Help me chose the 4th Track for my own 00s compilation
well, not so much a compilation as a kind of companion disc to "lotusflower".
since I don't really like any of the albums from musicology-20Ten except for the lotusflower title disc as a whole, I have been trying to get my fav tracks from those albums onto a single killer disc. but I'm having a bit of trouble in chosing the #4 track.
what would you put there? i'm not taking anything off here. perhaps i could add one more song, if you have any ideas where it should be placed. but I'm mostly just looking for something that would fit in slot number 4
it should be either a fast, midtempo or just plain out fcking weird track no ballads for this spot.
01. 3121 02. Beginning Endlessly 03. Future Soul Song 04. 05. Lion Of Judah 06. Dance 4 Me 07. F.U.N.K. 08. The Word 09. All The Midnights In The World 10. A Million Days 11. Ol' Skool Company 12. Reflection
I used to have "in a large room with no light (2009)" in that spot simply cuz it fit there quite comfortably, but i don't really like the song

so it should be a song from anything between musicology and well, today.
i'm sure i'm overlooking some special bside or internet tracks that would be just perfect.
or some deep album cuts i should give another try.
i'd also, just for the fun of the thread, be interested in what you would put on a 12 to max 14 song compilation of your fav stuff from '04-'12.

Isten, I like your album, but I can't help but feel there's something missing. Regarding track 4, you are definitely missing What Do You Want Me To Do? love, Spirit

only 12 songs?

a CD can burn easily 18-19 songs...

those are a bit too early for this compilation, they're both from 2000.

I just changed my suggestion to Black Sweat. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

but albums should not outstay their welcome. 12 songs is all my mind can take in one sitting. after that it gets a bit too long. this one is almost 60 minutes, it's long enough

yeah, "what do you want me 2 do?" is one that i've always had a softspot for. but i relentlessly cut the whole thing down to 12 tracks.
as far as something missing? tell me

then I have to say BLACK SWEAT
but sticking to 12 songs means that you're forgetting great songs like Sticky Like Glue, Musicology, Lavaux, Cinnamon Girl, Fury, Dear Mr. Man, Love, or Chelsea Rodgers... [Edited 7/11/12 15:38pm]

Isten, I think the 'something' missing is the genius-esque sequencing to your album. Whilst it is very good, it is falling into the same problem that Prince was/is having of being a touch too generic and predictable (although I love your maverick placing of Lion Of Judah). Try listening to Somewhere Here On Earth again, by yourself, in the dark... love, Spirit

i'm trying your suggestions guys, so far "valentina" fits best in that spot, it doesn't disrupt the flow and future soul song leads into it pretty nicely.
but i just hate that song and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

you are, fcuz, right. the sequencing is just very difficult. i always try to get a bit of a "flow" to those type of compilations as a whole but it's also very important that a song is nicely book ended by others, all sort of streaming into each other without any jarring cuts or skips.
it's funny that you should mention "somewhere here on earth" because after your first post i looked at my tracklist again and said to myself "the falsetto, that's what i'm missing here almost completely"
05. Lion Of Judah 06. Dance 4 Me 07. F.U.N.K. 08. The Word 09. All The Midnights In The World
that's my favorit bit of this whole thing. they all complement each other very well and they just 'work'. each one driving the other forward or slowing it down a bit.

i know i just said that i hated "valentina" yet it's been stuck on repeat for 5 times now
it's growing on me bigtime. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I don't know if this is too early for your compilation but why not 1+1+1=3? Or maybe Incense and Candles Purple is the color of my heart,

Isten,
How about something more along the lines of...
Side 1.
01. 3121 / Black Sweat / Love (Extended Jam) 02. Beginning Endlessly 03. Somewhere Here On Earth 04. Silver Tongue 05. A Million Days 06. Lion Of Judah 07. Dance 4 Me 08. F.U.N.K.
Side 2.
08. What Do You Want Me To Do? 09. The Word 10. All The Midnights In The World 11. The Marrying Kind / If I Was The Man In Your Life 12. Future Soul Song 13. Dear Mr Man 14. Ol' Skool Company / No More Candy 4 U (Extended Workout) 15. Better With Time (dedicted to Kirsten Scott Thomas) 16. Reflection (featuring Wendy M. and Lisa C.)

oh, i like that. i like it a lot
i'm always a bit undecided on putting 2 ballads back 2 back tho. but i see you're not affraid of that
i'm gonna put this in a playlist, well, as far as possible since you mention some jams/work outs that i obviously don't have. but i do get the general idea. and it's a good one. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Musicology or Black Sweat. "New Power slide...."

wait a minute. i always dismiss musicology right out of hand. but then whenever i listen to it, it's really a very cool song. that might just sit best at #4 out of all the ones i've tried so far.

Isten,
Of course, the major weakness in your criteria is that you have decided to keep Lotus Flower protected. Whilst I understand and agree with your love for this treasure of an album, in my opinion, you significantly diminish the value of Prince's body of work in terms of the compilation. It would be like disregarding The Rainbow Children from his 1999-2003 output. You get a totally different picture from what actually was.
The other major area for development in your compilation is related to your evolution in musical appreciation of major songs in the Prince canon like Call My Name, Get On The Boat, Guitar and Planet Earth. It is understandable why you may have turned your back on these absolute gems, but there's a reason why they featured so prominently in Prince's estimation.
Listen to them, again, as if you had never heard Prince before. His only competition is, well... In the meanwhile, you have much work to do...enjoy!

well, no home made prince compilation ever really works 100%, now does it.
and eventho his albums post 1995 have been quite hit and miss with notable exceptions of The Rainbow Children, One Nite Alone, LotusFlower and largely but not completely 3121, prince is still an artist who you can only fully enjoy or appreciate if you listen to his albums instead of his invididual songs.
well, imo, anyway.
i try these little projects from time to time but ultimately give up on them in favor of listening to the entire albums, even if i don't like them that much to begin with.
but i thought perhaps with some input from the org i might finally succeed in making a compilation of post musicology material.

Isten,
Right you are. I gave up making compilations a LONG time ago. They are ultimately impossible, but it is fun seeing you succeed/struggle with that familiar process.
I must say, your sterling editing work in narrowing down the era towards 12 songs really does serve the purpose of helping me realise more and more just how under appreciated much of his newer work is, even by his hardcore fanbase.
It would appear that we sometimes tend to 'hate' his new work, until he releases his even newer work, and then the old work becomes better!
A strange relationship, that's for sure.

You've got a lot of my favorites from the 00s on here. I'd go with:
1. 3121 2. Vavoom 3. A Million Days 4. The Word 5. Here 6. Future Soul Song 7. Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful 8. Turn Me Loose 9. Act of God 10. Dance 4 Me 11. She Loves Me 4 Me 12. FUNK [Edited 7/11/12 23:56pm]

I don't have my laptop here to check out the flow but personally I would definitely have the acoustic version of 'Love' on any 00s compilation.
