keithy!

What is the religion/philosophy according to Star Wars? I assume it has something to do with "the forces". Indeed, Prince does still seem to be attracted to the idea of what might be called 'the forces' in Star Wars vernacular; reconciling and overcoming the dark side of the force. It's often simple to conclude who represents 'the dark side' of the force in Prince's universe, at various stages of his work/life e.g. the record industry / Warner Brothers, at one stage, although he has softened his approach towards it/them in recent years, it would appear in order to master the forces himself.

Spirit

It seems as if Prince has used songs to deliver his religious views, spiritual views throughout his career. At times, it seems that the religion fit the needs of his personal views. Now, with his religion, it seems as if he has found one that suits him best. I can feel it in all of his songs.. even if he doesn't mention anything by name or scripture. It is beautiful, and I don't need to hear his views of this or that to appreciate another human beings love for all things under a spiritual being. It seems to flow through his fingertips and drip from his tongue... incredible genius. I know this doesn't answer your question or contribute much, just my honest opinion smile.

Desperate is the day that is 2morrow
4 those who do not know the time has come
2 whip the dogs that beg, steal or borrow
From the table God set 4 His Son

Wicked is the witch that stands 4 nothing
All the while watching 2 see U fall
Deeper than the ditch that bred your suffering
The one being dug right now by them all

Happy is the way 2 meet your burdens
No matter how heavy or dark the day
Pity on those with no hope 4 2morrow
It's never as bad as it seems until we say

Precious is the baby with a mother
That tells him that his Saviour is coming soon
All that believe will cleanse and purify themselves
Put down the needle, put down the spoon

Sacred is the prayer that asks 4 nothing, oh
While seeking 2 give thanks 4 every breath we take, oh
Blessed are we inside this prayer
4 in the new world, we will be there

The only love there is, is the love we make

When I heard these lyrics for the first time I had to sit back and wonder what it was because I wasn't raised Christian and I had to ask a family member what it was:

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever
Controversy Controversy Controversy Controversy
Love Him, Love Him baby

Hi Spirit,

Nice thread.

Future soul song sounds like it supports New Age Spiritualism because of the idea of being able to 'pilot one's thoughts.'

In Compassion, ' in the high seated lawlessness no love can found' speaks of humans needing the greater spirit for without it 'nature will rise against nature' and compassion leans I suppose towards all religions.

In Lavaux, if we interpret spiritual joy and happiness in the line 'The only way to win this game is
To let everybody play and share the ball' would sound again like it could mean all religions.

Act of God - 'Funny how nobody's holy books are the same, Everybody's God got a different name, the day that's it over is the end of the game and they call it an Act of God.' Well most religions all follow the same virtues but the names are Allah, Christ, Buddha, Krishna, Jehova etc.... If they came together it could be called an act of God, or is the mean ambiguious saying, our human distinction between 'our' gods is justified by our saying 'act of God.'

Sea of everything although a love ballad could also be ambiguous with a layered spiritual undertone. 'will you wander the wildnerness, searching for a king or will u settle for a Prince and the sea ......' Meaning, as humans will you search endlessly for God or will you settle for Jesus perhaps, therefore Christian in tone. Same can be said about 'walk in sand' totally romantic in nature, but if you took a few lines out of context 'the spirtiual path' can also be seen as walking hand in hand with God. But that's probably reading too much into it.
Lay me down & Everybody loves me, can't really find anything there except for the Force aspect which is open I think to all religions.
Lotusflower, I'd have to say has a Buddhist shade. From the lotus, back to the lotus, this cyclical process of to and from life. Boom - 'what if another universe' well Prince is definitely being open minded here to other possiblities. In 4ever, 'eternity is just one step away' perhaps the recognition of the step from one life to another? 'The afterlife/world' he's spoken about before? And Colonised Mind addressing Darwin's evolution theory, yet coupling it with modern technology and 'no responsilbity' perhaps emphasising human's desire to ignore a creator for our convenience.
All interesting stuff. Love discussing Prince's lyrics! Great thread.
Diagnosis: Prince doesn't seem to be that fixed in JW anymore. Or at least, he's more open to other religions.

I've read a few books about Near Death Experiences and "Future Soul Song" reminds me of a lot of people's personal accounts of heaven. For instance, several people have described floating or flying and being able to see in every direction at once. Some people have also described angels singing God's praises and they almost always say it was the most beautiful music they've ever heard. I believe Prince titled the song as such because he feels that this is what awaits us (or our "soul" to be more specific) on the other side.

Wonderfully delivered!!! smile

I enjoy these threads as well! I say like you as well, Prince doesn't seemed fixed in 'JW Doctrine' as much; he always holds into monthesism, which never fails in showing in his lyrics. YOU really took everything I would say about 20Ten! So I can't follow up on that! I guess I can only end this talking about 'The Word'.

"

What is this new exaltation
That I just can't explain?
What r these new inspirations
That I can't get outta my brain?
How am I gonna sleep with this feeling
Rushing all through my veins?
Get up, come on let's do something
Don't U wanna go get saved?

The night is calling U 2 act
Act upon every urge
U can't get no satisfaction
If U ain't got the courage
I don't know what U're afraid of
I don't know what U've heard
Get up, come on let's do something
Don't U wanna know the word?

CHORUS:
Who's gonna save us when them spiders get next 2 U?
Spinning their sticky webs around what U do?
(We gotta) safeguard against forked tongue and the treachery of the wicked 1
Get up, come on let's do something

Don't matter how far U have 2
The truth has got 2 be told
Don't matter how shiny your lips
They'll never be streets of gold
They might try 2 get us crazy
Cuz they don't know what I've heard
We got this new exaltation
I'm talking about the word

CHORUS
(Next 2 U, next 2 U)
(What U do, yeah)
(Forked tongue)
(Wicked 1)

Get up, come on let's do something
No reason 2 feel this pain
Get up, come on let's do something
Come on, go, let's get saved
{repeat}

Get up, come on let's do something {x4}
Don't U wanna hear the word?"

I can be a contradiction
Cuz that is all I see
But I am the universe
And the universe is me

I am the one song (Ah yes)

All things come from this one song (Yes they do, uh)
The garden and the tree
If everything, everything is present
What is will always be
This here is the first and the last song
And all that come between

When language falls like a wounded soldier
And it's covered by the sea
All the sadness
All these unanswered questions
Keep me company
Company, company, company, come 2 me, come 2 me please
Here at the center of it all
(I know) I know that U can only come from me

(I am the universe)
Yes it will, oh, yes it will (The sun, the moon and sea)
Where else is it gonna come from but me? (I am the universe)

What a fantastic song!!! Just one of the greatest personal songs he really executed in his singing! smile

The spoken word part is also nice to hear; I think One song summarizes what Prince believes even now. Even as they contradict some of JW's beliefs...This One Song characterizes all Prince is about.

It seems as if he was crying when he recorded this; so much passion and honesty in how he deliveries these vocals!!

Now I am about to jam to it!! headbang headbang

You do realize that most of that track is about trying to get in some woman's pants, and not Prince's religious practices...right?

It's weird to me anyways when fans are preoccupied with what Prince does or doesn't believe in in his private life anyway. shrug

Analyst,

Do you realise that most of Prince's work can be thought of as being about love, in all its guises?

It is not too great a leap to replace the word 'love' with your interpretation of choice e.g. God.

What is the religion/philosophy according to Star Wars? I assume it has something to do with "the forces". Indeed, Prince does still seem to be attracted to the idea of what might be called 'the forces' in Star Wars vernacular; reconciling and overcoming the dark side of the force. It's often simple to conclude who represents 'the dark side' of the force in Prince's universe, at various stages of his work/life e.g. the record industry / Warner Brothers, at one stage, although he has softened his approach towards it/them in recent years, it would appear in order to master the forces himself.

falloff and falloff

databank,

Make light of Star Wars/Prince/Spirit, you are? Strong, the force in you, is, databank, but master the dark side, within, must you.

BigBen,

I agree, it's genius.
