GREATEST Prince songs - the results

U voted... here would be the fan's choice, single-disc GREATEST PRINCE TRACKS compilation. In order of popularity:

1. If I Was Your Girlfriend
2. When Doves Cry
3. Purple Rain
4. Anna Stesia
5. Joy In Repetition
6. Sign O' The Times
7. Adore
8. Sometimes It Snows In April
9. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
10. Mountains
11. The Beautiful Ones
12. Kiss
13. Bambi
14. I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man
15. She's Always In My Hair
16. Gett Off
17. We Can Funk
18. Let's Go Crazy

Some interesting points:

-- All songs from the 80's, with the lone exception of Gett Off. The next closest song from the 90's and beyond: I Hate U at #25.

-- Nearly 140 songs mentioned, and - I believe - all of his top 40 hits, but three: Thieves In the Temple, Take Me With U, and Betcha By Golly Wow.

-- Only B-Side to make the list: She's Always In My Hair, at #15. Next favorites: 17 Days at #21, and Erotic City at #22.

-- Last one left off: The Cross, at #19.

-- Top "early" song (pre-1999): Bambi (by a landslide), at #13, followed by Head at #30.

This is probably how I would sequence it:

1. When Doves Cry
2. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
3. We Can Funk
4. Joy In Repetition
5. If I Was Your Girlfriend
6. The Beautiful Ones
7. Anna Stesia
8. Sometimes It Snows In April
9. Sign O' The Times
10. Adore
11. Mountains
12. Bambi
13. She's Always In My Hair
14. I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man
15. Let's Go Crazy
16. Gett Off
17. Kiss
18. Purple Rain

Thanks everyone for voting! smile

Moonbeam

Hmmm...interesting selection. I think it's heavy on Purple Rain, Parade and SOTT and light on Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 (none for ANY of these?).

shrug Okay, i'll bite, if nobody else will. The org in its infinite wisdom wink has collectively voted Prince's greatest 18 songs.

Whilst i can accept, albeit somewhat grudgingly, that some personal favourites(eg.The Cross,Let's Work,TRC,When U Were Mine) failed 2 strike a chord with the majority, surely Controversy is a glaring omission .eyepop

After all, there r 18 songs listed yet we still couldn't find a place 4 it?! nuts

Ok, so i've no right 2 criticise, as i didn't participate in the poll; i simply found Controversy's absence baffling. confuse Perhaps it's not nearly as popular with the die-hards as i'd imagined? Well, music"let me tell u"music it sure sounds Funky (yeah, that's with a capital F!) 2 me! nod

PS. Not merely sticking up 4 my favourite Prince song, as it may even fail 2 scrape into my top 5. It's just a bit of a shock not 2 c it rated; i think i need a lie down!

Hmmm...If I Was Your Girlfriend at #1?? I would have bet it would be Adore, and like someone else mentioned, none from the 1999 album?? I would have hoped Little Red Corvette would be in the top 10 at least...

I'm actually really surprised to see Kiss up there. So many Prince fans I talk to are sick of that song and feel it is played out completely and nowhere near as good as Tom Jones' far superior version!

(OK, OK, that Tom Jones bit was a lie but the rest is true!)

I love Kiss; I'd have it at #2 if it were up to me...

Too many hits...ugh. The poll was for GREATEST Prince songs, not GREATEST hits.

When did this poll take place, and where the hell was I?

O.K. All the songs listed are great, but I always found Prince's greatest songs were those that were obscure; the ones that never would've made the top ten, twenty, or one-hundred. Yeah, I do love the songs listed, but what about the songs on the TRC, Crystal Ball. Where's Scarlet Pussy, Pink Cashmere, Sexy MF, And God Created Woman, Let's Work, I Wish U Heaven, Electric Intercourse, Crucial? I could actually name a million more, but those were the ones that came into my mind in seconds. Not complaining, because the list has some mad great songs, I'm just asking.
