If you judged the music that Prince released during the 1990s against the music other solo artists and bands released in that decade, would he be your favourite music act from the 90s?

Being brutally honest Prince wouldn't even make my top 5 from that decade. My top 5 acts from the 1990s would be.

1. Morrissey

2. The Fall

3. Public Enemy

4. Bjork

5. Aphex Twin

It's Prince's music from the 1980s that I love, his music from the following decade did little for me.

Yes. He's not my favorite artist of the 1980s [and I can't say who my #1 would be..], but he's my favorite of the 1990s. Since first becoming a fan, I've always preferred his '90s and '00s music.. he might be my favorite of the 2000s, but I'm not sure about that..

Prince, Pink Floyd and Beatles are my fave artists.

In the 80s/ 90's/ 00's and now...

Those 3 are the dinosaurs "musically" in my life.

They all used to be incredibly good...

maybe they are all extinct by now, like those dinosaurs.....

but I live on the memories, the nostalgia..

The question is, would you rank the music Prince released in the 1990s above the music other artists released in the 1990s? Was he the best (your favorite) 1990s artist?

The question is not if you loved his 80s music during the 1990s..

Absolutely not.

I kinda lost interest after batman.
Still liked some songs on diamonds & pearls and the symbol album.
But by then most of my attention shifted to more exciting things such as:
Bjork, The prodigy, A tribe called quest, Redman, Wu tang Clan etc etc.
Hip Hop and House music took over by storm in the early 90's

Prince is still my favorites 80's artist

It helped also that I became a fan during the summer of '92 at the tail end of the promotion for Diamonds And Pearls so I had all of his previous work to fully explore too. And with few exceptions I liked pretty much all of his 90s work up to and including The Truth.

I played the fella's music to death during that decade.

hmm... there's a bunch I favoured above him in the 90s. The 90s was the golden era of rap and we got introduced to some lovely bands like Nirvana, Radiohead, RHCP, a bunch of bands had their best albums in the 90s, yet Prince was probably still my favourite artist. But not at all based on his released material at the time. He was just one of the guys you can forgive forever because of some super classics in the 80s.

Of course. It's not like he had any competition during that horrible decade.

In the 90's I still loved and respected P. But there was so much new and good music coming out at that time. The retro soul of Maxwell, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu was what I was vibing on. And Me'Shell brought back a lot of the excitement, funk, sex and soul that I started to miss on some of P's 1990's work. Brand New Heavies, DAG and the 90's Beasties stuff was cool too.

As the other poster said, Trip Hop was starting to become the sound then and I was into stuff like

Tricky, Goldfrapp, Bjork, Bomb The Bass..just way out there stuff. I remember reading on the org back then when Radiohead's "Kid A" came out (awesome CD btw) and the orgers were saying; "Oh how I wish Prince would collab w/ them or do something like this".

So strangely enough..maybe I wasn't heavy into P's work in the 90's. But thru some of these other artists I listened to, some of his influence came thru their work. So you could say in a weird subconcious sense I was still listening to him.

One more thing..WBAI was the MECCA back in the 90's for the unreleased P stuff. My calendar would be marked for those Prince radio show specials..Man I miss those days.

I had to lol when i saw your list at first but i respect your taste and it´s okay for me.

I dunno if Prince would be my fav artist but i guess he would be under my Top3 at least.

The music he composed between 1992-1996 was really great, especially the Gold Experience

period was one of his best imo with really innovative music, but not to forget Emancipation

and Come, which i like pretty much as well. Besides that he released great songs like Diamonds & Pearls, Money Don´t Matter 2Nite, Cream, TMBGITW, 7, The Greates Romance, The Question Of U, Thieves In The Temple, Still Would Stand All Time, Sexy MF etc.

He was present througout the whole decade with releasing an album almost every year (except 1993 and 1997 i guess), with a lot of themed tours (and not that Greatest hits tours he does nowadays), showing a lot of presence in Tv and radio and with a pack of great music in his pocket.

I really think Prince did very well in the 90s besides the Warner crash...

I lost intererest in Prince's music after the disappointment of Batman and Grafitti Bridge.

Through the 90s I was listening to "indie" guitar music from bands like Suede, Oasis and Blur.

I started listening to Prince again around the time of Musicology and having gone back over all his previous material, including the albums from the 90s, I realised that he continued releasing great music throughout his career. The 80s were probably his creative and commercial pinnacle but, judged on their own merits, the 90s albums are still peppered with genius in my opinion.

However, the bands that I did like during the 90s just don't hold any interest for me anymore. I still have respect for what they meant at the time but I just don't want to listen to them any more.

So at the time, no, Prince wasn't my favourite artist of the 90s ... but I now consider him my favourite artist of all time and that includes his output from the 90s.
