PRINCE / WITHDRAWN ORIGINAL ALBUM SERIES BOX SET/EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS

PRINCE / WITHDRAWN ORIGINAL ALBUM SERIES BOX SET/EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS

Back in March Warner Bros. Records were due to bring out a five-disc Original Album Series collection featuring Prince albums. This was to contain 1999, Purple Rain, Parade, Lovesexy and Diamonds and Pearls and should have been released on 26 March to at the same time as the Madonna Original Album Series box set.

Well something happened, and the box set was hastily withdrawn. Rumours suggested that Prince put the kibosh the on best-laid plans of Warner Bros.

Whatever the issue, we don’t want the unreleased status of this box to get in the way of giving you an exclusive look at the set, and so below is a photo gallery for your enjoyment.

It is of course a ‘budget’ release, so all in all pretty unremarkable. Simple card sleeves, unremastered audio, familiar discs used on previous releases. It should have been available for less than £10 but now we will have to wait and see if differences get resolved and this set sees a release later this year.

Am I missing something obvious here by wondering, 'how can SOTT not be included...?'

Probably cause its a double and doesn't fit into their box set format neatly. They would have selected Prince single CD albums as it looks like you are getting more albums and value for your money. Its a marketing thing.

And as for the tracked Lovesexy version inclusion, the more I think about it, that tells me that Prince really had no involvement in this coming out. Someone at Warner just did it as a budget rebundle. From memory it was Prince who insisted on Lovesexy being released on CD as one track 'as originally intended' so the listener was 'encouraged' to listen to the whole album. Like a concept album. Its a trip he wanted you to go on. Now Warner releases it tracked cause he isn't around approving everything!

Milk that catalogue Warner, milk it. But if you really want me to buy the catalogue again, release all albums again on 180 gram vinyl (the rest of them) and all CD albums as 2 cd remastered and a massive fuck off box set with everything. THen you will be cashing big time. Also releases everything on itunes. Pink Floyd and U2 just did that. The Wall Immersion edition. Can you imagine a Lovesexy Immersion Edition?! Fuck me.

^ What a wasted opportunity! No remastering, no bonus tracks, no additional artwork or liner notes. Looks cheap and tacky - no way i would buy this collection as, quite simply, it adds absolutely nothing to what I already have. bored2

SOTT is also a big pull for noobs and casuals on it's own, might as well sell it standalone than in a budget pack.

It's been tracked for going on two decades, nothing to do with Prince not being there.

If you want special editions of the albums, blame Prince, I'm sure Warners would love to milk us all again for them, I know my udders are ready, it's Farmer Prince who's keeping the barn door closed on that one.

The interesting news here is that the release was withdrawn, and rumors are that Prince was the one who pulled the plug. Amazon US lists it as "temporarily out of stock." It's possible that this could be an indiciation that something better is now on the table, but since I'm not privy to relevant negotiations that is pure speculation on my part.

The best and saddest part of this is seeing how desperate the record labels are to survive. They’ll pack four great albums and D&P into one box and sell it for less than they were selling one CD for a few years ago. But they still won’t create a simple web site that sells low-cost, CD quality, DRM free albums.

SOTT is my favorite album, and has sold around 800,000. 550,000 in 1987, and 250,000 from 1988-2011. After year one, that's around 10,000 a year. Since double albums counted as sales of 2 units to the RIAA, SOTT is platinum, but has not been a big seller. Considering how great it is, it hard to believe. A remaster would be great for the die hards, but the casual fans....not so likely. With CD sales in decline, and even download sales in decline, it's not going to happen. I'll be the first person to be happy about saying I'm wrong if it does happen, but Cds have been remastered since around 1994 or so, and I just can't see it.

I tried to buy one as I need the Lovesexy Tracked version. They are charging $19.00 shipping to the USA which is crazy. Can anyone pick one up and ship it to me? I will pay by paypal and will include a little extra. Please PM me if you want to do this

Ugh! at this set. I can see why Prince rails on and on about owning the masters, 'cuz if THIS is what WB wants to do while they own 'em, yuck.

Not for sale in New Zealand, when I went down to JB's they said it had been pulled at the last minute due to distributor wishes.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
