Movie Star - Question..

ok. so in the liner notes to Crystal Ball, it says Movie Star was intended for Morris Day.

But I've seen it on proposed lineups for The Dream Factory... it SOUNDS like a demo. And it seems out of place on the Dream Factory...

was it really intended for DF, or was it only included on bootlegs because it was recorded around the same time??

For some reason I have a hard time thinking that it would have been released as part of DF...

This is true, when Movie Star was recorded, it wasn't 'intended' for any album specifically (like most songs). It would've fitted on an album by The Time perfectly. If The Time hadn't split up already by this point, Prince would've most likely saved the song for their next album.

The tracklists for Dream Factory are all 100% genuine, they come from Paisley Park/WB master tapes. The whole idea behind Dream Factory was to have a bunch of unrelated songs with no unifying sound or themes. Some songs are very demo like and some songs are over produced. It was supposed to sound more like a compilation of different artists, than an album by one person. This was also achieved through the use of vari-speeding Prince's voice up and down, and using Wendy & Lisa more to sing more lead vocals.

For some reason I have a hard time thinking that it would have been released as part of DF...

Prince obviously liked the track, it survived right up until the final version of Dream Factory. The tracks on the Dream Factory boots are correct, but they have been compiled from various sources.

The bootleg version of Movie Star (on The Jewel Box) ends with it segueing into another song, as Prince is saying all that stuff about environmental records, a drum beat starts to fade in. I think it was intended for a specific album.

This is from an earlier configuration of Dream Factory. On it, Movie Star segues into A Place In Heaven.
