I recall back in 94' Tom Joyner broadcasting from PP and going into the vault and joking around..."there's a hit over here...that might fit in my pocket"...
But Im sure P has hundreds of complete songs and hundreds more of incomplete tracks/ideas.... |

I'd like to think that prince has some perfect album or triple album of songs he was gonna put on records but they were just too fucking good to share with his fans. Like he is just putting out the outtakes and saving his best stuff for some mystery special occasion when he just wants to say fuck off to all of us and prove to everyone how fucking good he can be with one final masterpiece of a triple album that noone can deny is great.
the music quality dropped so dramatically starting with gold.
been listening to the come tracks on the dawn 4.whatever and they are sooooo much better than the gold tracks .. it really is like a different person .. don't know why because weren't all those tracks worked on at the same time kinda .. yet .. space, come, dark, letitgo, papa, pheremone, getloose .. all destroy all that crap shit like endorphine, now, wemarch, dolphin (that song is like half clone prince half real prince, can u guess which is which?, how beautiful starts so good .. then the chorus is like ... huh?)
anyway .. its more likely the vault is just a pile of crap worse than the records he puts out .. his official cds are so bad its hard to imagine what his outtakes look like these days
I always thought Come kicked the ass of TGE.
And I likely think we've already seen most of the best the Vault has to offer. With all the big sets of Prince music out there, my gut tells me that more then half and probably more like 90% of his Pre 1995 vault is in the hands of Orgers already. And to be honest, the outtakes of crap like TRC and Old Friends for Sale don't really interest me that much.
Though on the other hand it would be awesome to have tracks like Possessed and Wonderful Ass in perfect quality.

I agree with Come. For me, Come & The Truth were two of his only good albums of the 90's.
Speculation on the vault? I picture neglect. Dove droppings everywhere. A water leak in the 90's was never fixed so everything is damp and musky. Robin Powers sneaks in and hides in a dark corner there and even cooks meth there when she knows Prince is away. Homeless people sometimes live there. It's a mess.
This is all just speculation of course..

Sounds right. I asked around PP in the 90's. Response I got was over 1000 finished songs that do not configure on albums and I believe they said nearly 40 complete albums (meaning the album was tracked and had complete artwork and could be released at anytime) and also all the live recordings, film/video, etc.
Why does he do this? Is this normal with artists?
I guess I can understand having an idea and it just doesn't fit with the album that you are working on, so you sit on until later. But at some point this music and these songs are no longer really reflections of who he is. And as an artist don't you want your work to be representing you? Especially someon like Prince who ranges from sex-crazed cussing freak to socially conscious political activist to bible thumping prude. I think when he remakes the original to fit his current life, then it takes some of the soul out of the song - a la Extra Loveable.
So at some point everything in the vault is irrelavant. It no longer reflects who he is and if he tries to update it then it takes the original emotion out of the song, ruining it.
I've been a fan of Prince since 1982, and not once would I ever consider Prince a "socially conscious political activist". He's done a few charity projects here and there, and written a few politically-themed songs, but I would never lump him into the same activist category as Bono, Sting, etc.
Totally agree with the sex-crazed cussing freak and bible thumping prude though.
I'd like to hear your reasoning on this.

Most of it is only interesting to fans and even so lots and lots of those songs remind me of shit I've heard before.... |

I just meant, I don't know if it's "normal" for artists, but every time I think of Prince's vault, I think of Dickinson, because she was another creative artist who was extremely prolific (close to 2,000 poems) but published very little in her lifetime, she kept them secret. Some reasons - her poetry was unusual and advanced for her time, her views expressed were not in line with the religious establishment of the time, they were deeply personal, and she was a frail woman.
And scary implications for the vault - Dickinson wanted her "vault" burned when she died! She felt they were just for her, and not of use to anyone at her death. Fortunately, those managing her estate did not follow those instructions when they opened up the desk drawers and discovered the poems!

lawd, I fucking love orgers. I really do.
We have such varied opinions, and it's refreshing to see them expressed.
It's always nice to know there's not this monolythic mindset.
I agree mostly with the skeptics, considering how much he's hyped albums in the past that I found to be good, but not exactly what he claimed them to be.
However, I do think he's a genius and quite capable of having multiple really great albums locked away. |

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!..Finally someone on the org. agrees with me. Truly one of the worst joints he (or Warners..or whomever you want to believe) released. To go from "S.O.T.T" to that???....
"Gold" and "Chaos" down the road definetly made up for that trash called "Come". |

I think he's far too materialistic to destroy anything he created. As for the quality I think it's hit and miss. Vast quantity I imagine. Anything from previous decades is now going to sound very dated, both ti us and him. Bit like writing a letter or an essay. Everytime you go back to it you change it until eventually it's not what was meant at the time. Drunk and tired. |
