Sister: Autobiographical or Fiction?

"She showed me where it's supposed to go. A blow job doesn't mean 'no'. And incest is everything it's said to be."

He's crazy. Who knows. There is no way of knowing except if you asked his sister. For all we know, he is talking about a lover of his who was more his sister than a girlfriend.

But if anyone tries to tell you that he once appeared onstage with James Brown and Michael Jackson, don't believe it. That is a total lie. hmph!

That's right, if he didn't sing about it, it didn't happen. It's all there for those that care to look hard enough.

It's very simple.Dirty Mind is Prince's first concept album.CONCEPT IS SEX AND SEXUAL TABOO ,various deviations. Even Pop ditty When U Were Mine gives a nod to a threesome. So of course it's fictional shock lyrics.

I always thought it was just a play on words....not his actual sister but a "Sista" that he was singing about!

Interesting hypothesis. But then why would he call her "my sister" rather than "a sister" or "this sister?"

I doubt it, in those days he was doing what he had to to shock people, the album flopped but paid off in the respect he gained artistically and continued to pay off with the more comparatively refined deviations of his next 3 albums, as he became more popular he didn't need to be quite as outrageous sexually. But, like everyone else here who knows, the record shows that he lived with a sister in New York who tried to get him a record deal when he was young. It's a fucking raunchy song I know that but when I think of my "sister" it's a disgusting, disgusting thought so in that way it's anti-erotic for me.

well, this is Prince the lyricist we're talking about here lol

But actually, I hear people refer to "my brother" all the time and they are using it figuratively. Also, the song does refer to incest, so maybe that is why he said MY sister, to begin the wordplay.

I've contemplated that before but then there's the incest line.

that's the play on words. He's talking about being with a "sister" and then says how great incest is. It's pretty funny (if that's how he intended it)

Tyka Nelson said that it was untrue in the Michael Dean's podcast and that it was for shock value.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But it sure made folks talk, even after 32 years.

I agree....I never thought it was about his actual sister. It's all wordplay!

It would not have been Tyka but Lorna. She was about 16 years older that Prince and the one he did stay with in New York when he was about 16.

I don't know why people are even entertaining that it could be true. Prince had a lot of imagination then.

maybe because he had a sister that was about the right age when he was about the right age that he lived with at the time?

I don't think Tyka was referring to herself. I believe she was just stating in general with all of his sisters that it is fiction.

I agree, but since there's no proof either way, tongues will wag.

We all know Prince likes to front this stud image, the roots of the song are more than likely pure imagination, or at it's most scandalous - he probably walked in on her showering and caught the faintest glimpse of bush before skuttering out as fast he could, face burning with embarrassment - then he went giggling and sniggering to Andre about it something. You know how boys are.
