Fell in love with this from the Neon Rendezvous boot back in the day. I don't know if I like that version or the Birthday Show version better.

The contrast is so striking, it's like his very soul has gone missing. It ain't age nor maturity nor the other bullshit excuses people like to make. The core is missing. disbelief

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

90% of it is old age, plain and simple.

The fire burned out...just be happy that it burned so brightly for so long and we still have audio and video.

Those two songs off of that rehearsal are still some of the most played songs/versions in my household. lol

I find it fascinating how he not only changed the feel of Something in the Water over the years but how they managed to make the concert version still a bit different from the rehearsal version they played at the warehouse just a day or two before the real show.

I mean, they rehearse Noon Rendezvous and Something in the Water, and both rehearsal versions sound great and like pure magic, and then, a day later, they go on stage and play those songs and they sound slightly different AGAIN.

Old school fans love to play down the Purple Rain album and era and it´s become the norm to say the 1986-1988 period was the best era but, in my opinion, those 1982-1985 years were the most amazing time as far as lyrics, music and passion are concerned.

of course it is... the dude is not 25 anymore. I'm suprised he even broke out days of wild... those days are gone.

but even so he still is great live... just not what he once was

this board is so nasty half the time... Prince is old... wake up people and stop wanting this guy to be the Prince of 1985. Goodness

YES! The Neon Rendezvous version is just pure hipnotic heaven! I like the birthday version but IMO the Neon Rendezvous version is tops. Awesome song to listen to on long drives or when smoking weed!

Well, for my money, Prince is just as funky, fiery, and talented today as he was in the 80s, and I've been a fan since 1980.

I have to agree with this actually. I think people get a little dramatic when they compare the Prince of today to the Prince of yesteryear.

There are things about his early music that were very affected by him just being new at it and being young. His skill set wasn't as advanced as it is now, and he was still learning and paving his own road. He was also lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, culturally, while it was happening.

I think another reason why people get dramatic when comparing him to his younger self is that we were all younger, too, going through the things that we go through when you're young, and attaching those memories to the music along the way. The old music has attained a level of sacredness that is impossible to be recaptured.

There are moments today that I find just as thrilling as moments from back then. Prince of yesterday could never pull off something like "All This Love" from Montreux, imo.

Also, one of the reasons that this Something In The Water performance is so striking is that he sounds very unguarded, and is really just putting himself out there. I think you could also attribute that to him being young and fearless, but these days he's got diehards jumping for the chance to shit on whatever new music he puts out. I think that would make anyone a little more guarded and hesitant to be revealing and vulnerable.

People can't accept that the times/situations that influenced his songs are over and gone. For instance 'the just one lousy dime' line from How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore would now be a reference to a tweet or a FB poke. He was 25 then and running high hog in Minneapolis with some of the baddest chicks in the game all up on him, of course he had fire in his belly! What 25 year old with that much pussy being thrown at him wouldn't? The Reagan Era, censorship, the threat of nuclear war, The Cold War and the everyday current events influenced so many tracks but those things have since resolved themselves. He moved on to other topics and so has the media in general instead of 'Ronnie Talk 2 Russia' it's more 'Kris Talk 2 Kim' before it's too late!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Yes!

It's as much an eargasm as listening yet to ANOTHER live version of Kiss to me is like having 6 minutes of blue balls.

I believe it all depends on who he is hanging out with in his offstage life and what types of personalities are on stage with him. I suspect it has much less to do with what originates within Prince.

Drop him into band of punk ass bitter men, and you will hear him try to ride and conquer their vibe. Drop him into a crowd of gentle happy people, and you are hearing it in his music.
