^^ These portrayals are why people don't know him as an actual musician; you know, someone who plays guitar and/or instruments and stuff, composes music, and all that stuff.

But imitation in the form of satire can be the biggest form of flattery, too! All if not most of the posts on this thread are from people who are big Prince fans. Even Max Groening (sp?) from the Simpsons tried to get Prince to do a full episode but Prince wanted to control it too much so he decided not to do it. But, he still included Prince in episodes anyway...even the Homer choking Prince show. Funny as hell. But, I'm sure Max is still a big fan of the music anyway. lol

This exacerbates the Prince cliche to the full, he quotes songs from 1979, 1982 and 1984, and wears a type of outfit Prince hasn't worn since the early mid 80s. Its obvious he has little knowledge of Prince outside of the Purple Rain period.

Its what many non fans think, that he's the Purple Rain guy who changed his name some years ago.

Sad!!!!

This cracks me up everytime and its not cliched.

This sketch came out in late 91, it portrays Prince in 1991 look with the campy bandanna and the assless pants from The Arsenio show (Although these ones are jeans rather than frilly yellow things. The screaming is from his 4 owowaah! s in a row at the Arsenio Hall performance (Although the beat ifs from 1986's Kiss). Its much better than the tired Purple Rain look and Jamie Foxx does a look a bit like a blacker and taller Prince.

Prince probably did not like it as it suggested that he was gay (or at least bi) and Jamie's character does mince a bit like a stereotypical effeminate Little Richard thing, and says campy lisp non sequiters like "Yo woman" and "boop" with pursed lips

But that 91 look was gay, what straight man wears a bandanna like that or tight assless pants and does that dancing with the huge dancer mounting him.

This stuff is truly funny.

The Lenny Henry show (1985) shows the lake scene and Prince going past on ever smaller bikes, a motorbike, a pee wee and then a tricycle is very funny.

Scary Movie - The scene with Carmen electra and the stalker and Prince going "AHHHHHHHH!"

The Simpsons (Season 6 - late 94) Homers arassment, a TV screen showing names of people homer has allegedly harassed has "The artist formerly known as Prince"

Hahahahaha..This is hilarious! I can't believe they allowed this to be shown! "Finger Prince"...I mean it sounds so off cutting. The Loony tunes, and Disney related shows always had those subtle jabs of ignorance/remarks...lol. This was pretty clever but I am sure Prince was ANGRY at this one. It's very seemingly, insulting, but it was delivered well. Hahahaha...Finger Prints, NOT finger Prince..LOL

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Maybe they should rename it "Prince cliches perpetuated by the non discerning public". Okay Purple Rain is not as bad as some of the Jackson stuff, but at least that happened or culminated in the 2000s, that video only shows Prince up to 1984.

Like someone else said, if all these things have a stereotype of Prince as effeminate doily dressing purple weirdo of the 80s rather than the multi talented and gifted musician that he is, they are suffering for it. Theres more to Prince than purple coats, make up camp voices and the over sexed persona. That video looks recent rather than 80s and is done on a very low budget.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

The general public doesn't care about things like that or if an act writes songs or not. They never have. It's just entertainment, so they're not "suffering". It's not that serious. Like they used to say on American Bandstand "It has a good beat and I can dance to it". razz If people were interested in musicianship, then classical, blues, or jazz would be big sellers. You can't sell ringtones with that. lol Performers in general are known for a certain image or songs. If you see an Elvis impersonator, the majority of them are doing Vegas era with the jumpsuits, not young Elvis. KISS with makeup is more seen than 1980's non-makeup era. Cameo is known today for red codpieces, when they had many records before Word Up. Invisible Touch Genesis are more known than prog Genesis, Bee Gees for Saturday Night Fever, and so on. Why should Prince be any different?
