Did Prince Work With The Cure on their cover of Purple Haze?

Before the internet I always scanned news papers and mags for anything Prince. I may be mistaken but I thought that I read Prince worked with The Cure on their cover of Purple Haze. The beat and guitar sounds like prince

Anyone know if its him?

The Cure sampled the beat he used in a remix of "7" and in "To Whom it May Concern" but I don't think they met and worked together.

I think we'd know by now if it had happened. Neither Uptown, Per Nielsen, Princevault or any of our local specialists have ever reported such a thing so I think it's a definitive, unambiguous NO.

I'm so excited to see some of you guys love th cure too! I thought all the rest of you prince fans lived in a whole different musical world from me!

I think robert smith is probably the most underrated guitar player of all! He has such a distinct sound! As for his song writing its more like poetry!

I would die and go to heaven if they worked together on something!

I never thought I'd see The Cure getting mentioned on here, let alone getting such love!

Robert Smith has indeed written some great songs, and some really beautiful ones too - belying the 'doom laden goth' image that most people immediately think of when they're mentioned.

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me always reminded me of Prince's Sign 'O' The Times in many ways - there's such a diverse collection of songs on that album. And Disintegration was my absolute favourite album back in '89... it's still a great listen today.

BTW, great info about the sample used in Purple Haze. I'd never clocked that before.

Yep 'beautiful' is exactly right! To me just like heaven is one of the most beautiful and moving songs ever!

Why would anyone consult Prince regarding Purple Haze? Not only does he not ever play the song, but there are a zillion videos out there that show you how to play it note for note, not to mention effects pedals (virtual and otherwise) that will give you that sound. Teenagers in Eastern Bloc countries post videos of themselves playing that song. Asking Prince to help you cover Purple Haze would be like asking Picasso to come paint your house.

Prince has never been one to play in the style of Hendrix (his sound is more Santana), and was too antimidated by Jimi's original to actually make a rockin' version of Red House (Purple House) for that Hendrix tribute record years ago and released that incredibly weak and forgetable version instead (which is a shame, because he has played amazing versions of it live).

I didn't say consult. I wondered if he played on it as a colaboration. Have you listened to this track? The beat sample is Prince.

Prince played kick ass version of red house blues on Paris New Morning 1986 aftershow and it's mindblowing version, much better then the overrated Rave Dvd version,i don't agree that Prince sounds more like Santana.prince have phases when he's more emulating Santana and phases when he's into Hendrix Mode.Early guitar solos from live show 1980-1986 sound more like Jimi,Prince incorporated more Santana during the 90's .often he combine both styles.
