If Prince wants to release his back catalog in physical format, and have people buy it, he doesn't have much time left in my opinion. The baby boomers are still buying CDs, but Prince's fan base is younger on average and most of us have ripped all our music to our computers.
I think the supposed vinyl renaissance is ending too. The last time I went to Best Buy, they had eliminated their vinyl section completely except for a dozen or so records, half of them Prince reissues. I bought the Prince stuff they had left, and when I checked out, the guy at the register told me he didn't even know they still sold vinyl. He did recognize what they are, however, since his grandfather owned some.
I think it would be interesting for him to do a deal with HDTracks like ABCKO did for the early Rolling Stones albums. Sell us everything in high-res downloads and get one step ahead of iTunes. Or he could start his own website, but we know how great he is at running those.
