He needs a better name. Even Prince2012 would be better than Welcome2whatever. Most of his audience in America would have been well avquainted with the states and I doubt he can Welcome Australians to Australia.

He should chuck a Clapton (?) and tour with a 100 piece orchestra and a ridiculously huge all star band including Bruce Springsteen as a support act, Lenny Kravitz on rhythm, Larry Graham on bass Elton John on keys, Ringo Starr and Sheila E on drums Lionel Richie and Paul McCartney on backing vocals, Wendy on 3rd guitar, Lisa on 2nd keys, Keith Richards on crack and Santana,Ernie Isley, David Gilmour, Dex Dickerson and Chuck Berry as guest guitarists for one or two songs each.

[Edited 6/4/12 9:46am]

That would be ridiculously good!

But joking apart I'd love him to do some duets with other great guitarists in medium sized venues.

I've seen other artists have done this and think it's a great idea. He would have to add in the b-sides from each album, and play with the original band he was with at the time. I'd definitely hit up the shows from 1999 to Emancipation.

Richard Thompson did a version of this on his latest tour. He had a hat that contained slips of paper with the names of all his albums on them. During the show, he'd have an audience member pull one - and then he'd do at least four songs from that album.

It was pretty cool - gave the audience a chance to hear things they hadn't heard, at all, or hadn't heard live.

For Prince, doing four or five songs (for example) would help him get around some of the songs he doesn't perform, anymore - or that wouldn't translate to a live setting (not sure how he'd do the dozen "voices" in For You live, for instance). But it'd still be a chance to hear some things he almost never plays.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

that'd be a cinch as some albums are short..of course he could still play other hits in each concert but b-sides would be a must as well...the b-sides from each perspective album though of course

original band drums upo some other factors ..I made a post years ago about it..I dont really want to see a new band play Computer Blue etc etc..i dont want the oringal or new band to do SOTT material etc etc...this is why Prince has it better than Jagger

fuck the revolution, the npg, (some of us), mick jagger, and the horses they rode in on

Please bear with me…this is for the music

Prince outlasted Jagger so to speak…or did it differently and it worked even if his latest tour did not gross 300 mil like the 40 Licks Tour. And fuck the Revolution and the NPG and the horse everyone rode in on. And because The Stones and Prince eventually since 1980 go hand in hand (1980 because Prince became Freaky then…not just due to the 1981 Stones opener incident).

See Mick said he didn’t want to be singing Satisfaction when he was 40—he wanted to leave the “undignified” rock job behind and go to movies etc…but their 20th was in 1983 I believe. Just after their hugely successful Tattoo You tour. But after that Jagger did Undercover and it was underwhelming ( but still a classic deep cut of an album) and he tried to leave the band for solo success..sure sure he wanted only to do a side project (lie lol).

If She’s The Boss solo album and tour had been radically successful...and if his fucked up follow-up Primitive Cool had been a huge, huge success, he would have left the Stones because he had put in 20 years already. He blinked! He ended up having to reform the Stones and make nice nice with Keif to continue his success. He cant do it without the band.

Prince doesnt need the band..he did his own thing continually and continually…with different bands from the git go. The Andre Cymone /Dez era...the Markus Brown-Dez-Lisa era..the pop Revolution era—the travelling circus expandsed Revolution—the SOTT and Lovesexy bands…the NPG n all its incantations and members ..lawd.

Through it all we always come to see Prince. That’s right, he’s the C, not Morris. We all go to see him , Prince, period. The bands and if they are endearing to us are just gravy. Sure Prince has not sold out one iota of what The Stones have, and he never will. He wont have gazillions. But Mick can’t always get what he wants without help. Prince can. Baby, he’s the star.

.

completely disagree with the PP's listing of acknowledged as his best tours - Purple Rain, SOTT and Lovesexy by far and away outshine the rest for sheer performance quality alone. The nude tour comes close as it had all the amazing music of Lovesexy but more of a mix up rather than the set peformance without the story telling side so way less structured. Purple Rain being the only tour I haven't seen. But that syracuse show leaves no doubts.

Excitement wise I trult thisn te current Welcome 2 tour is up there cos you seriously have no idea what he is gonna pull out of his bag of tricks! You know what he won't do but as for the rest well even a psychic would have issues!!!

No ticket from main show, no membership then no small venue seat for you!!

I think that's a terrible idea. What about those of us who would prefer to forego an arena-style show (and Purple Rain played for the gazillionth time) to hear the rarities that are usually played in a small venue? Those shows are usually general admission and extremely taxing, physically. Why should we stand in line for hours (enduring heaven knows what privations), only to have a bunch of people sashay to the front of the line when it's time for the show because they paid $25 for a main show ticket?

the whole point being he is high on the main shw and does an AFTER jam to come down which is why the aftershows are more laid back and funky so those that have been at the main show SHOULD have priority they are on the same high. By making them ONLY available to ticket holders from the main event purchaed in advance then there will be no need for the mad dash across town, queing for hours with all the fuckatards. The price put on the aftershow element should also be commensurate with what that show is worth - within reason too.

I guess a LOT depends on what the term "best" means as that truly is very subjective. BEST for me was lovesexy for the spiritual awakening and my understanding of the teachings from that tour. BEST may be musically or best may be sheer spectacle to others.

Totally agree! A lot of people seem to feel his best shows are the more intimate ones, in a small place. Maybe it's the thrill of being up close and personal and the exclusivity of it. I've seen him countless times in an intimate setting and the thrill of that ends too. Personally, I've always had a better time in a full theatre/arena with thousands of screaming fans on their feet and the sound of thunderous applause. Prince seems to exude more energy at a larger show as well.

All I wish for is for something new. No covers, and no rehash material. A total new and fresh tour of material that we are not tired of. The last 10 years or so is so boring and stale now. I LOVED most of the Montreaux Jazz festival sets from the dvds that came out. Something like that and no round stage in the center. I prefer endstage setup. I dont care if he plays new material or old material as long as it is "new" and not just a rehash of previous tours.

My DREAM(i know it will never happen) is for him to do a tour where the audience picks every song he plays. Barry Manilow did this and it was pretty cool. He could have a person go and pick random seats and whatever they want him to play he has to play. If its dirty he can do a clean version and if the band doesnt know it...so what!! just improvise. THAT would be INCREDIBLE!! That would keep every show fresh and you would never know what to expect.

I meant it as a joke, but the more I think of it the more I like the idea. He’s could bring along a guitar, a bass and a drum set, start loops and play on top of it. He could create loops and patterns on the spot, sort of like a portable recording studio. Rather than calling back old band members to do something traditional like a rock set, it would be forward looking and new. I think it would be great.

Some great ideas, and odd song choices, some of them awesome. I saw Prince 6 times in 2011, and each show was less than 2 hours, so he'd never play all of that unless he did a total medley. I will also put an unrealistic setlist in my post for fun...He's got to play enough hits for the casual fans, and should probably play enough stuff for the hardcore fan.

First, he needs to get most of his old band back. A nice mix of Revolution and SOTT bands. He should play about 2.5 hours....and maybe a reformed Time as the opening act, with or without Jesse Johnson.

Time Opening Set:

Get It Up

Cool

777-9311

Strawberry Lake

Sick

Toast To The Party Girl

Jerkout

Skillet

The Walk

Gigolos Get Lonely Too

If I Was Yo Man

The Bird

The Stick

Jungle Love

Prince Set 1:

Let's Go Crazy

Sign O The Times

Play In The Sunshine

Housequake

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

When Doves Cry

1999

Little Red Corvette

Delirious

Strange Relationship/6

Data Bank

Baby I'm A Star

Set 2:

I Like It There

Rock Hard In A Funky Place

Witness 4 The Prosecution

Computer Blue

Anotherloverholenyohead

Fury

I Wanna Be Your Lover

Soft And Wet

A Million Days

Still Waiting

Kiss

Mountains

Diamonds And Pearls

7

encore 1:

If I Was Your Girlfriend

The Beautiful Ones

encore 2:

Purple Rain

Anna Stesia

Guitar: Dez Dickerson, Wendy, Mico Weaver

Bass: Sonny T

Drums: John Blackwell, Sheila E

Keys: Lisa, Dr Fink, Tommy B

Horns: Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss, Greg Boyer

Backing Vocals: Nobody other than the band members who can do this.

Now if the above show was played with complete lyrics, no ridiculous stage antics, it could probalby get right at 2.5 hours, and maybe under, by slightly shortening instrumental breaks in songs like D&P, but not making them corny like on the 1997 tour.

This is a huge Pipe Dream, would never ever happen, but I keep posting posts like this hoping it will.

In Theory, a great idea, especially for some of the Lovesexy and Graffiti Bridge material.

In reality, this is a new trend by over 50 artists, as Sting, and George Michael have done this with mixed results.

Since I don't like Prince following trends, let those other dinosaurs keep following trends. Prince may hardly ever play much new material live, Sting and George Michael don't even write anymore. Sting keeps releasing albums of ancient songs, and hasn't done anything close to rock music in ages.
