Rate and rank the songs on Rave Un2 the joy fantastic

Just thought it would be funny to rank and rate songs on a lesser album for a change. I actually quite like it, even if its a trend chasing sellout as some may say. But there are some better moments on it.

My list

1. Hot Wit U 9/10, this song just does it for me in so many ways, its funny and creamy and very funky

2. Everyday is a winding road 8.5, yeah its a cover but he does it so powerful, and ear filling sound and great voices and guitar.

3. So Far, So Pleased, 8, yes very poppy and cloying (Sounds like Roxette) but its so cute and sometimes the results are great when he plays it safe, Gwen Stefanis vocals help too.

4. The Greatest Romance ever sold 8, Pure Prince schmaltz that works, an overdone and overproduced love letter in a song, but it works.

5. Rave un2 the joy fantastic 7.5, good opener, but could have been better, still the voices and sound make it pleasing. He makes it accessible, he really was trying so hard to make this album as commercial as possible.

6. Sun Moon and stars 7.5, pretty good falsetto effort here, a cute love ballad and the staccato bedroom rap helps it too

7. Wherever u go, whatever u do, 7.5 , also pleasant and cachy, again people don't like it,as they feel its too cute and false, but I love this

8. Undisputed 7, again this is quite good, an empty filler track, but funky filler at that

9. Baby Knows 7, another cute pop strut a little lightweight but pleasant enough.

10. Tangerine 6.5, a strange little tune, but okay I guess

11. Man o War 6.5, its not good, but its not that bad either, its growing on me

12. Strange but true 6.5, again its okay, but it just does not quite work, still this is far from his worst, the funky breaks again help the song along, kind of a precursor to the Rainbow children in a way.

13. Silly Game 6, the falsetto works less well, but this sweeping ballad is kind of okay I guess, easy on the ears, its just he can zip these songs off in his sleep, its been done to death, still it gets a 6 as I kind of like Silly Game.

14. I love u but don't trust you any more 5, as above but works even less well, I just can not gel with it, but its not like its that bad either, hence a 5 seems about right, because its THERE.

15 Prettyman, 4 I know this tune is quite popular but I have just never got it.

So overall I quite like this album I know many kind like to forget it. Unlike the naysayers I think he tried to make this commercial as possible and its a bit of a Emancipation disc 4. It stands out amongst the predecessor and successor, both albums that are quite fake and lesser works (Although the funk lite promiscuity of NPS is miles away from the preachy electronic TRC). I give rave a solid 75 out of 100 a B/B+

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Everything is a dirty dog's bum except for I Love U But.... On a good day, I would be gracious enough to allow Strange But True to be the steam off the dog's turd, so that it may escape the decaying feaces that is this album, but that's it.

You know I am not a newbie, I like this album, if I fly in the face of popular opinion to bad, I am an individual not a sheep. Unless you consider 20 and a half years a newbies time (Next to all you guys who got into Prince with 1999 and earlier albums, I guess I am).

By the way I give Mountains a 12/10 I just love that song, cool video too. Its possible to like Rave and all his classic 1980 -88 stuff too, but Mountains is one of his highlights, its in my top 10.

But you didn't, you just hated on it. Rate and Rank means give it a mark or a placing (Preferably for each track), you just called it a whole lot of shit based names. So there. You could have easily said "I give it a 1 as it really sucks" at least.

Rave is one of Prince’s most underrated albums. I think this is because the good songs are the sweeter downtempo stop while the awful ones are memorably bombastic.

The Good Songs

Tangerine

One of my favorite Prince songs, Tangerine is short, sweet, and drips with lyricism. “Take your picture / everywhere I go / use it for a coaster / and drink the overflow”

Strange But True

Verse after forceful verse in this song land like a series of punches. Smart and personal.

Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do

Delicate and melodic with some strong guitar and bass bits.

Eye Love U But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore

More of the great personal feeling that comes through on this album. We all know who this is about, and Prince isn’t holding back.

The OK Songs

Man O' War

I love this because it is a great slow R&B song that isn’t a slow jam.

Silly Game

The outpouring of Mayte/Manny stuff continues here.

So Far, So Pleased

This would be a lot better if Gwen Stefani had a bigger place in the mixed, but she is hardly inaudible as some people claim.

Baby Knows

She got the butt that go round! A nice upbeat track.

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic

Strong falsetto and some cool guitar work, but ultimately it feels light in a vapid way.

Everyday Is A Winding Road

Prince’s cover of this song feels stiff and overproduced.

The Bad Songs

Hot Wit U

This song is great right up until Eve jumps in. But she only sullies it without ruining it.

The Sun, Moon & Stars

Smells like a filler track. The weak drum programming is irritating in an bad jazz way.

The Greatest Romance Ever Sold

The layered chorus and synths on this track are overdone and annoying. And the drum machine sounds like a toy.

Prettyman

I know this is a joke song, but it’s a little too goofy.

Undisputed

I never understood why people liked Public Enemy so much. This awful track is a lesson in why Prince and Chuck D. should be kept far away from hip-hop.

I would think as an adult it would be possible to give an opinion about the album without going to the gutter. It is just immature and low-class.

1. Mature normal people who actually join in constructively

2. Immature time wasters and shit stirrers like you.

I think this is a great CD. I never really understood why it is not loved by alot of orgers. The only songs that I didn't dig and couldn't really listen to were "Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic", "Baby Knows" &"Every Day is a Winding Road". Otherwise I listen to the whole CD and enjoy it thoroughly.

My Favorites in no particular order are:

1) Hot Wit U

2) Man o War

3) I love u but I don't trust U

4) Wherever U go

5) Sun Moon & Stars

Very innovative CD. Prince appeared on Guitar Magazine, Keyboard Magazine, & Musician Magazine to promote this album. What other artist has the chops to be on the cover of multiple musician magazines all at the same time? Answer-No One!

Peace!

1) Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (Just a really catchy song!)

2) Man O' War (reminds me a lot of an Emancipation-era ballad. I LOVE those ballads on Disc 2)

3) Undisputed (yes, I could do without the Chuck D. rap, but it has a nice beat)

4) Strange But True (I love the vibe and energy of the song. Does it remind anyone else of "All the Critics"?)

5) The Sun, The Moon, The Stars (nothing real fancy, but nice and mellow to listen to when I am in the mood)

6) The Greatest Romance Ever Sold (same as #5)

7) Everyday is a Winding Road (Why does everybody HATE this song? It's pretty sweet imo. It sounds like he blended 70s funk and disco with 90s house club/electronica music. Works for me.)

8) Hot Wit U (Catchy chorus. Nothing special, but a fun song)

9) Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do (This song could have had a lot of potential. It had some nice guitar work in it, but it is short, but it's pretty good, even though it sounds like a boy band song of the time tbh.)

10) Eye Love U But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore (I love the acoustic music just like in "Sometimes it Snows in April. I feel the emotion in the song, but he almost shrieks his vocals throughout the song, and I cannot get into it)

11) Silly Game (Decent ballad, that's about it)

12) Baby Knows (Decent blues-rock song, that's about it)

13) Tangerine (Nice acoustic tune, but would have worked better as an instrumental imo)

14) So Far So Pleased (Does nothing for me, I don't care for the song really)

Shucks. Forgot Prettyman. That would probably rank in the #6 to #10 range I reckon. It's pretty good, real funky.
