It would sound like Sly & Jimi challenging Otis and Al to a duel over at James Brown's house.

Isn't that what Prince sounds like anyway!

I'd say to him "Prince, my man, I want you to go to Africa and spend the next five years learning all that congo stuff. Then I want you to go to China and learn all that exotic asian stuff. Then come on here down under and learn the didgeridoo. Only then can you go to Paisley Park and make a new album featuring all your funky talents and new worldly skills"

I would like a complete album together with the Clare Fischer Orchestra. All songs the caliber of Crystal Ball...

Prince used to be known for changing his style almost monthly.

I'd want to put that back in his music. Elements I'd change?

1. Get some background singers in. The usual prince multi layed vocal has become tired. Good songs like "When I lay my hands on you" would have sounded much better without the multi layed vocal. Either get a guest, or drop sing solo. (other examples: Man O War, much of Emancipation).

2. Get Prince to re-discover percussion. He has become lazy. For years, he played around with the percussion, drums and bass, and every song sounded different: ie When Doves Cry, Kiss, Mountains, Tick Tick Bang, Question of U. The list goes on. They all have a very unique backing tracks.

Now, he has a simple drummer on every track. Listen to the output of the last few years. Its good musicianship, but no longer fresh.

3. No old skool. We want new skool.

4. Change the BPM. Too many songs are taking the funk groove and nothing else.

Prince once said he'd only scratched the surface with sound. He seems to have given up trying, happy with a smooth groove.

01) Linn drum machines with live percussion overdubbed by Sheila;
02) No guitar solos;
03) String quartet playing the keyboard parts;
04) Camille's voice;
05) 12-String guitars playing funk licks;
06) Out of tune pianos stabbing out jazz-rolls;
07) It would be written, recorded and released within 7 days.

No 'Old Skool'
No 'Nu Skool'

...Skool's out.

Prince don't need skool,
He just needs a funky beat
and an x-tra large jar
of chicken grease.

I'd get him to get away from that too-slick & shiny-new sound that most of his songs have.
My fantasy is to have him do a Tom Waits-style album. Real raw & dirty sounding, as though it were recorded in an out-house (that is where Tom Waits records, right?).
And absolutely, positively no drum machines! Again, Tom Waits-style percussion...i.e. find a tin can on the floor, hit it with a tree branch & you got your snare drum!
