I think Computer Blue is probably THE ONLY song I can think of that I wouldn´t want to hear live again because I like the 1983-1985 renditions so much and I simply can´t even imagine him doing it any justice today. It´s one of those songs that have a very raw feel and energy and urgency, and I simply can´t see him do that song with his current line-up or current state of mind. I´d love to see him prove me wrong but if most of the other remakes are any indication of what he might do with this one, I ´d rather not hear it.
Then again, I love what he´s done with Little Red Corvette and Something In The Water over the past decades and I usually love when he revisits an old song. Prince is usually a genius as far as re-arranging his old songs is concerned but there have been attempts that were less pleasant to the ear (1999 TNM, The Christ, Spirituality, etc. etc. ).
I´d love to hear a collabo with the Foo Fighters though. Now that would be interesting.
But revisiting Computer Blue with the current band?
Only if they all go back to eating Doritos and recording in some old warehouse in Eden Prairie. Otherwise he´ll never be able to recreate that old sound and urge.
Naaaaah.
Besides, that whole computer thing does sound a bit dated in this day and age. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I agree
I forgot about the Christ & Spirituality
we would have to know fully who/what Computer Blue is first to say its dated, is the computer a reference to people in general? I guess "Poor little computer...we are computers too" especially now when everything is hooked up to a computer and everyone has a computer vs in 1984/84 when there were no cell phones laptops cars run by computers computers everywhere no
I don't think it would sound dated, cause I think Computer Blue is something more Something in the Water Does Not Compute is similar

I always took it as a metaphor for becoming a bit cold and robotic due to the disappointments in the protagonist´s love life. Or maybe it was just a phase Prince was going through back then because of the cold and robotic sound of some of the songs on 1999 ( Something In The Water, All The Critics Love U In New York, that whole Electro Funk thing back then...). Also, the computer motif could be found in many other songs of that era, like ZAPP´s Computer Love, or Ready For The World´s Digital Display, and so on.
Or maybe it was meant to express that love is an emotion that does not follow rationality and rules, hence the disappointments and loneliness of the "poor lonely computer".
I don´t know, really. I like your ideas though. And I think a quick learner like Prince, who has always been up to date technology-wise, has also always incorporated the latest technological trends into his songs, which bears the risk of sounding dated real soon ( "...in this digital age you could just page me.." , and there are many more examples), but then again, he has always been very up to date and sometimes even too far ahead of his time.
Think of the Beautiful Experience.....I know many people who hate the little storyline in it but I found it brilliant, much better than SOTT in some aspects ( real live footage, better "storyline" etc.) and it was a glimpse into the future, of things that would be a reality not in 1994 but much later ( internet addiction, loneliness, watching stuff on the internet instead of experiencing live shows, meeting people online, cocooning in the safety of your own home and comfort zone, downloading stuff etc. etc.) . Prince was on some NEXT shit when he did the Beautiful Experience. Computers, it seems , have always been part of his music. There are many songs where he mentions computers.

Beautiful Experience better than SOTT? I can't disagree more. It was just a bunch of damn remixes in the single, and the concert had some nice points, but too many cover songs, and Prince not really singing complete songs. Other than It's Gonna Be a Long Boring Night, SOTT was almost perfect in every way.

I meant the overall execution as a film as far as storyline is concerned and the fact that the Beautiful Experience contained real live version instead of lip-synched performances. Of course I prefer SOTT over the Beautiful Experience but still......the Beautiful Experience, despite its flaws, was, in my opinion, a great effort compared to other, rather lacklustre mini films he did. I liked it for what it was or what it still is. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! It's too tempting to keep going straight into Darling Nikki, and he don't play that song no more, that's why no Computer Blue.

I consider it a sign of respect to the Revolution that he doesn't try to play it without them.

hell when is the last time he played the full version of Let's Go Crazy? "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

You are changing the subject. 1988 or later? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Oh and for the record I don't like Purple and Gold either. Just because I say he's a genius doesn't mean I like everything he does without question. Far from it. There have been many things he's done that I haven't liked. But I try not to focus on them. No point. I am just saying he is a genius and I would like to hear a new version of that track. It wouldn't detract at all from the original anymore than seeing him play the slowed blues version of ICNTTPOYM or Little Red Corvette/Slow down... I saw him play those both recently and they were different takes and didn't kill the memories of the originals in any way. The originals still sound the same ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What the hell is wrong with the current batch of orgers so strongly disliking "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night"?
One of the most amazing pieces of music he has done during his career.

One of the most amazing pieces of music he has done during his career. I've been an Orger since 1999 and a Prince fan long before that. I dislike It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. It's sloppy, pointless, and annoying. It's filler, at best. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I feel like Computer Blue is one of the quintessential Revolution songs. If they aren't there to perform it with him, or at LEAST Wendy and Lisa, then I don't really want to hear it.
"Shelby?"
"Yes, Elisa."
"Is the water warm enough?"
CAN YOU IMAGINE?! "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

don't diss on of my faves...have always loved Beautiful Night and always will...
As for Computer Blue, since I have not seen him live in so long (being in that small out of the way city of Chicago!) I don't really care if he plays it live. I just want that awesome long hallway version in crystal pristine condition along with the version from that First Ave show back in 83. [Edited 8/7/12 9:49am]

Yes, that's what I think too, considering that the music is composed by them (or not?) "The public is wonderfully tolerant. It forgives everything except genius." O.Wilde
