OK then... How would you like a show to sound? Lots of opinions on the org over the past few years, which have yet again come up with W2AUS on the cards.
Many people are, or have been dissatisfied with the live shows, backing singers, the so-called play by numbers funk grooves and covers. Some orgers didn't even like the dance electric rehearsal
My question is this. What would you choose? .. and I don't mean just a list of obscure tracks you want to hear at the next show you go to, as we've done that many times. What about stage setup, band configuration, type of playlist and show structure/concept etc.
My opinion changes, but I'd personally like to see a concept that focuses strongly in one direction, a bit like at Montreux, but without the smooth feeling that Renato brings.
I don't think I'm in a minority when I say I'd like to see 'the trio' back in action on a big stage, with a shit hot rythmn guitarist, allowing P to let rip on lead. I still think Morris can pull it together well on the organ. I'm thinking 'Gold' without the strobe lights and with some stripped out power funk. I like the old tiered stage setup of the 1999 shows, plus some big video screens with some great visuals akin to those in the Depeche Mode, devotional tour. That was awesome.
Show would open with a 10 minute heavy version of Endorphinemachine and finish a tear inducing full version of The Ladder, with Prince on a 'proper' grand piano.
Cheers!

I like it when his live sound is more "organic". Not sure if that's an accurate description if what I'm talking about, but his keys sometimes have this "techy" sound to them. He seems a bit lazy now to...floating in chords for far to long and the tempos r waaay slow. I can feel the temp tummy tho.....dude is 50+ now and I give him slack on that, but switch the chords up some, thriw us some bones, progression us to some crazy spots...we're literate. That said...I'm prolly speaking to soon, fit what I've herd lately were rehearsals and they're meshjng some sounds out. Bit I still am disappointed with the "techy" sound of renatos keys and and that bald broad hollarin' at every one. Cut it all down to 3-4 (+ horns) people and he should be cool...stage been a bit busy lately.

renato needs to be fired and fined for ruining princes sound for way too long
he is akin to elevator music, nothing smooth or jazz about him
as far as stage set up .. prince could use a set of balls on stage .. ya know play something outside his comfort zone of medleys covers and bourbon street bar bands ..
i am ready for tribal prince .. put him in some crazy tribal make up .. instead of looking like the richest gay man on the planet he could look like some crazy freak from outerspace ..
his band should sound like a cross between fishbone, mgmt and funkadelic ..
his back up singers, well wendy and lisa where his perfect backing singers, but he could go for an i threes sound as well .. just no more american idol rejects .. back up singers should be in the background .. not crapping all over the songs with their lead style runs and climaxes
prince should have videos of animal slaughter behind him, underground bases and ancient monuments .. quotes from the bible supporting peace and vegetarianism, cuz jesus was a vegetarian .. and perhaps some war footage so that his audience can snap out of their idiotic stupor of ignorance
prince should play only his good songs .. no more crap from after wb .. and no more jazz .. prince sucks at jazz
and last but not least .. prince should have a rap jar on stage .. everytime he raps he has to refund 1 percent of everyones ticket price for ruining his own show with his b uuuull shit rapping .. that should shut him up quicker

oh and everysong should be the FULL version
and if he wants to play dead on it i wont mind his rapping on that song .. but thats it!!!

Have a tight band with fixed band members, have a cohesive album with a unique sound and play 90% of it live.
Band should consist of:
Michael B Sonny T Morris Hayes Renato Neto and maybe a new rhythm guitarist
The stage should look like the album cover.

Sounds awesome. Fishbone They're a bit like Kid Creole and the Coconuts.
Lovin the tribal vibe, a bit like Adam and the Ants in 1981.

Bloody right. I can really live without Renato though, he's just doesn't bring the funk and I think Sonny and Michael would probably scare the shit out of him. I'd even have the swingy hair Tommy back instead of Renato.

Renato is one of my favourite pianists, but you are right, he makes Prince's sound too smooth often... I just can't imagine him bringing Tommy back at all (although I might even prefer him too) and just wanted at least some slight realism in my fantasy.

this!
it really shouldn't be that difficult to make room for playing most of his new album when you break the show into:
* 40 minutes of the new album * 40 minutes of greatest hits * 40 minutes of post warners material or obscure tracks.
all he'd have to do is just cut all those cover songs from the main shows. if he feels like jamming out on covers, do it at the aftershow.
and i also wouldn't mind the use of backing tapes and loops etc (like he did in 93/94/95) if it enhances the particular 'feel' of a song or makes it come off better in a live setting.
as a show element i've always liked it when he had just one cool dancer, like cat or like mayte.
it'd also be nice to see prince play several different guitars. like the songs that were on albums he recorded with the cloud guitar, use the cloud guitar. on symbol era songs he could use the gold symbol etc etc.
one last thing: just complete songs. the piano or synth segments are nice but all those snippets are just annoying imo. i'd rather hear him do 3 entire songs than just tease a lot with snippets of songs people really want to hear, only to abort them after 15 secs. i know it's meant to be playfull and fun, but it really breaks my heart when he plays 10 seconds of "condition of the heart" only to launch into the 1700th full rendition of songs like "nothing compares 2 u".
oh, and one more thing: move all the people he's promoting to the front of the show and just have them come on as the opening act. people like shelby or andy etc. give them some stage time on their own and sell their albums at the merchandise stand so they will get more exposure for themselves and less hate from all those (including me) who feel they distract too much from the main show.
there. that's not too much to ask for, is it

NO Medleys, No Shortened Songs, and No overbearing Background Singers. NOBODY CHANTING anything. No Put Your Hands Up, No lame ass played out crap. Real Music played by Real Musicians, no stupid pet tricks overbearing the actual music
Stage Setup: Hell, I don't really care. He could do the SOTT stage setup every night. It looked the most awesome to me.
Band: This is the fun choice. I'd include mostly old-school, but I'd want songs with horns to have horns. I'd want rock songs like Let's Go Crazy to not have 3 saxophone players....let the songs sound the way they were written to sound.
Band Members:
Guitar: Miko Weaver, Dez Dickerson, and Wendy Bass: Sonny T Keyboards: Matt Fink, Tommy B, and Lisa Drums: Michael B or John Blackwell....but with Sheila E as a compliment Trumpet: Atlanta Bliss Trombone: Greg Boyer Sax: Eric Leeds
The Setlist: Well, this is not a setlist thread, so I'm breaking a rule. I'd want the set to include enough Greatest Hits to keep the casual fan interested, but enough out of the ordinary to keep the diehards happy too.

You are never ever going to please everybody, just not possible. I would think, that Prince understands this, and does the best he can to give everybody a little something... saw him recently a couple of times in montreal. He played empty room and calhoun sqaure at the same gig, and lots of hits too.. but anyway, I think he knows what's up, his setlists, for the the four times i've seen him definitely show that he does.

Other than the Prince ass-kissers, I don't think there are tons of people glad that Shelby sings lead on 2 or 3 songs in a concert under 2 hours. I also don't think anybody is glad that Prince sometimes barely sings on songs like Mountains that diehards have been dying to hear live, and finally just get to hear it with somebody else singing. A quick piano medley or acoustic part with some snippets is tolerable, but Prince has been playing watered down arrangements. I think this post is great for those of us who miss tours like Musicology or One Nite Alone where the songs that were Full performances had rich arrangements with tight musicianship.
Having Shelby yell Put Your Hands Up 200 times a night with less Prince singing is not doing something for everyone. I'm also tired of people talking about Prince's age. Elton John at 65 does a 3 hour show with 29-32 full length songs each night without his background singers taking center stage.

Hmmm. Listen to the first Gent 2011 show. A bit more like a CONcept. Means: Play it like you mean it, it is the backbone to the show. Add a few more interesting songs (cover or originals). Pull the weaker ones. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

For everyone calling for Renato's blood, just wanted to point out that he hasn't been playing with the NPG since they went over to Europe in June last year.

Not quite what I was getting at, but...I think I have to pay that
FWIW, I like Renato. But I like Cassy too, so it's all good from my perspective.
I'm happy with whatever show we get down here, so I'll duck out of this thread now...

Like most, I don't like Renato or the backup singers - get rid of them; do some obscure songs (hits are fine, as long as there is at least 5-6 new or obscure songs), and full songs only.

forget the setlist or the musicians. frankly, I wish his shows weren't so god damn loud.
