Let's solve this Prince mystery On the youtube there is a live concert video of Vanity 6 live.i don't know which one ,but i know it's not the homecoming concert. Well thee is a guitar player with a fake beard.is that Prince? Guitar licks and the way his body look is very Prince like but i can't tell.the backing band is Bobby Z on the drums,Terry Lewis on bass ,matt Fink on keys.so it's not a typical band that used to follow Vanity 6. So my question is is the masked guitar player Prince? Did he ever play behind Vanity 6? Everybody can see the footage that i'm talking about, please comment.

I think he's saying, yes it's Prince and mistery has a y in it, not an i. RIP

So there is a video of Prince playing guitar behind Vanity while he have fake beard and funny clothes and nobody cares to discuss ?

no, i personally don't believe or think it is prince, he doesn't look or sound like prince. yes, the rumor has it that it is the man himself, yet i would debunk it in my opinion

I don't know what I'm meant to look for on youtube. Vanity 6 concert is not specific enough. "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

It's during Drive Me Wild performance they show guitar player with fake beard, and sailor hat i think.when you look at him you have a weird feeling like when you see somebody you know with mask and guitar solo and riffs are pure Prince [Edited 6/17/12 10:45am]

I asked the same question Vanity and she said that she can't remember. The guitar player is the only one masked.other band members are easy to recognise

I don't need to look at the footage to answer one of these questions.Yes Prince had to play behind v6 at least once. Prince fired Terry and Jimmy after they were stuck in Atlanta due to a storm. Terry and Jimmy missed a triple-threat show. The Time was the v6 backing band. Prince had to fill in.

The performance is from 1982 in Detroit at the now defunct club "The 20 Grand". It is Jesse johnson on guitar not Prince. The Time and Andre Cymon also played at the 20 Grand. Check out this older post with a Andre Cymon interview in Detroit which mentions the show. http://prince.org/msg/5/3...sg_8385289 Hope that helps. Big Chick [Edited 6/19/12 15:27pm]

Big Chick [Edited 6/19/12 15:27pm] thanx but i don't think it's Jesse.why would Jesse mask himself with a fake beard.guitar played was hohner or telecaster.Jesse didn't play those and the masked guitar player is smaller in frame .i can't find the video, because the one i added to favorites is erased. Maybe some orger have the picture of guitar player from that concert. Judging by rhythm guitar and lead work it sounds like Prince.i know jesses plaiyng style.it's not him [Edited 6/19/12 21:45pm]

The Vanity 6 performance from the "20 Grand" club that your talking about was actually broadcast late at night on the now defunct Black owned Detroit television station "WGPR". In addition to that broadcast, "WGPR" also broadcasted The "Second Coming Houston Controversy show", 1999 live from Houston, the full 6/7/86 Parade Birthday concert and the majority of Prince and associated artists promo video's including obscure ones that MTV wouldnt touch like "Automatic", "Lets Pretend Were Married", "Sexuality" and others in the early to mid 80's. I acquired that tape back in 1990 from a friend that had a treasure trove of old WGPR broadcasts. Unfortunately the show is incomplete because the taper told me that it aired out of nowhere(after Trapper John M.D. lol) with no promotion(which was typical for WGPR's late night programming). He grabbed a video tape and tried to record all he could. The full show is not circulating at all. During the years of 90 to 96, one of my closests friends deejayed at WGPR's radio station. In fact, he usually came on after the legendary "Electrifing MOJO" late at night. This is the same MOJO that interviewed Prince live on radio station WHYT after the 6/7/1986 birthday show. I used to hang out with my friend at WGPR while he deejayed and would always chat up MOJO and we became friends. I asked Mojo about the Vanity 6 show and if there was a more complete version of it. He told me that it probably was in the TV station video archive on 3-quater inch master. Since the TV station and the radio station were in the same building me and my friend went to check out what might be there. Unfortunately around that time 93-94 most of the broadcast video cassettes that had concerts or promo videos on 3-quater inch master tapes were gone. Most likely from employees who just took them since the Station was going off the air for good. In addition to Prince shows, WGPR also broadcasted alot of pro shot concerts from other legendary R & B artist such as Parilment/Funkadelic, Rick James, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and other high calibur of the same ilk. Even though what they broadcasted was in a complete gray area, WGPR ran it anyway since they received these video sources from band members. Mojo and WGPR where major reasons for Prince's early success in the Detroit market. Thats why back in the day, Prince cited Detroit as his second home. It's not really like that now but thats the history. They played the hell out of Prince and the Time during the 81 through 85 era. I'm sure there's some detroiters on the board that can concur with these statements. As for the Vanity 6 show it is Jesse playing guitar, since that was a small club gig they kinda had to double up on the disquises since they would probably be seen. I believe that some members also had heavy makeup on to appear blacker. For the arena tours they where barely visible behind the fishnet back drop and also were not being taped to be broadcasted.Thats also the only Vanity 6 show that has pretty extreme close ups. This was very early in the promotion for the 1999, What Time Is it, and Vanity 6 albums. Thats why Jesse is not playing his trademark pink guitar. They really did not want people to know that The Time was the backing band. Thats the deal with the disguises and Jesse. Now if you still want to believe it's Prince playing thats fine but your wrong. I just took a half hour writing this post to explain the V6 show, its origins and a little historical perspective (which I really dont have to). I'm just trying to give you a proper answer to your question. Peace Big Chick "Security Ensuring Thee"

Man thank you for the input.on this concert the backing band isn't the Time.behind Vanity 6 you can see Bobby Z. On drums Dr. Fink on keyboards and the only Time member is TERRY Lewis.if you have it on tape go to a song Drive me Wild. After the 3rd minute you will see a guitar player with fake beard,he wears sunglasses and have sailor t-shirt.his arms look like Prince's .guitar rhythm and solo sounds like it's him.why don't you take a close caption and post the image here to see what other orgers will say

If you can please send it to me. I just moved and the vast majority of my Pribce collection minus my cd's is in storage. I haven't watched it since 2002, when I transfered it to DVD. I would be willing to look at it from your perspective. Which I have no problem with and I like the fact that your sticking to your guns that it's Prince. I like definitive answers as much as you do. Thanks Big Chick

Thanks Big Chick Big Chick, thank you for that wealth of knowledge you shared. Im from Detroit (although at 30 I was too young to experience the full love Detroit had for Prince in the early to mid 80s) so you shed alot of light on things I've been wondering about over the years. My old bandmate, who's older than me, swore he had seen "Let's Work" from 1999 Houston on WGPR several times in 1982/1983. I for one didnt believe it because I didnt think Prince would allow them to air something like that. But with all of his Detroit associates over the years (Quentin Perry, Billy Sparks, Greg Brooks, Wally Safford,Mojo, etc) and the way Detroit embraced him it all makes perfect sense. I've often wondered how shows from Prince, Pfunk, Bootsy Collins (all from Houston,TX) in such great quality were put into circulation. I now know! As for that Vanity 6 20 Grand show, I watched it after reading this thread and it is clearly Prince in the fake beard. Near the end of the video they show him in the shot for about 10 seconds and his stature, his arms and hands, as well as his skin tone all point to it being Prince. And Prince'a unmistakeable rhythm guitar licks are present throughout the show. Im also convinced that it's Jellybean Johnson on the drums just from the way his drum kit is set up. Whereas most kits have the snare and high hat to the left, Jellybean always has his set up to the right, and the drummer on this video has his set up the way Jellybean does. Anyway, thanks again for that piece of Detroit history. I can remember in the summer of 1993 on a Saturday afternoon, Mojo played the full audio from the Sign O The Times concert movie on the air! One reason why not only Prince but other artists loved Mojo was that he stuck to his own format. While other stations played only the hits, he played the album tracks. Prince even remarked to Mojo in 1986 that he called him after his June 7,1986 Detroit birthday show cuz while leaving the venue Mojo played "Automatic" on the radio. That song as well as songs like Private Joy, Partyup, Lady Cab Driver,Annie Christian, etc were Detroit radio staples! Mojo is a legend!
