SUPERSTAR Prince is planning a secret show in Melbourne.

Prince is eager to do one of his post-midnight ''after shows'' following a sold-out performance at Rod Laver Arena tomorrow.

He is sifting through a number of inner-city venue options.

An announcement, with ticketing details, is imminent.

Meanwhile, Prince was scheduled to play an after show for 400 punters at The Ivy club in Sydney early today.

His secret shows and after shows, performed at small clubs, feature rarities, covers, jams and hits, and often run over three hours.

And, on the strength of his Sydney shows, the royal rocker is ready to make Melbourne go crazy.

Prince set the scene - and the standard of what live performance should be - in a commanding show of hits and unmatchable funk attitude at his opening shows in Sydney.

Prince still has that fire - and then some.

His set - a tireless run of classics including When Doves Cry, 1999 and Kiss - included seven encores, every high note intact, dazzling costume changes and the sharpest shimmies in show business.

Highlights included a quaking version of Mountains, a bracket of drum machine soul (Hot Thing, Forever In My Life, Nasty Girl) and Love Thy Will Be Done, a hit for singer Martika.

Prince, 53, is rightly proud that he and his band, NPG, are the genuine article.

''This is real music by real musicians,'' he asserted during Delirious.

''Aint nobody better than this.''

Later, in a cheeky reminder of his influence and genius, he urged: ''Somebody slap your neighbour and tell them how many hits Prince has got.''

Prince then admitted: ''I don't know how many hits I've got.''

But he kept playing them, one after another, on and on, long into the night.

Prince is the Last of the Mohicans, a rare superstar whose vision, integrity and funk is still intact.

He performs at Rod Laver Arena tomorrow, Tuesday and May 30.
