I'm new around these parts... And to Prince. I have been lurking around this site a lot recently and just reading through the threads to get a feel of what goes on and I have to say I'm just a little nervous to meet some of you so I hope this isn't considered a "nonsense" thread. But yeah, considering I'm just blooming into this fandom or famdom whichever you guys call it. I'd like to know...
In terms of Prince & his music what are some of the Albums/songs/Interviews/etc that I absolutely have to experience? What are the things that you would recommend to a new fan? I've seen almost all of his films {Purple Rain, Graffiti Bridge, Under The Cherry Moon, Gold chains or Chains O Gold.} I haven't seen GB or UTCM get much love around here but I really like those two films.
Anyway enough with all of my rambling, Share your thoughts with me please? [Edited 6/8/12 20:04pm] ~ You're a desire, I get higher every time I speak your name ~

The problem with Prince fans is, we don't agree... much.
Half will tell you a particular song or album are essential, the other half will hate on that same song or album...
I would break it down to albums, singles/ext versions/b-sides, associated artists, outtakes boots, live boots. Then, for each category, just go throught them chronologically.
Like what you like, don't like what you don't like. Don't worry about the opinions of others, that's missing the point...
Good luck and welcome to the Madhouse!!

Have you seen this collection of old interviews, and various texts (his kooky "open letters," things from tour programs, etc.):

Hi Skylight,I agree with everything djthunderfunk said . When i started collecting prince (/mpls artists) as a kid ('86) i started with getting all the albums, which is what u said your doing 2 . You prob know about these sites but incase u dont - TheDigitalGarden.org & Princevault are very helpfull. Its just my opinion/taste but i cant resist recomending these albums 2 u! - Parade,Sign o the times,Lovesexy,'Love symbol',Come,Crystal ball,The Truth,The vault,Rainbow children,Lotus flow3r. Actually there are tracks i love on all his albums but these are prob my fave. I would also recomend these dvds (concerts) - Detroit 7 june '86,Sign o the times official concert film & Livesexy. As 4 studio boots i think Work it 2.0 & 30 years of unreleased funk seem a good place to start. The 12" ext vers & the B sides are great 2 as are alot of the 'associated artist' work. Hope that helps! Welcome & Enjoy the journey! "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

Welcome Skylightt,
If you like acoustic, The Truth is for you. If you like jazzy laid back The vault definitely. The rainbow children if you can handle alternative stuff that is unpredictable. Lotusflower I think is just great too!
Google might be your cousin....but you-tube is really your friend when it comes to outtakes, songs that are not well known etc. Enjoy the ride "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

I'm going to tell you what I tell everyone who asked what to start with, the best, etc from an artists of Prince's stature, or Bowie, Madonna, Stevie etc etc...
You have to start from the beginning and get each cd from there if possible. Don't just collect them, listen, and move on to the next one. You have to kind of 'live' with each release for a while, just as if it was in real time as they are released in year increments anyways for the most part. This way you experience the growth, triumphs, falters, side-steps, mis-steps etc of the artist.
I know with Prince that there is an abundance of material to cover so getting everything is going to be expensive, and at times impossible, but try to go along with the timeline as much as possible so you can "understand" Prince and the music. "Climb in my fur."

good advice especially when you get to see the progression Prince makes with his music, whether you like it or not. Just don't start somewhere mid-90s. As brilliant as that work was, you can only begin at the start. [Edited 6/9/12 8:01am]
