Where do I begin?
I absolutely LOVE this concert film! I saw it in theatres in the fall of '87,and I just went NUTS while watching it.I was literally dancing in my seat...lol...that film is the next best thing to being at one of his concerts.Creatively speaking,Prince was at the top of his game in 1987.He had the best band if his career. He had the best album of his career. And his stage performances around that time were truly inspired and exciting. As someone pointed out, this film is like 'Purple Rain' without the "tacky drama acting scenes".It's strictly a concert film.Yes,there is a slight story and a few spoken lines, but for the most part,it's Prince and his kickass band doing much damage on-stage.Prince dances up a storm in this film, and the chemistry between him and Cat is just amazing (I really miss her). This film left me breathless when I first saw it.

Yeah - agree with all the above, but nobody has mentioned the vocals! I never liked Slow Love the song, but the live version is so cool, especially the scream. His voice also gives me chills on If I Was Your Girlfriend - beutiful.
And from what I read they kept most of the sound from the concerts but the picure quailty was shit so they had to re-shoot a lot. but who cares, it is still hism singing.

I really wanna know from those of you who love it. Is it the quality of the performances? The songs themselves? Did you just fall in love w/ the peach guitar or what? I think some of y'all just like looking @ Sheila Fill me in - I know the performance of "Forever in My Life" was killer but other than that, what's so memorable about it?? Glowing review after glowing review I read on this mutha, I really wanna understand. Don't get me wrong, I like it okay, his hair looked great!! but I've NEVER been as impressed as most of you seem to be. Make me fall in love w/ it too, I'm begging you (yes, I'm very fucking bored)... Thanks! I've read your posts and you're a true fan in every sense of the word, but I can't believe this post. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, I just don't understand yours given your love of Prince. Admittedly, I am biased because I think SOTT is Prince's best album and best movie. Your point is fair, but other than the things you mentioned, let me give you a few things to think about: 1. The title track: Prince rocks out SOTT, with 2 killer guitar solos. 2. "Play In The Sunshine": P again picks up the pace of the 2nd track, with 2 killer guitar solos. Sheila gets some nice soloing in, and the number is paced by the Leed/Bliss-led horn section. 3. "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man": IMHO, this was the finest moment in Prince history. The cool mini-overture, leading up to a faster-paced live version of the classic LP track. Good vocals, again paced by a great call-response sequence with Fink and Leeds/Bliss in the middle of the 1st guitar solo. A bluesy guitar solo follows, rivaling any other solo I've heard from him. Then you have the cool "Rock Hard In A Funky Place" interlude and a guitar flourish to finish it off. There is no other P moment to equal that one. 4. "Slow Love": Prince goes to his balladeer roots, making me wish I coulda been a singer. 5. "If I Was Your Girlfriend": Ditto here. Nice bass [?]solo at the end. 6. "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night": A showcase for the best band in the world at the time. Prince really just sets the stage for the horns and Sheila to go to work. Cat and Sheila do a great dance number and Prince goes to work on the drums. James would have smiled. 7. "The Cross": Prince closes the movie with a magnificent power rock anthem. Great guitar solo. By the way, when exactly did you become a Prince fan? That may have a lot to do with your opinion. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

yeah it was in the late 80's when a friend kind of persuaded me to watch SOTT in a new opened cinema (with an excellent sound system btw).I didn't know (and like) much about Prince these days but I liked the titlesong from the radio - for me a very unique song with deep lyrics...so I went ...
and what I saw just blew me away from the beginning ...wow...what a musician, what a band ,what a concert. All of my prejudices about Prince melted away experiencing SOTT, PLAY IN THE SUNSHINE, I COULD NEVER TAKE THE PLACE, FOREVER IN MY LIFE, THE CROSS,.. etc..kind of live! Primarily I was amazed by the variety of musical styles and the mastership of their performance ! Secondly(?) by the sexyness and coolness of it ! That was the moment I realized what an excellent musician and incredible performer this man has been and hopefully will be for the next decades! peace and be funky

SOTT was everything you would want in a concert flick. I put it right up there with "Stop Making Sense" (that other great concert flick by my other favorite band). I'm still pissed that I didn't get to see it in the movie theaters. My babysitter promised me that we were gonna see it, but nooo. We had to go see Teen Wolf 2 instead. Though I prefer the SOTT-tour generally over the Lovesexy-tour, the Dortmund video beats the SOTT movie. Man, y'all some hard peoples to please. That's like criticizing a brand new Lexus SC coupe for the windshield wipers and the bird droppings on the hood. This is disturbing coming from people who say they're Prince fans. Because we mainly missed out on the tour in the US -- a huge disappointment -- the SOTT film is all we have. And quite frankly, I love it regardless. It may not be live, but it LIVES. Y'all need to get over such minor deficiencies. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Prince is laughing dementedly as Cat thrusts and the drum goes: DUM-DUM-DUM, DUGGA-DUGGA-DUM-DUM, DUGGA-DUGGA-DUM-DUM, DUGGA-DUGGA-DUM-DUM, DUG-DUM-DUM-DUM, DUGGA-DUGGA-DUM-DUM etcetera...

Somehow this doesn't sound right. Granted the whole show was re-created on the Paisley soundstage in front of a rented crowd for the most part. But I don't think they were lip synching. I agree!!I think it's aboslutely brilliant that they did recreate the whole show playoing to the film and got everything right!!Can you imagine how hard that is? See, this is why I asked the question. The clip of ICNTTPOYM is the video that came on & I was NOT moved to even turn my head to watch!! I don't know what it is, there's just something stale about it for me. But don't get me wrong - SOTT is in my top 5 Prince albums & I love it, but the FILM just doesn't compare for some reason to me... Thanks for contributing your thoughts though I'm gonna watch it again based on what people are saying, I hope it works on me finally By the way, when exactly did you become a Prince fan? That may have a lot to do with your opinion.
