Did Prince invent modern hip-hop? think about it.
He was the first (or at least one of the very first) mainstream artists to include rap duets on his albums, and he even adopted a full-time rapper for his band (NPG, Tony M)
and then he kept using rappers from time to time (Chuck D) and was keen on the idea of R&B duets for albums like Rave, 3121 or MPLS/Lotus...
so, do you think Prince indirectly inspired the industry/other artists to include rap collaborations/R&B duets on mainstream/non-rap albums? You know, the typical "Song Title + featuring -enter name of trendy rapper- " thing?

No.
Hip Hop was invented well before the 90's. Modern Hip Hop stemmed from that and Prince had nothing to with it.

Naw, because folks like EnVogue, Toni Tony Tone, Janet, Bobby Brown and others all had the rap breakdown duets in their singles and they were all released in '89-90 way before he incorporated Tony M etc.
Yes I know Cat rapped in Alphabet St in 88. "Climb in my fur."

Stevie Wonder did a little rap on Do I Do, which was released around 1982. Stacy Lattisaw rapped on a few of her songs from the early 1980s, too. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I don't think ANYONE would agree with this theory.

You'll have to provide a stronger argument than Tony M. for God's sakes.
You are really not informed to even suggest this

I'd have to say no. IMHO, he more chased modern hip-hop than invented it. I'm firmly planted in denial

He even invented the word "Invent"

He also invented time, but later he acknowledged that it's just a trick.

P invented modern hiphop when that Puffy Combs fella took Dead On It off The Black Album a bit too srsly.

this thread proves that Prince was like TWELVE OR 14 years ahead of his time during the early 90's
no wonder why he got bored after the year 2000, he had already constructed the 00s decade, and nobody noticed...
underappreciated genius

"I want you to dance, i want you strip, i want you to give me what i want while we listen to prince"
It all adds up now, P Diddy is a murderer! http://www.youtube.com/wa...mNCkKc3kJM
and the "Welcome 2 America" concept is a reference to the song "America" off "Around The World In A Day", and that thing about Obama being a socialist and the government turning over and and and...
it all makes sense now. | |

Chaka Khan beat Prince to the punch (with his own song) with Melle Mel's rap on "I Feel For You." Then, there's Run-DMC/Aerosmith's collaboration on "Walk This Way". And don't forget damn-near every New Jack Swing artist. Prince missed the boat on hip-hop in the 80s, then played catch up in the 90s. Glad he eventually collaborated with Chuck D., but hip-hop heads ain't feeling Tony M.

In a way he kinda did. Because he was one of the 1st people to show that you don't need a band to make a record.
All you need is a drum machine and a keyboard.
Look at When Doves Cry. It's pretty much just a drum machine, keyboards, and guitar.
Even though he can play multiple instruments, and had lots of songs that had big lush productions on them. He created a bunch of songs that had really sparse production.
He did back then what a lot of producers do now in hip-hop and R&B are doing today.
Now, the caveat to that is that Prince actually knows how to play instruments. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

If I understand your questions; are you referring to the "singing the verses"? I would say no because of the Stylists and other R&B groups did it first. Even Grand Rapids own Al Green was in the game doing back at the height of his career. Prince's Sarah
