Do people really believe Prince fucked his own sister? Really? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

i do not know. I think that the tone of the song is one of someone that felt victimized by the relationship. i think it is possible that there was some abuse. It is the conflict that makes me think there could be something to it.

that's true, the "don't put me on the street again" shows the power differential. I think P, being the sexual trickster he was, was giving us a taste of his own unique feminine posturing. we got to see lots more in the future. In any event, i've always loved the music, the music is horny without the lyrics, it's one of the only songs I can think of where the music turns me on and the lyrics turn me off. |

Agree. Not only did he write a song about incest, it was not an immature/cartoonish take on it (i.e., "i got to do my sister, har-de-har!). The ambivalence (desire & anger) seems real and sincere. I don't think it actually happened either, but boy is he a good "actor" in his songs!
I like your last statement because I've felt this strange dichotomy with a lot of P's work - something almost grotesque or ridiculous about it, yet I LOVE it. That's what sets him apart.

I mean if it was true, wouldn't we have heard proof of this already by the 16-years-older sister or by a relative of Prince by now? And judging from the reactions, how would we know if it was true anyway if someone did talk about it? |

the sister was 32 Prince was 16. As I said Lorna was 16 years older than Prince. And when Prince was 16 he moved to New York to live with her (16+16= 32). He was the victim she was the predator. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |

He should have just called the track "Shock Value" and called it a day. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

i guess anything's possible. Prince has said that the album was based on life experience if I remember correctly. Doesn't mean anything, with Prince you never know what's what. Maybe he just wanted to take a dig at his sister, maybe he fantasized about her, who the fuck knows with that sick fuck. The facts we do know are that he went to New York I think he was around 17 or 18 at the time and lived with a sister. The sister tried unsuccessfully to get him a contract. Those are things that are substantiated, the rest we'll probably never know. |

Yeah ANYTHING is possible with what he really means about "life experience" which maybe, just maybe, he never really experienced... again who knows? |

Yeah and remember he was saying a lot of things. The song "Jack U Off" gave off preconceived notions of his "real sexuality" whatever people thought he was. |

that's what i'm getting at, taking a dig at her in the only way he ever did/does, in song. Maybe he didn't get along with her when they lived together. However, do I really believe any of it at the end of the day? No, not a bit. |

Perhaps Prince didn't feel he was getting what he deserved (sound familiar?) from his sister so he hit the streets working the boys for cash and incest was his way of denying the samesex sales. Perhaps hitting back at his sister for 'forcing' him into the streetlife. Bet he got paid upfront.

I heard an audio interview with Tyka when she was talking about her book and stuff, the interviewer asked her if family was ever shocked by any of Prince's songs; she said that they were not "shocked" by anything, but she found "Sister" annoying because people always asked her if she was THE sister.
She said that it was about their half-sister who was 16 yrs older than Prince, and they all thought she was the beautiful, sophisticated cool older sister, and so the song was kind of a tribute to her. Yup.

Yes, the song was a TRIBUTE to his wonderful, cool older sister. I may be mistaken, but I think she even said that the sister was flattered by it.
The interview link is on this thread http://prince.org/msg/7/315907
Don't know if the link still works, and interviewer was crappy and she goes on about her own "career," so if you can't/won't listen to it, just look at the last post by moneymade on that thread for confirmation.
