kick another jungle jam. Hmmm, do you wanna dance?... Sure there are many many more if you take the entire last decade. That would be a list running into the dozens. Yet, I'd like to keep it very very recent and just pick "avalanche" as something that blew, and continues to blow, me away. It gets better and better everytime I listen to it. Incredibly beautiful. Alot of the excitement u felt back in the day was the newness of it all and you probably generated a lot of the thrill internally with that youthful energy.
I'm past the point of expecting to be blown away by prince. I know him too well. That being said i still enjoy the hell out of 99% of what he does. He's given me so much pleasure that it's just icing now. And very tasty icing at that. Some of the nutcases on this site are like junkies forever trying to get the same high they got when they shot up for the first time. It's not going to happen no matter what prince produces. I could sit here and list dozens of great songs that have blow me away, but I’ll just put forth "Avalanche", "Xpedition" and "Family Name" as but 3 examples of music that is not only as good or better than anything existing on radio, but as good or better than any music be released by anyone. Are people who only pay attention to pop culture and listen only to Top 40 radio going to be "blown away"? Surely not, but that is their loss for having such narrow tastes and only being able to relate to that which is fed to them by the major media outlets. You almost have to be tone deaf to listen to the radio these days, with acts like Jay Z, Ja Rule, Kid Rock, and Nelly blowing people away. Most of the great art -- be it music, film, books or whatever -- is made and mostly experienced outside of the mainstream. That's my opinion, and it has nothing to do with radio play or charts. The stuff he was doing in the Purple Rain/Parade days was unique, new, fresh...a sound that wasn't happening at that time...BUT P is an artist, and artists switch gears and try different things musically. I'm still going to buy his albums, because he is a phenomenal talent...People do put too much weight on chart success, and that's a shame. I honestly wish I could rent my brain out to people who aren't blown away by Prince's music of late. Believe me, it's a trip.  But if you ain't feeling it, you ain't feeling it. There are so many reasons why that could be that it would be fruitless of me to even attempt to go down that road of speculation. I just hope in the future you'll be able to enjoy the music as much as I'm enjoying it right now.
Music doesn't have to sound different to me than anything else to get me worked up, just better than anything else. Right now Prince is writing brilliant music. For those who need it to also be fresh, cutting edge, sounding like nothing else before it, pioneering, or any other way you want to describe it, are probably going to miss it. But that's cool, perhaps you are at least enjoying other great younger artists that are pushing the boundaries. | |

There hasn't been anything recently by Prince that has blown me away. Before someone calls me a nutcase or loans me their brain, I would like to say that it is totally cool that nothing has blown me away. Perhaps, some other time in the future, he'll make something that will. I have nothing but trust in that. I have never given any credit to the record charts, I liked him before he went commercial, and I liked him after. Prince does not have to crawl around on the floor or gyrate or cuss for me to dig him. The songs of Prince's that have deeply affected me spoke to my soul, my heart and spirit. The new music doesn't do that for me, plain and simple. When TRC came out, I was in a dark place and Prince's music was always my escape, my sanctuary. I listened to it everyday for a month. I was excited, it was new, but sorry, nothing on it blew me away. I can't feel what isn't there. After the suggestions of fans on this site, I went back and listened to a lot of music. It's not feeding my soul. I won't apologize for that. For someone to think of me as less of a fan because I don't dig what they dig is an insult. | |

TRICKY99 i feel the exact same way cause we watched michael jordan domnique wilkins charles barkley shaun kemp shaq o'neal isaha thomas magic johnson and dr j slam and jam the 1st 8 years of their careers but after some time their games matured and went back 2 the fundamentals... and because in this age of shine and flash we havent seen anybody "just play" in a while that alone will keep us watchin and listenin till the day he decides 2 hang it up... I've been trying to work out a track-list that summarises Prince's best work of the last couple of years on a single CD. IMO he has released so much high-quality music in the last couple of years, let alone the last ten. I can't possibly fit the best tracks from The Rainbow Children, XPectation, ONA Piano, High, ONA Live, and the other NPGMC tracks, onto a single CD. There are just too many amazing songs throughout these.
I can understand the lack of great tracks for much of the 90s, but the 2000s have been a different story.. Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop. | |
