Prince, Al Green, and Lays potato chips In America there is a Lays Potato chip commerical that is in full rotation. It's about the good kind..the plain ones. No extra flavoring, just salt. They are playing Al Greens 'Lets Stay Together' as the music that is prominent.
Just another reason why I understand Prince's fixation on control of his music. Yes, I know he has allowed some songs in the past to be used for commercials but it has been very minimal. And not a complete bastardization of the work. Seriously..Al Greens playing over the woman eating potato chips and thats it. I know some will joke and say that he bastardizes his own songs himself for a myriad of reasons but the poiint is that he does it on his terms with his own creations.
Think about it the next time some of yall bitch n moan about Prince being a control freak. "Climb in my fur." |

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that way, everytime I see that commericial. To use a classic Al Green song like that over a bag of potato chips, in my opinion, is insulting, but then you have to wonder if he appproved them to use it like that or some record label exec. |

update: they showed it again..this time with Queens 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
I imagine if they could, they'd use The Beautiful Ones or Adore if they could "Climb in my fur." |

Yep, they probably would, but I'm still stuck on them using Al's song and associating it with Lay's potato chips. The connection makes absolutely no sense. |

Well, I can see the connection with the songs as they are genral love songs so they are saying this model or you john/jane q public are in love with the chips.
Its kind of lazy assed marketing imo (the ad men behind this must be the most uncreative just graduated dorks) but thats worth being a control freak over I feel. "Climb in my fur." |

nah, nobody knows those songs anymore... ads use songs like Crazy Little Thing Called Love because they've become short little musical cliches that everyone recognizes, even if they don't know the name of the artist or the song. Something like Let's Stay Together gets used in ads and movies and tv so often that it's become ingrained as 'that smooth romantic song that you play for comedic effect... you know the one i'm talking about... I'm So In Love With You? I think it's called?'
None of Prince's songs have that quality because they aren't allowed to be in movies and ads. Personally I dunno if that's good or bad. Probably good, because I bet if Prince allowed his music to be used like that, commericals would just play the synth hook of When Doves Cry whenever they needed to make a 'LOL the 80s were SILLY!!' joke. |

Kiss, You Got The Look, Lets Go Crazy, 1999, Purple Rain, I Would Die 4 U, Cream, Diamonds n Pearls, I Wanna Be Your Lover and more all say "you're wrong" "Climb in my fur." |

I CANNOT STAND THIS COMMERCIAL. I nearly have a fit every time I see it. And then it shows up here too! ARGH! I'm glad Prince is a control freak, especially with stuff like this. What a way to cheapen a song... rdhull, you mentioned Cream. I can already see it in a yogurt commercial, and those commercials are the WORST right now on TV. Awful, awful, awful.

I could see them using "Kiss" in a lispstick ad, "U Got The Look" in hair or makeup ads, and "Diamonds & Pearls" in a jewelry store commercial. But, I'd rather not! If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in! |

Kiss and MAYBE 1999, I can see in commericals. The rest would just confuse people, I'm sure of it. Maybe the part of Purple Rain where he's saying 'Purple Rain', so people would be able to say, 'oh, I guess this must be that Purple Rain song...' [Edited 6/15/12 20:42pm] |

I agree. I think it is a wise thing for P to control his music so it isn't defiled by parasitic corporations or a lower level version in sample stealing talentless gangster rappers(aka modern day minstrels). |

So would Prince have approved the use of Gett off in the movie PS I Love You, or because it is only a small section of it, they don't need his permission, or does it go back to Warner Bros?
