Prince - Book by Per Nilson

Can I please ask if there is a difference between these two books?

A Documentary - by Per Nilson

DanceMusicSexRomance - by Per Nilson

Are they the same book with different titles?

Also I notice there are two different covers to DMSR book - one is an early pic of him playing & the other is a black cover with him on the side of the book edge (facing towards the spine) - are they the same book just different editions?

Sorry at work so unable to upload pics right now.

Thank you biggrin

Yes, A Documentary was his first book printed in 1990 and then updated in 1993. Its a chronological style book on his career, followed by a comprehensive discography and illustrated with photos (I have a 1993 edition) and it was large format, A4 size of thereabouts.

D.M.S.R. On the other hand is a small (Novel sized) paperback with an excellent discussion of his career up to the end of 1987, it has chapters named after a song on each of the eras he discusses (Eg, The Parade chapter is called "Love will conquer if you just believe" and the SOTT chapter is "Sign o the Times, mess with yo mid"). At the back is another discography listed as all of his sessions arranged up to the end of 1987 and it also discusses all of his protege work as his own. The photos are limited to a few pages in the middle.

This book was published in 1998, but has been reprinted with a different cover, this would explain your two versions.

The author also wrote the definitive Volume the Vault and an update called Days of Wild.

All of these books are excellent and thoroughly recommended.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Oh thank you so much - I just did not want to buy the book on-line to discover that the "DMSR" & "A Documentary" were the same book !!! At least I can now buy them both knowing they are different but by the same person. I appreciate your help. lol

A Documentary is wildly out of date now, I honestly wouldn't both buying a second hand copy - you can access basically the same format, but 100 times more up to date by bookmarking princevault.com

DMSR is the one to go for smile

Everything really is online.

There hasn't been a good book on Prince on a long time and they only focus on the first 10 years of his career in depth and everything else is just like wet dog food.

any plans for a new book? so many things have happened; the break with WB, producing own music at PP, the demise of PP label, distribution deals and these concert/newspaper giveaway.

would love to read behind the scene reasons and results of above.

Maybe he wont write a new book because he feels that people in general are not intererested in Prince enough to read it? So it would not be viable?

There's a book called Prince:Chaos, Disorder, and Revolution that came out a few years ago.

It includes some more "up-to-date" stuff, but it's nothing new.

Its by British Journalist Jason Draper, very good in parts but overrall not anywhere near the detail or quality of Nilsens books. Still that book is good in the sense it goes right up to 20Ten and its the best discussion of his career over the whole period (It does not just focus on the 80s). It also avoids all the critical barbs and muckraking that u find in Possessed by Alex Hahn. A goo book but very bitch and subjective (Hahn generally can not stand his 90s work outside of Gold Experience).

Days of Wild + Turn it Up + Updates = The Vault

You don't need them if you have The Vault.

No there will not be a new version of The Vault. It's been discussed many many times on here but the team have pretty much disbanded and Per has no desire to work on a new version.

That said, most of the team's notes have helped create www.princevault.com so that's about as close as you can get to a new version of the book.
