Getting old Saw Lady Prince fan customer at my job at Gresham Oregon Marshalls retail store on friday and the 19/20 girl coworker next to me who was ringing her items up says "who's Prince" when I said hi to her and said oohh Prince fan when I saw her symbol necklace she was wearing. I was so embarrassed she did not know who he was. I showed her my symbol tattoo really quick...me fan tooo yey! So fun...But the young girl next to me didnt have a clue who he was. I say Purple Rain and she goes ..ohhhhh. ok I'm getting so old.... and the music industry sucks! I hate that the younger generation is missing out on such great and positive talent. Its hard to take. Scared about that. I've seen the future and it will be..... Michelle Basart Gresham/Fairview/Troutdale Oregon [Edited 6/9/12 23:28pm] MJ, Madonna, & Prince Fan

This ish is 1993. By 1993 we were old and Prince was old news.
lol @ "getting"
People also act like the glory rebirth days of The Gold era etc weren't already blase' and a who cares attitude to the zeitgeist of those times.
Which also connects to the ridiculousness of folks going back n forth of Prince only playing hits and not new material. Its all acting as if he, and us as fans, are still relevant when the purple religion has not been relevant for 20 years at least now.
For those of you valium, thats even predating the internet boom.

You're not getting old, a lot of the younger generation is just getting dumber these days, that's all. When I was young, I had heard of tons of the older stars. I may not have listened to them but I did know who they were. I mean, what damn teenager listened to Carol Channing "Hello Dolly"? Certainly not me but I was well aware of who she was because she was constantly on shows like "The Love Boat" and the game shows and the variety shows at the time. There's nothing on TV these days but a bunch of reality bullshit. Andy is a four letter word.

I don't think it's about getting old, I Just think that right now Prince and his music are not currently relevant to the consciousness of todays music listeners. the other day when i was at work kiss came on the radio and i started singing along every word note for note without even realizing it lol. One of my co-workers who is the same exact age as Prince btw, Came by me and said who sings this song ? I said Prince ! She said really ? Whatever happened to him ? does he even still sing anymore ?

I dont think it is about getting old so much either - it is more about the younger ones being ingnorant and not expanding their musical knowledge. The other night my 24 year old daughter and I were watching the Queen Jubilee Concert (which sucked by the way) and the only ones she knew were Jessie J, Kylie Minogue & Robbie Williams. She did of coure know of Elton & Paul McCartney but not a fan of them. Other performers such as Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard she did not know - and she was suprised when I knew the songs they sang. Now those singers are not of my era but I was always a music buff from a young age & always dug through the family LPs.
Maybe this is the problem? The digital age is killing off music? You no longer sit on the floor and look at album covers and think "that looks interesting?" and give it a whirl on the turntable and maybe find something you like?
My mum had lots of old albums - and even some random stuff such as Winfred Atwill (Honky Tonk) not my thing, but at least I got to hear it? Now people just download what they want off iTunes if they hear an song they may like on the radio?
So maybe it is the parents fault the kids are ignorant now, we dont pass on what we liked or expose them to different musical things - or they are just not plain interested?
For us music was a big part of our lives, now kids have too much other stuff to do such as computer games etc and are used to a spoonfed diet of what they can listen too - instead of exploring what was in the past?
As far as Prince goes - well at the W2Australia tours I did notice some younger people in the audience (I took my daugher too) but it woudl help if he would release more NEW music to the masses in the normal way - on CD - and then maybe the younger ones would try a new album and then visit the old catalogue? [Edited 6/10/12 14:49pm] Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Yes, yes, yes MOST of the teenagers of my time are ding-dongs who don't know what GOOD/FUNKY music is.....
Sucks for them!
I on the other hand am happy that my family exposed me to all kinds of music!

You live in Gresham? Do you know Gresham Station shopping centre between Burnside and Division? The Gresham City Hall and Civic Drive MAX stations are on either side of it.
I lived by there for a while. |

Yes I totally agree here. I thank my parents entirely for my love of music. When I was little they used to dig out the vinyls and listen to them for hours. So much so that when they told me their record player broke I promptly bought them a new one cause the idea of their records never being played again broke my heart. And as for my generation (I'm 26) I think people go one way or the other. Either they're completely obliviously living in their musically bubble or they're like my husband and I who live for music, it all it's shape and glory!
