Prince is full of surprises what are some of the things in his music or otherwise that have surprised you, like you have said to yourself, wow can't believe he did that, said that, or course he is daring so i have had many of those moments. like Joy in Repetition...i just think wow, how did you come up with something like that, it is so mystifying....she said love me, love me. or anna stesia, have you ever felt so lonely that you thought that you were the only one in this world... like far out!!! that takes some brain power.

I agree that his lyrics are inspired. The ballads which are my favourite part of his work are amazing in this respect. The main lines in Adore stand out for me, and all of Forever in My Life and so many others. But yes Joy In Repetition is totally amazing in that way too... its kind of intertwined as in he says "holding someone" is truly believing that there is joy in repetition, amd yet saying it over and over also a proof. Its very clever indeed and one of my all time favourites.

One more quick thing on Joy in Repetition... it reminded me of Sufi practices in which repition of chants is a key element in remembrance of God; and this ties into a song I was listening to on the weekend by Jazz virtuoso John Coltrane on his "Love Supreme" album... at the end of the first piece he begins chanting... "A Love Supreme" over and over... and what does one hear? "Allah is Supreme" which many line notes acknowledge was probably intentional... So cleverness is definitely an art in music and all the best practitioners do it to some extent.

Prince hasn't surprised me in a long, long time. I mean, his music is so predictable now, that I guess you could say I'm surprised that it is that predictable.
And everytime people freak out over a new interview he gives, I always wonder, because nothing ever gets answered or we learn almost nothing about him current projects or plans.
But, in the 80s to early 90s Prince was CONSTANTLY surprising me. His albums were unpredictable as hell, and his kept changing his look. THe guy was all over the place. I mean, you'd think he was laying low for a minute, then BAM--Batman soundtrack!... Or buttless pants MTV...or Arsenio...or name change, etc. he was just all over the place....often infuriating..but always a loose canon.
Now, meh...I don't want a 50+ year old man to be that surprising....Just impressive.

He always surprises me. The latest was that "for me to poop on" quote from his recent Australian interview.
I never thought I'd hear Prince referring to himself "pooping". My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I know i'm "quoting" my above post here, but had another thought. Prince blew my mind so hard in the 80's with such amzing force and spirit that THIRTY years later I am still (sort of) holding on to hope it can happen again. THAT'S how impactful an artist he was to me. [Edited 5/22/12 1:52am] Purplehead

He was doing Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog. That surprised - me that he watched/watches Conan O'Brien, the self-proclaimed "whitest man in show business." And I was surprised he was aware of discussions on p.org.
