Prince said once in an interview that he personally uses a PC, but at Paisley Park, they do all their designs on Macs (like CD artwork)

I've only heard of Prince using Macs. I believe they have powerbooks in the studio. A little bit of trivia, at one point, Apple was considering having Prince to do the startup sound for the PowerMacs - they eventually went a different route.

oh, and all of the computer talking in NPGMC audios and Familu Name is done on Macs. Family Name uses the Agnes voice in Apple's text to speech system.

During the Seattle soundcheck they were working on the graphics behind the stage, and they were using a Mac. The OS he uses in Graffiti Bridge is a Mac.

Macs are better. This is just one more bit of evidence. smile

He has PCs in his vids. He likes PCs but they do use Macs at Paisley. However they did get rid of allot of Macs and put in PCs because the website was better on them.
At the concert last year in Manchester, the guy on the mixing desk had a Mac to mix in the graphics on the backcloth.
There is a very long article on this and all the lighting and sound equipment used on the tour. Apparently it was famous among technicians around the world for having the best light and sound ever.

Hey now...watch it!

During the ONA tour, all the background images/movies were produced and projected using a Mac.

Anyway, while I would personally never sentence my worst enemy to life with a PC, there's nothing a Mac can do that a PC can't, and vice versa. I just view Apple as the Lexus, Mercedes, BMW or Infinity of the computer world. They're more expensive, but pick up a Powerbook G4, see how light it is, drool over the slot-loading superdrive, and compare it to any PC laptop, and you'll see that you get what you pay for.

i also discovered Radiohead used that text to speech thing on 'Fitter happier'.

I dont think Prince used it on the rainbow children, i think he just slowed his voice down.

The slowed down voice that is all over TRC is actually a voice harmonizer. But the computer voices are from Mac OS X. In fact I replicated them at home smile

Macs are no longer obviously better for graphics/music/whatever. The standard apps are the same on both platforms. If you view your computer as just a machine to check email on, and you don't mind paying tech support people every time something goes wrong because Windows is too much of a maze for the average person to figure out, then fine. Buy a PC. They are generally cheaper.

Macs are better because the hardware is beautiful and appealing and the OS is friendly and elegant while still being powerful. OS X is flexible, stable, and gorgeous. If all you do is check your email and log out, and you don't care if the thing on your desk is ugly, than you won't care. But if you spend a lot of time on your computer, you do enough demanding work to care a lot about stability, and you appreciate that this fairly large (or in the case of laptops, omnipresent) peice of equipment in your home looks stylish, MACS ARE BETTER. If you want an OS that you can understand and use more easily at a more sophisticated level, MACS ARE BETTER. Nobody squeals with delight when they open their new package from Dell. Macs inspire delight.

I agree with an earlier comment that Macs are like luxury cars. They don't really get from point a to point b any better, just more reliably, are they more pleasant to use in the proccess.

Very well said. Here I sit with my TiBook smiling at every word written above...

One more comment and then I'm done on the subject -- I'm a senior designer at a studio in San Antonio, and there *is* still a clear advantage to using Macs over PCs when it comes to professional design. If you want to see a service bureau or offset printer cry you a river, deliver your 100-page annual report designed in QuarkXPress for Windows. For ripping color separations and film, you are better off on a Mac platform. And I'll think you'll find that Photoshop renders effects quicker on a top-of-the-line Mac than on a top-of-the-line PC.

AND...I also agree that there is a place for PCs and for Macs in the world. In general, PCs are more widely accepted because PC users have never experienced using a Mac. Mac users are generally Mac users by choice. wink

For professional studio recording they do tend to be better.
