"1999" 30th Anniversary I was just lookn through my Prince cd collection and happened 2 check the release date 4 1 of his most beloved Albums/cd "1999". It is 30yrs this year it was released in Oct 27, 1982. 1999 was the Album when most ppl really got n2 Prince such as myself. I was just really getn n2 music in general of all kinds. I mainly listened 2 the radio back then ...not so much now....Lol. I remember later in 1982 like 2wards the end I was hearing this song on the radio and the chorus went like this "so to...night I'm gonna party like it's 1999"!! I really liked that song alot. I heard it so much then I asked some1 who it was and some1 said it was by Prince. I had heard of him from a few songs like "I wanna be your lover" and a few others.
Then I heard this other Jam by early 1983 called Little Red Corvette and I knew that was from Prince loved that 1 even more but never knew the real meaning until I was almost an adult. I was 11 or 12 at the time so I am thinking it's about a car. Didn't know about any used trojans and tame her" little red love machine" was about the Ill na-na.
That was the humor in a Prince jam the 4play on words if u will. 1999 had more jams that I liked Delirious sounds just like it's title with a Elvis style of cadence to it vocally.
DMSR was just a nice song 2 groove 2 self xxxplainitory. Free wasnt really feeling it.
A-U-T-O-Matic was kind of hot, erotic, S&M TYPE and the vid made it all the more hitting.
Lady Cab Driver, All the Critics, International Lover, and Let's Pretend We're Married were all on point. Not only have music critics raved about this being 1 of Prince's best ever but it has been inducted n2 the Grammy Hall Of Fame. Prince and Michael Jackson at the time MTV 1st came out were the only R&B artist 2 be played, and we all know how this story goes from there. 1999 was just the 4play 2 what was 2 "Cum" pun intended. So congrats 2 Prince 4 a very innovative and thought provoking album filled with dance grooves, slow jams, and heavy hits. 1999 Don't cha wanna Go?

I LOVE that album and the song itself '1999' was one of the first 45s I ever got. I was 11 years old and I got it for Christmas. I will never forget that! I am an 80s Music Junkie !

I really like your story, review, and ode to the album! Hard to imagine a timeless album like this is thirty years old!

Does this album not make every ones top 5?
Perfect in almost every regard (I'm still miffed about Free in place on Moonbeam Levels). The very epitome of a talented musician balancing artistic vision while still creating access able songs for the pop market.
If you give someone a copy of 1999 and they aren't blown away, it speaks to their taste in music (or more accurately, their lack there of). "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds

Nope, the good is very good but it's dragged down by the terribleness of Automatic, Something In The Water Does Not Compute, All The Critics Love U and to a lesser extend Lady Cab Driver.
LP1 on it's own could be in a top 5 easily, but LP2 really drags it down for me. Top 10 probably but top 5, hell no. RIP

Man I love something in the water! Not the kind of track to play in public admittedly and very very eighties, but by fuck it's unique. Ish. Very eighties though. Did I say that already?

Not in my Top 5 either. Or Top 10.
However, "All The Critics" and "Lady Cab Driver" would rank very high on my favorite songs list. "Little Red Corvette" is a classic too. And I also like "Delirious", "DMSR" and "Let's Pretend We're Married" a lot. The rest is good, but I wouldn't really care if I never heard any of those songs again.. Never particularly liked 'Something In The Water' ...

My fav prince album.
Heard it after purple rain. Was hooked. Easily 1 of my all time favs. Was in secondary school @ the time. Made me buy a rude boy badge. These were the vinyl era. [Edited 4/29/12 13:09pm]

If not in my top 5 right outside of it. While some people may wish for some songs to be cut down I love the longness of them. Something In The Water is brilliant my 3rd favorite behind Little Red Corvette and Automatic. Automatic is jsut so unique in every way, just brilliant.

You got to be kidding me. To each their own, but Automatic and LCD drag the album down? You think Free is a better song than those two?

Man, this thread reminds me of being in the 8th grade during the 1999 tour. The tour hit the Macon (GA) Coliseum in Feb '83. So, I am sitting in home room (or 1st pd.--dont rememer) when this chick opens a poster she got at a concert the night before showing three women in négligé. About that time a guy who had flunked the 8th grade (at least twice) saw the poster and relays to all who were listening that he had just seen "those people" the night before on his job at the Hilton in downtown Macon. He goes on to say (mind you we are talking circa 1983 in the deep south) "This short faggot in high heels walked through the lobby in this fucking purple trench coat throwing money at everybody." I wish I could remember what else he said. But, everytime I go by that hotel (has changed owners/names many times since) I think of our guy and that story. I also think now Prince would never be caught dead doing a show in the Macon Coliseum (lol). “At one time she was considered the world's youngest belly dancer. And Prince is the world's oldest woodland nymph!”

This album was, is, and always will be my number 1 from Prince and any artist. It's the album that hooked me for life.
It's the perfect mix of funk, new wave, and pop, and will never be topped. I can't even begin to count how many times of listened to it. It was ahead of its time and nothing else sounded like it when it was released 30 years ago.
~And even when I'm right, I'll be wrong...it's Automatic too.

I recall having to hide the cover from my parents given the shape of the "1" and was too scared to play the end of Lady Cab Driver loud given Prince's enthusiasm to continuasly give things to the driver ......
