Shush now. Absolutely sweeping statement that is not true.
In addition to those you mention one of his all time favourite artists is Joni Mitchell.
His influences are across all music (why else would he cover songs like Whole Lotta Love, Come Together, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Miss You etc etc.) Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Log off. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

To be fair in the interviews that I have seen where he is being asked he is being interviewed by a black interviewer so maybe he says those few because of that. No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking!

What kind of answers do you expect for a question like this?

Prince has frequently cited the likes of Sly Stone, James Brown and Joni Mitchell, for example, because they happened to be the ones he considered were musical influences. Neither the interviewers nor Prince appear to have considered their ethnicity as a factor when referring to their influence. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

I guess I could have used rock rather than white but then jimi hendrix was black. No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking!

You sure have started lots and lots of threads (flooding?); perhaps it is new fan enthusiasm and curiosity, but perhaps you might mull over things a bit before starting new threads? A little filtering might be helpful. Especially considering bringing terms like "white" music vs. "black" music into a discussion.
Anyway, as to your topic, he has mentioned "white" influences as several posters have pointed out. Perhaps you don't think so, but he has a 30+ yr career with many interviews all over the world in print and on camera. He mentions that he grew up around a lot of "white" music growing in MN, there was really no "urban" radio, so when he saw James Brown for the first time, it made a big impression on him. Imagine being a little black aspiring musician - seeing a successful and charismatic artist like JB or Hendrix, that will imprint. So he mentions them. But it's no secret that he's influenced by and admires a very wide range of music, including "white."

Didn't he mention Joni Mitchell in one of that latest Oz interviews? I mean the thread subject is silly, but just sayin' you can't get any more recent than a few days ago.

Yeah, I mean, he never mentions Joni Mitchell. "New Power slide...."

From what I've read Prince mostly listened to white rock radio. His main influence as a kid was Grand Funk Railroad. Also remember that he denied that the Beatles influenced ATWIAD even though fucking Spindy and Pisa made him listen to them.
You all also forget his complete love affair with new wave.
In the end he is James Brown meets Jimi meets Sly.
Don't forget his interracial group. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Isn't Prince American? Where is the land called Black? If race is according to color then he would be what? Yellow bone? Somebody please explain.

Isn't Joni Mitchell white?
And I think it's fairly obvious he took some superficial stage tips from Mick Jagger. I don't think he really says much about his musical influences at all. Black or White.

Ok, despite the weird smell to this thread... As noone has mentioned it, if my memory has not gone completely hazy... he mentioned Led Zeppelin as his influence in the 1985 Rolling Stone interview. He mentioned Joni Mitchel many, many, many times.

I think we have established that the premise on which the thread was originally based is unfounded.
