the first wtf/why? moment of his career, but at least it was a noble/honest/focused album
The Ladder is the low point, a blatant PR sequel
and he should have included She's Always in My Hair [Edited 8/2/12 11:52am]

I love every song on it but I think the first side far outshines the second half in terms of a cohesive sound. I wish the whole hippie, psychedelic thing had been carried across the whole record.

Has definitely grown on me lately. The first three tracks are magical and sound nothing like anything that came before, the classic hits Raspberry Beret and Pop Life. The Hieronmymous Bosch painting set to music (Peach and Black Podcast reference) called Temptation and the Ladder. Only Tambourine and America seem like average songs and even these are great in their own way. Cover is amazing for the period. I have the 12 inch of America and a 7 inch of Pop life (Not a big fan of 21 minutes of America though).
My score 85/100 - Very good, a solid A album, but still the lowest ranked of the 5 golden albums (1999, Purple Rain, This, Parade, Sign) Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Temptation just DRAGS. I'm not big on The Ladder either. But the rest of the album is stellar. Especially Condition of the Heart. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Temptation is a hell of song, it's pure Spinal Tap, and I love it for that
"You have 2 want her 4 the right reasons"
"I dooo !...!
"U Don't, Now DIE!"
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOarrrrgggg....."
"Let me go, let me go.

AMAZING ALBUM - LOVED IT IN 1985 WHEN I WAS JUST 13 YEARS OLD AND LOVE IT TODAY, SO BRAVE OF PRINCE TO FOLLOW PURPLE RAIN WITH THIS, GENIUS !!

It did not take long for me to LOVE this album! It really takes me places. I love the sound and the way his guitar sounded here! I appreciate it a bit more than Purple Rain. I am always mindblown that the same guy who performed a song like Computer Blue did something as sweet as Condition Of The Heart. LOL
It's a wonderful piece of work that really displays the genius and skill of Prince. I think it will be appreciated a bit more for this album in the coming years! It NEVER fails at bringing the funk and rock!
He went somewhere BOLD here, and I think it was a smart and personal. He did what he wanted, and he did it well!
I love everything about it, 'Temptation' had me really laughing at the end...The ending is one of the most perfect endings ever in his catalog!! LOL 100/100!!! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

I love the soul of the Ladder, i 2 used to feel it was the ATWIAD's Purple Rain, but for some reason it reminds me of Free
This was an album that had even more potential, I mean the songs told stories of the artwork, It seems like there could be a song rel or not for each character on that album cover, even the kid flying across the scene with the balloon and I still get lost in that inner painting
the fonts and the colors the paisley writing
the France mini concert the carnivalesque secret concert in June/July this album just should have been promoed but not from the big concert way like PR but special shows
I can picture videos for each song: I can see Tamborine with just Prince(finger cymbals) BrownMark(bass) Bobby Z(drums) Brad Marsh(tamborine) all in black dark makeup and touches of black n white cartoon like images of Vanity all sexy or some other woman
Tamborine is the Tick Tick Band of Around the World in a Day. He always has to have a masturbatory song
| |

ohh Tambourine is very freaky, it doesn't take up a lot of space and it gives us that wild porno Prince but covered in sounds and colorful languange
If u have Tick Tick Bang(81) play those 2 songs back to back
America i love 4 the rock, not enough for me lol
I always wonder what other songs where possible inclusions outside of the B sides I wonder if Roadhouse Garden would have fit on this album
What album is THIS??

Co sign that!
But u could add the "Shikaa!!!" after the scream Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

The artwork definitely adds a lot to the album's mood! I like how the look carried over pretty consistently in the singles too. Prince was also bold/brave to not include his photo on any of the covers.

I have 2 admit, the first time I put this album on at a friends house, I was a bit dissapointed. We just came from the record store and my friend made some bad remarks when I put the needle on each song for a few seconds "what the f*** is that?? U like this music?" So at first I only liked Paisley Park, Raspberry b, Pop Life and America..songs that sounded like the Prince I knew from 1999 and PR
But then the singles and 12" came...what a treat!!! Pop life extenden, Girl, She´s always... AND Hello extended!!!! Title song and Condition of the heart also became fav´s...
It was a risk 2 release this album after PR...everybody talked about it and even I didn´t understand it...looking back it was great he didn´t release PRII! (allthough I wonder what would have happened if he would have released Erotic City, 17 days, others and the singles from ATWIAD on a follow up ) Love4oneanother

Condition of the Heart
ROCK & SOUL * APRIL 1986 THE PRINCE INTERVIEW By Michael Shore Under the Cherry Moon is a love story, set in the 1940s and shot in black and white. Word from the set has it that the plot is more or less spelled out in the lyrics to "Condition of the Heart" on Around the World in a Day, which appears to be about a musician falling in love with a woman too rich and worldly for his own lifestyle.
There was a girl in Paris
Initial tracking took place on 9 October, 1984 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (the day after Yes).

I only just noticed that there's a nipple in the background of the album cover!! I must be really unobservant.
I even got the lyrics to Condition Of The Heart wrong in my head..here's what I thought he sang.. (doh!)
There was a girl in Paris Whom he sent a letter 2 Hoping she would answer back Now wasn't that a fool Hardy notion for the part of No lead musician Acting on a whim is only good 4 a condition of the heart
There was a dame from London Who insisted that he love her Then left him 4 a real prince Purple Rain, now isn't that A shame that sometimes money Buys U everything and nothing Love, it only seems 2 buy a Terminal condition of the heart
Thinking about U driving me crazy My friends all say it's just a phase, but oh they're wrong.. Every day is the other day I'm blinded by the daisies in your yard
There was a woman from the ghetto Who made funny faces just like Clara Bow, how was I 2 know That she would wear the same Cologne as U and U But U do? Whenever I would act a fool, the fool With a condition of the heart Thinking about U driving me crazy My friends all say it's just a phase, but they're wrong (yeah..)
Every single day is the other day I'm blinded by the daisies in your yard There was a girl (There was a girl in Paris) whom he sent a letter to... (Whom he sent a letter 2) (Hoping she would answer back) She never answered back enough (wasn't that a foolhardy) He's got a condition of the heart. (notion ...) The Ladder?
I love every track on ATWIAD, incl The Ladder.
Prince played The Ladder live in 2002 in Copenhagen, IIRC.
a wonderful moment, I was there in Falconer salen.
I love The Ladder deeply.
(Also a very excellent live take in "A Musical Portrait", the Prince-documentary from 1989)

Around the World in A Day Recorded at Paisley Park by Susan Rogers & David Leonard
The track was first written and recorded by David Coleman (Lisa Coleman's brother) in June, 1984, when given two days of studio time as a birthday gift from Prince. When Prince heard the resulting track, he loved it and wanted to include it on his next album. He re-recorded the track and made some musical and lyrical changes. Basic tracks for Prince's version were recorded on 16 September, 1984 at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA.

I wonder what you mean, "it sucks"
are you talking about the lyrics cuz it sure can't be the fantastic music..
The Ladder is a GREAT song just like the rest of the album..
Go watch the tv documantary "A Musical Portrait", just before the end credits Prince is playing that very mooving live version of The Ladder - on piano alone.
If you don't like that version of the song, I am afraid something is wrong with you, it so very beautiful...

I'd give my right testicle to hear the rest of that performance...when the horns kick in it fades away, and that's just when it was getting awesome!!
Somewhere, there's a tin sitting with all of that footage. For the love of everything holy, someone please steal it. "I'm much too hot to be cool"

It's not just the lyrics or the music. It's both. The lyrics tell a dumb story, even though I like their intention. The music is just a less interesting re-tread of Purple Rain that plods along boringly doing the same thing from beginning to end with no drama or tension, nothing to change it up and make you notice it.
the whole song just lays there and tempts you to turn off the album. it's a big bore.

b4 i go starting a debate thread, is it me or in the bassline version towards the end is backward messaging done in this version? it's around towards the end of the song (vocal ad libs) man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Lol!! A newbie, Not likely, I was commenting on Scotman1999 post, I didn't click reply with post button which is why I put the two little upward pointing arrows in. I was a little shocked that he/she only mentioned a nipple, not the whole silhouette. Prince once tried 2 change his name 2 a symbol so that ur'e mother couldn't find him in the phonebook!
