Agree in general, would probably have Get Yo Groove On and Slave a little higher up.

We're here, might as well get into it.

I made a list, and realised I love or at least like nearly every song on the album. It was hard to rank them. Instead, I'll just list for you the only songs I don't like:

In the order they appear on the album..

We Gets Up

I Can't Make U Love Me

Mr. Happy

One Kiss At A Time

Let's Have A Baby

The Plan [and I usually love his instrumental music]

Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife

Da, Da, Da

.. and I don't even think any of those songs are horrible.. I do play and enjoy them sometimes.

Interesting you say that, those were the 2 songs that were handed out at Paisley Park a year before the release of Emancipation, when the NPG were still around.

I haven't listened that album so many times as to know it pretty well and rank it. But I enjoyed it very much every time I listened. So I'd have to re-listen to make a rank. I'm not doing it now, but I'll say "My computer" (I always associate it with Kate Bush's "Deeper understanding" from The sensual world), "Slave", "Human body" and "The love we make" got me INSTANTLY. Such great songs, and there are many other great songs on the album. I like The Gold Experience, but I don't agree with what many of the members say; for me, his 90s album was Emancipation. The highlight's sum of Emancipation easily surpass that sum* of TGE, imo. Ok, maybe Emancipation would benefit very much being edited down to 2 or even 1 cd, but anyway.

*"Shhh", "Endorphinmachine", "Eye hate u" and, if you like, "Pussy control" and "Gold", although I feel these last two are not really the GREAT tunes many people suppose.

I believe also that "Human Body" is to be noticed for being HIS attempt at 90's electronica, or a hybrid of it with his own thing. I listened to every song named in another thread that suggested "electronica" Prince songs ( http://prince.org/msg/7/383331 ), but this one is his statement about it, it's superior to the other (few) attempts in this genre he made. I appreciate that song very much - it's funky and exciting!! Some mention "New world" (which I also like very much) as also an "electronica attempt", but I think it has some traces of it, but not enough to make it a song of the genre, or a hybrid with the genre. It has the background sampler, just that.

I am shocked people are calling Face Down shit...that has ALWAYS been a fave from the minute I heard it back in 96. I love most of it...don't really dig We Gets Up, Dreamin About u, and the title track...but none of those are THAT bad. There are tracks that I thought were utter shit when it came out...The Human Body, Courtin Time, Mr Happy, Da Da Da, and I Can't Make U Love Me, but they have all grown on me over time.

Its just so relaxed and jazzy and has a big band swing type feel. Very unlike Prince, plus the sequencing of its great after the terrible finish to get yo groove on (With all that big juice and motalbo crap at the end), it helps the ease into the big single. Its cool and breezy and clever. I just love it.

I didn't really appreciate it till I heard the remix(which should've been the official version). I'm not that keen on his rapping, but its a helluva statement.

Come to think of it, ALL of the outtakes(save for "2010" or whatever its titled) should've been in the album in place of some of the songs, esp "Heart of Stone" that song shouldn't be collecting vault dust.

Just been listening to Sex in the Summer to put me in a good mood! Really loving Emancipation a lot recently. Especially watching the performances/interviews Prince did at this time cuz he looks so amazingly beautiful here! Don't know if it's his short hair, the goatee beard or what... but I could just dive into his eyes & swim in his soul. His eyes tell a thousand stories during this era. What joy to be able to gaze into them... mushy

you mean "2020" eek

i always thought that was one of the more/most interesting things he recorded for Emancipation.

it would have been the perfect intro to this album since it sets the mood and somewhat, however

slightly, explains the concept he was going for.

also agree what "heart of stone" should have been on the album. as should "she gave her angels"

and various other ones. the album needed a bit more variety. a bit more guitar here and there or

some more 'acoustic' or 'live in the studio with full band' type of songs.

yesterday i was listening to "journey 2 the center of your heart" from the tweakin' boot where it

is featured in very good quality. and i just can't understand how he could not use that one for the

album instead of any one of those rather bland covers. it's such a great, great composition.

Yep, thats the one. Its def a hit/miss one for me, but overall, the shelved outtakes were could've served the purpose of replacing some of the songs in the triple CD, as I think they sound stronger.

You know what song he should've kept for himself and released officially? "I'll Never Be Another Fool" razz That could've been a highlight.

Here's my personal list of Favorite songs on Emancipation in the order they appear on the album.

Jam Of The Year - 7/10, cool song, nice for cruisin I guess. I never liked it that much but after hearing it live on the New Power Soul Tour bootleg I have, I have a new found respect for it.

Right Back Here In My Arms - 8/10, it's a nice radiofriendly song. I like the rap halfway through it. The raps kinda dopey but I like when Prince does dopey raps like that.

Somebody's Somebody - 10/10, This is definitely one of my favorite songs on not just the album, but in general. It's catchy even though the hook/chorus is simple.

Get Your Groove On - 9/10, I initially didn't like this song. I thought the name and lyrics were stupid, but it's grown on me. I still think that it needs to be shorter though. In it's current state this song feels like it should be a single or b-side, it's just too long for my taste.

Courtin Time - 6/10, this song I used to hate with a passion, but it's gone from ear bleedingly bad to just meh. If Get Your Groove On was a single, this would be the B-Side.

Betcha By Golly Wow! - 7/10, I really love this song, the original is one of my favorite songs of all time. But it just sounds too generic here. Don't get me wrong, Prince does a fine job covering the Stylistics hit but it just sounds to mid 90's slow jam too me.

We Gets Up - 6/10, I used to love this song when I first got the album. Now its just... generic. It feels like it would fit in better in New Power Soul than in this album but whatever. It's alright but it gets old fast.

White Mansion - 7/10, This song has it's fans but I'm not one of them. I have nothing against the song, but it's never done anything for me.

Damned If I Do - 5/10, When I first heard this song I could have sworn I heard this in the Rocky Balboa game I had on my PSP. I turned on the game and sure enough, I heard something nearly identical to it. This song is just generic in my book. If your into it, great. But I don't like the song one bit. It's probably my least favorite song in the album.

I Can't Make You Love Me - 7/10, *for my thoughts on this song, check out what I had to say about Betcha By Golly Wow!

Mr. Happy - 8/10 "Turn off that weak jam man, Mr. Happy's here, and he's buggin!" If only this song came directly after Damed If I Do... I love this song. It's grown on me from being a so so song to being a catchy song that I quote often.

In This Bed I Scream - 9/10, here's another song I just love. But like with Get Your Groove On, it's just too long. I also kinda wish the song featured Wendy and Lisa like it was supposed to, but whatever. It's still mad funky.

Sex In The Summer - 10/10, man this song is AWESOME! Wasn't this the song that had Prince's son in it despite the fact that he wasn't born yet? That just adds to how cool this song it. Great cruisin' song biggrin

One Kiss At A Time - 8/10, alright song, nothing much to say about it other than it's catchy.

Soul Sancuary - 9/10, great song. I really like the melody's in it and Prince's falsetto shines really bright on this song.

Emale - 7/10, I actually like this song, it just feels really dated nowadays from that snyth line and it's subject matter.

Curious Child - 6/10, really uh... Renaissance-y... Yeah, that's a thing. This is another song that I shouldn't really hate since it's just a renaisanncesque version of Do U Lie but I just don't like it.

Dreamin' About U - 10/10, I love this song. It takes you to Mars, then Pluto, then Neptune (metaphorically of course). Prince's falsetto sounds really clear here and the instrumentation is interesting and sounds... Awesome.

Joint 2 Joint - 7/10, Cool song. The beat is catchy lyrics in it are alright.

The Holy River - 10/10, this is just a great song. It drags after a while but the song is still one of my favorites on Emancipation

Let's Have A Baby - 9/10, I love this song. Again, Prince's falsetto sounds clearer then it has in years, and I just adore the piano playing on this song. I kinda wish Lisa played Piano on this song though. I don't know, it just seems like it would have been cool.

Savior - 9/10, This is just another one of those songs I couldn't stop listening to when I first got the album. I read somewhere that this reminds people of Eye Hate U but I barely hear the similarity.

The Plan - 4/10, Not much of a song... It just sounds like something that belongs on Lifetime... If your into this kinda thing your into it, but I'm not.

Friend Lover Sister Mother/Wife - 8/10 People love this song, but for whatever reason I just could never care for it. There's nothing wrong with the song but it just seems off to me...

Slave - 9/10, I used to love this song, but it's gotten to the point where it does nothing to me anymore. I kinda like the original version of this song (Slave 2 The System) more, but whatever.

New World - 8/10, this song is catchy, and I love the reference to Brave New World in the lyrics.

The Human Body - 5/10, I really don't care for this song. I just don't. It would've worked better as a b-side or as a bootleg for us to eventually find.

Face Down - 10/10, This song is just derpy. I love it. It's so offbeat and purposefully bad that it's awesome. I love when Prince calls out to the orchestra and instead of hearing this loud powerhouse orchestra like your expecting to, you get this weak keyboard sound. It's a fun song, and the Chris Rock performance is off the wall.

La La La Means I Love You - 9/10, this is a cover that I absolutely love. Maybe it's just because I heard this version before hearing the Delfonics version.

Style - 7/10, Once again, we are greated with a song thats awesome... BUT TOO LONG!!!!1!!11!one!!1!!!

Sleep Around - 8/10, *read thoughts on the song above*

Da Da Da - 2/10, Cool beat. Otherwise, it's just a horrible copy of Joint 2 Joint. This reminds me of that song on the NPG Maxi Single that Tony M did... In the sense that they both made me puke.

My Computer - 8/10, A ballad about computers... What?

One Of Us - 10/10, The last cover on this album... And it's a cover of One Of Us (you know the song, the one Dr. Evil sings in Austin Powers, The Spy Who Shagged Me) I really like this cover, I feel like it's superior when compared to the original Joan Osborne version. I like the lyric change from Slob to Slave.

The Love We Make - 10/10, Great song. It's catchy and the lyrics are cool.

Emancipation - 6/10, I used to like this song, the bassline is funky as hell but my biggest problem with it is that the lyrics are just... Meh. It's a cool song and when I listen to it I don't regret it, but I don't exactly enjoy it either.

Overall I really like this album. It was one of the first Prince albums I actually bought and it's been a favorite ever since.

This was a bit long I know, but whatever razz

Purple is the color of my heart,
Bruised from you leaving me.

you mean "2020" eek

i always thought that was one of the more/most interesting things he recorded for Emancipation.

it would have been the perfect intro to this album since it sets the mood and somewhat, however

slightly, explains the concept he was going for.

also agree what "heart of stone" should have been on the album. as should "she gave her angels"

and various other ones. the album needed a bit more variety. a bit more guitar here and there or

some more 'acoustic' or 'live in the studio with full band' type of songs.

yesterday i was listening to "journey 2 the center of your heart" from the tweakin' boot where it

is featured in very good quality. and i just can't understand how he could not use that one for the

album instead of any one of those rather bland covers. it's such a great, great composition.

Yep, thats the one. Its def a hit/miss one for me, but overall, the shelved outtakes were could've served the purpose of replacing some of the songs in the triple CD, as I think they sound stronger.

You know what song he should've kept for himself and released officially? "I'll Never Be Another Fool" razz That could've been a highlight.

well it still would have been a better 1st single than "betcha by golly wow" lol

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
